My Neighbors And I

avatar

I have had my share of experiencing both sides of having neighbors—the good and not-so-good experiences.

When we first moved into this state over three years ago, the first house we rented was nothing to write home about. Our landlady, who doubled as our neighbor, was not the kind of person anyone would want to live close to. The other two tenants in her house were amazing, but do you believe she would sometimes try to create an enemy between us?

Imagine our first night in the house. I had fetched just two buckets of water from the outside tap to wash our house. She opened her kitchen window and complained that we were wasting too much water.

I was shocked and speechless beyond doubt—just two buckets she was already complaining about. The following morning, my husband told her to increase the money she was charging us for the electricity bill if she thought that the pumping machine was consuming a lot of electricity. I thought that would solve the problem and stop her from complaining. She refused, but she will always complain that we are using water and the pumping machine is taking a lot of the electricity units.

Aside from the water part, she complained about almost everything we do in that house. From trying to restrict friends and family from visiting us and trying to create a problem between my husband and me.

Imagine walking about in your street, and once you tell someone you live in a particular house, people will start looking at you with pity eyes. Yes, it was that bad.

That first night, my husband and I concluded that we would not exceed one year in her house. For that one year, it was from one trouble to another, but in all, I told my husband that the best thing we could do was to ignore her and not buy into her trouble. It is not worth it.

So, when our house rent expired and we started looking for another house to move into, I prayed that God should direct us into a house with good neighbors.

And God answered my prayer. My next-door neighbor is the most amazing human being anyone can wish for living next to her house.

In fact, I could no longer refer to her and her family as our neighbors because we started seeing ourselves as one big family.

We relate so well and always support each other whenever the need arises.

With them we shared our, drinks, meals, laughter, and hard times.

When I think of them, I feel so blessed and lucky to have crossed paths with such an amazing family.

Only that they had to move into a bigger house some weeks ago, and now I'm learning how to live in this house without having them around.

I have two other neighbors who are easygoing and nice as well, but our relationship isn't that close.

And yes, we have a new neighbor next door; she seems to be a very quiet one. We haven't had the chance to know each other that much. She looks like a very peaceful type of person, and that is okay with me.

There is nothing like living among people who are peace-loving. Life is hard enough, and having to worry about some troublesome neighbors isn't something that is desirable by anyone.

And it is beautiful when one lives with neighbors who are kind and lovely. And above all, they are open to friendships with you.

The first life I lived as an adult was like this too. The caretaker was a criminal, the house inccured all sorts of damaged and they refused to repair the house. The state you moved to, was it Lagos?

Hmm, some house agent will hardly make heaven o, they will know a bad conditions of a house and still encourage someone to pay for it, just for their percentage.

No, not Lagos, we moved to Kaduna state.

This is why I don't like living with landlords and landladies. The bad ones can frustrate one's life as if you didn't pay your money. One prayer is to meet good neighbours wherever one wants to live in because it is important. I hope with this new neighbour, you guys would still make friends, I think it's a matter of time. She is just trying to be cool and observe the environment first. She might turn out to be a sweet person.

Same here o, but hubby was like the agent said the landlady doesn't not have problem, worst mistake he ever made🤣

She is just trying to be cool and observe the environment first. She might turn out to be a sweet person.

That is what I thought, she might just being cautious.

Praying to have a good neighbors is very important, may God always guide our ways.

Hehehe. Some people are actually cool from afar until you move closer to them to see how mean they can be 😃😃

One should always pray to have good neighbors. Lucky you had a good one in your new houses. Some people do not like living in the same compound with the house owners to avoid certain problems.

I think that is just the best thing to do, some house owners can be very troublesome.

Oh no, sorry to hear that.
I was really counting days then, please just avoid her as much as you can, she does not worth your trouble. And I hope that you won't have to stay long in that house, some place better will show up.

The landlady's case, you guys weren't informed when searching for house.
That's so bad.
For me, I hate to live in a compound full of troubles...the reason I somehow adopt a private life.

During my Nysc, the landlady was acting like that but I was private enough to snub her and the thing used to provoke her eeeh

We were new in the state and had no idea the kind of person she was, we only based our assignment on what the house agent told us.

People like that, the best thing is to snob them, they are not worth it.

Yeah, snubbing them is the best approach which is somehow add to do too especially if the landlady is assistant satan.😂

Aw, I hope that you can keep in touch with the neighbours who have become like family to you :-( Did they move far away or still close enough to visit and maintain a friendship?
