The place to be, for the night to come

Oh my God, how much blue do you spend, to keep us from seeing You!
Odysseas Elytis

This quote, written by a Greek poet and roughly translated by me, is the first thing that came to my mind, looking at that scenery. I guess landscapes like that, inspired the poet in the first place. Landscapes very common in the Greek islands and especially the Aegean sea.

I was standing on the top of a hill, looking the sky and the sea like an endless blue blanket, covering our existence itself. The island of Tinos is not the most famous or popular of the Greek islands but this is by no means due to its lack of beauty.

On the contrary, it is one of the most beautiful I have ever seen and I have seen a lot :)

Of course most people that visit an island in the summer don't have in mind a mountain view, neither a dead poet. The place that they mostly want to spend their time is the beach. And Tinos won't disappoint them in that matter either!

Kolymbithra beach is actually two beaches that share the same name. The small one, with sun-beds, beach bar and shops, perfect for swimming and the large one, less organised and exposed to the north wind (very common in the summer) which make it less friendly to the swimmers but ideal for the surfers!

The two parts of the beach are separated by a bunch of cliffs which apparently are a hot spot for diving. When I visited it there were no surfers at all but the sign on the top of the staircase, leading to the beach, speaks for itself!

But there are so many more to see and enjoy. Like Rochari beach, near the fishing village Panormos and the only natural port of the island, or like Pahia Ammos beach, with the amazing sand-dunes and the wonderful boulders. Or the very old village Platia, crept up a steep hillside.

And after a long day strolling around the island, the town of Tinos, the port and the only place that can be hardly described as town, is the place to be, for the night to come!

I took those pictures on 10-11/07/2012, when I was working as a photographer for a travel magazine. A job that allowed me to travel all over Greece and see all the places I ever wanted to see and some more that I never imagined I would be interested in (but I enjoyed them anyway).

All the pictures and the words are mine.

Thank you for reading and if you want to know more about me you can check out my introduction post.

I am in awe of the horizon's magnificence, where the sky and sea blur as one. Your job at the travel magazine must have been incredible.

I am glad you enjoyed it!

It was a very interesting job for sure! It wasn't all roses but then again which job is?

Mountainous regions are truly something special. I hadn't really had much exposure to them until recently. That ability to just stand on one that overlooks a series of smaller hills and landscapes really puts things into perspective. Even more fun if you have a drone with you :^)
