Exploring Singapore's Holland Village at night
A few nights back, I was able to visit Holland Village which is situated within the center of Singapore. It's a quaint neighborhood that is part of District 10. It is most known for its lively nightlife and good places to eat. It may not be one of the busiest places in the city but it sure is one of the most interesting. And I was able to have a glimpse of it when I visited this spot last Friday night.
As soon as I stepped out of the MRT station, I already felt the vibe of Holland Village which is not typical in any other places of Singapore. Although there are aspects of it that are similar to the other districts, there are specific features of it that are unique in this place. I would have to agree with other people's claim that Holland Village is where the East meets the West. I've seen many expats that are from the West that are walking down the street, drinking at the bars, strolling around with their kick scooters, and many other activities as well.
At first, I thought that Holland Village was just a name that they gave to this place without any basis at all. However, when I saw the miniature windmill in front of the Holland Village Market and Food Centre I realized that this was named because of the community that gathered here in this place.
What made this place unique from other places in Singapore is the gently sloping terrain in the prominent part of the place. In other districts, the majority of the places are mostly flat terrain or leveled. Over here, there is some sort of a dramatic or cinematic feel as I walk along the winding roads. The development of the buildings in this area is also low-rise so you don't feel small compared to the part of the city where the buildings are towering above you.
On a night like this, it has become customary that they will close certain sections of the road to make the surrounding area a convenient and safe place for people to walk. The way I see it, this place becomes a park where people can explore the neighborhood without crossing into any vehicle path. I felt relaxed as I walked and took photos of the neighborhood because I didn't have to worry about crossing the road or bumping into somebody else because there was enough space for everyone to walk on. I like this type of pedestrian-oriented place where you can freely explore the surroundings.
After spending almost an hour exploring the area, I finally decided to go back home and bring with me the memories that I have of this place. It may be a simple walk but the things that I saw and the emotions that I felt during the walk are worth keeping with me as I head back home. I will surely come back to this place to experience the unique activities that can be done and the good food that are being offered in restaurants of this place. See you soon Holland Village!
