We Just Had Home-Cooked Porridge for the First Time in Our 4-Year Marriage
The agency monitoring the tropical cyclone lifted the signal warning in our area. Although the weather is not yet fine, we are far from danger.
On the first day of class suspension, last Tuesday, while we were traveling to Bogo City to withdraw, my husband and I had a conversation. He told me that his co-worker joked about having porridge as a meal since the salary was not yet deposited in their bank account.
I told him that we could also have porridge in our meal since it is good to eat porridge in cold weather. The problem was I’m not confident about cooking porridge. From the first year of our marriage until now when we have been married for four years, I never tried cooking the said meal.
Back when I was in my parents' house, my mother was the one who cooked porridge for us. Usually, my mother used corn grits, not rice for porridge. When I observed her cooking, I was afraid of the sputter of the corn grits since it was truly hot and can lead to burning in your skin. Despite loving to eat porridge, I had no intention to cook here in our house.
Yet, my husband was so confident that cooking porridge was so easy. So, I told him that he would be responsible for cooking the porridge if he wanted to.
So, when we arrived from our travel to Bogo City, he immediately went to the kitchen to cook the porridge. I was expecting that he would use the corn grits for porridge, only to find out that he would use rice, and in addition, would use the rice cooker. I laughed. The reason why he was confident was because he did not need to monitor the fire for the porridge since the rice cooker was automatic.
In the end, he successfully cooked the porridge and for the first time in our marriage, we had home-cooked porridge.
The funny thing about it was we had different preferences in terms of the flavor of the porridge. He wanted sweet and I wanted salty, He put cocoa in his porridge, I just put table salt on my porridge. So, we had the home-cooked porridge with different flavors. We respect our choices in terms of food.
For us, this is marriage.
