In January 2019, the city of Rio de Janeiro hosted the first Street League Skateboarding final.

The place chosen for the assembly of the track for the SLS final was the Olympic Park, more precisely, Arena Carioca 1.

The Olympic Park was built to house several competitions for the Rio 2016 Olympics. Today, it is used for major sporting events.

The Park

I was invited by Effect Sport, através do meu amigo Diogo Vaz, along with other photographer friends, to be in the arena and photograph the event.

We made our way to the entrance to the gym, where our identities were confirmed and we received our credentials for the photographer's paddock. The padock was kind of disappointing. It was a small space, maybe 3mx3m, on the side of the track where about five photographers took turns to photograph the skaters.

I took some pictures of the women's warm-up and there I felt that I would have difficulties, as I didn't have a tele lens to take the photos further away.

Luckily I found my friend Fred Vegele, by the way, is one of the most creative photographers I've ever met, and he lent me his Canon 5D, with a 70-200mm f2.8 tele lens... And that's when the fun began!

I positioned myself on the second floor, from the gymnasium bleachers, and from there I made my post for the photographs.

The grand finale begins... What an absurd pleasure it is to see Mark Suciu ride live... How elegant!

One of the most annoying facts of the event was the fall of Ivan Monteiro, trying a 360 kickflip to lipslipe, on the high beam. Unfortunately, he missed and fell off the obstacle, hitting his mouth on the ground. Despite the injury and everyone's concern, he came out well and waving to the crowd.

Another curious fact was that of Leticia Bufoni, after hitting her last trick, running out to celebrate with the crowd as if she was winning. Since she forgot that Aori Nishimura still had one try... Aori hits her trick, gets a better grade than Leticia and becomes champion of the SLS Women's final, in Rio.
Many tears of disappointment and indignation rolled from Leticia's eyes. As a popular Brazilian saying goes: "he who laughs last, laughs best!"

In the men's competition, victory went to Nyjah Houston, who had not won an SLS final since the previous year, due to an injury.

This year we will have another final here in Rio... I hope to be invited to photograph again!
