A sunny but windy ride on a Saturday morning
It has been a few weeks ago that I made a ride with my cycling buddies. We always try to plan a nice route to cycle on a Saturday morning, but something always came up in recent weeks why I couldn't join.
But yesterday we were all available and the weather was quite nice as well. No rain and quite sunny. There was a lot of wind, but we always plan our routes that we have to cycle against the wind first and have a tailwind on the way back.
We decided to make a round in the polder. We have a lot of polders in our area. A polder is land that used to be water, but has been pumped dry. A lot of the 'reclaimed' land is used as farmland. There are many fields and you see a lot of livestock; mostly cows and sheep.
This low-lying land is enclosed by dikes with canals that that carry away the excess water.
The following shot is taken when we were cycling over one of the dikes. As you can see the water in the canal is higher than the land in the background.
Since most of the land is used as farmland you there aren't a lot of trees and buildings. This gives you a nice clear view of the area which makes it a really nice place to go cycling. Some of the trails exist of very narrow roads like the one below. They are all tarmac and there weren't a lot of other people at that time, so that was nice. The only big disadvantage was that you are completely exposed to the wind. There is no hiding there when you're cycling on front of the group. That is why we change positions every few kilometers. It really saves energy when cycling right behind someone.
We also cycled past a huge indoor skiing hall. I've vitised this hall a few times in the past. We don't have any mountains in The Netherlands, so these halls (we have another one) are the only option when you want to go skiing here. It is quite expensive and even though it is a large hall, you can ski from the top to the bottom is less than a minute.
The overall amount of kilometers was just over 50 and it took us almost two hours. It's still early in the season, so the average speed and amount of kilomaters will be increased over the upcoming weeks.
The amount of elevation (97 meters) shows how flat our little country is 😀

The area has been like this for many years already. The first polders were created in the 14th century. The area was a body of water before.
This video shows how it's done.
20% of added land! That's a lot. Then using planes to seed the fields. Quite a costly feat I imagine.

Wow the landscape is very pretty can I ask where did you went with your bicycle 🚲.
It's the western part of The Netherlands near a city called Zoetermeer.
These shots are so well taken, it's fascinating to know that the area was once filled with water.
50km in two hours, that's impressive but I bet the fun and experience was worth it. Well done to you and your buddies.
