Five Sundays
Sunday visits to archeological sites is kind of a personal tradition, especially the first Sunday of each month from November till March.
Why is that, you might ask.
Living in Greece usually means that there is an archeological site near you, wherever you are. They are scattered all over the country and millions of tourists visit them each year. But for the residents, visiting those jewels of our country is something that we'll do some day, that never comes.
During the five Sundays that I mentioned before (plus a couple more days), there is an extra motivation.
Free entrance :)
It's not that the entrance fee is so expensive that we can't go the other days but having a fixed date usually helps to cast the die. At least it helps me :)
So here I am, on the first Sunday of 2024, visiting the Venetian castle of Palamidi, at the town of Nafplio. It is the same castle that I see every day overlooking my home and I often photograph from afar, during my walks.
The problem with prearranged dates is that you can't predict the weather. And today was a bit cloudy and drizzling! Not that it stopped me from visiting the castle but I spent more time than usual indoors, in a bastion with many buildings and open rooms! I have already been in this castle a few times so I wasn't anxious to see everything at once!
I like the cloudy weather for photography. That is if it isn't totally overcast and I don't slip on a wet rock :)
And today was one of the good days, with the light coming and going, giving me interesting patterns to shoot. I even got a bit of blue sky at some point and a few rays of sun!
And I didn't slip at all :)
It was a nice change to see the town that I live from above and at the same time taking a deeper dive into the history of the place. I say deeper because in Nafplio history is loudly present in every step you make but of course inside the castle the same feeling is much stronger!
This is my response to Weekend-Engagement topics: WEEK 187 by @galenkp for the topic:
What weekend activities are you getting involved with this weekend and why?

My weekend was spent in some emergencies at home but generally it has mostly been a couch potato weekend after weekend since pandemic.
While I love all the photos you have posted I particularly love both of the pics with the old juxtaposition with the new. I really appreciate how you got the lines and curves to align !!! I was wowed by the castle wall in comparision to the angle of the towns streets and the football pitch on the side. And then you double wowed me with the way he lines of the grassy patch in the old castle aligned with the semi modern lines of the town. Fantastic!
The only photo I took this weekend was for a whatsapp update - just my morning coffee :)
Thank you very much for your kind words @brijwhiz, I am really glad you enjoyed the post!
Have a nice week ahead :)
Very beautiful place
Thank you for stopping by, @cryptomother :)

What you say at the beginning reminds me that when I was a child and lived a few years in Athens, my parents never took me to the Parthenon, I'm sure they thought: "we'll go there any day" 😂... then we left Greece and I was able to visit it a few years later when I went back there alone, on vacation.
Very beautiful castle! I hope to get to know Nafplio sometime 😊
Yes, that's exactly how it goes. I was living myself practically next to Acropolis for years, I was looking at Parthenon every day during the dog walk and yet I never went to see it. Until I moved away and the first thing to do when I came back for holidays was to visit Acropolis :)
It was that year that I decided to make it a personal tradition to visit at least a few archeological sites or museums during the winter!
Nafplio is very nice indeed. And now you have one more place to go when you visit Greece again!
Cheers!
No doubt it is better to go to those places in low season, there are so many antiques that it takes two lifetimes to see everything hahaha, I hope to visit Greece again soon, cheers!
