You might think I’m going to talk about homemade comfort food from the title, but that’s not the case. Let me explain. Recently, we’ve been through some tough times, including the loss of someone in our family. It’s been something we’ve had to cope with—keeping ourselves busy, but also allowing the sadness to show up in moments. A few days ago, we decided to go out as a family to laugh, talk, and enjoy some good food. We thought a change of scenery might help.

We went for pizza and ordered two flavors: Napolitana, which has dough, calabrese sausage, onions, bell peppers, and spices, and we also got Pantaneira, made of dough, shredded beef, fried plantains, and cheese (my favorite). The food was great, the service was good, and the place was almost empty, so we could talk without having to shout.

It’s true that we’ve all faced or will face tough times, but how do we handle it without coming out too hurt? What has worked for us is being, and having, a support system—crying together if needed, talking, and being empathetic, even if the other person brings up the same issue five times. Being a good listener helps you figure out how to really support each other.

This meal was different because, due to stress and other worries, it had been months since we went out to enjoy ourselves. It didn’t cure the pain, but it did ease it. In the end, we even shared some good laughs.

I wish you clarity during your hard times and the support of loved ones who help heal your heart, just like we are doing here.
