What is the Biblical Way to Overcome Depression and Anxiety?: MCGI Topic Review

In this world, with so many problems and so many challenges, a lot of people suffer from anxiety and depression. But, as Brother Eli Soriano taught us in this video Bible lesson, a real Christian and God’s true servant does not have to go through these afflictions. Through faith we overcome all depression and anxiety in life.

Consider the story of Lazarus, the poor beggar story narrated by Jesus Christ. Lazarus faced great difficulties in his short life - he had no possessions, no home, and was covered in sores. Still, there was nowhere it was written that Lazarus complained about his condition. Despite his struggles, Lazarus held on to his faith in God. This faith guided him through his earthly trials and finally led him to eternal peace and rest in Abraham's bosom.

The story of Lazarus taught us a lesson: our present circumstances do not determine what we will become in the end of our lives. We will all die sooner or later regardless of the economic or educational status we hold at any given moment. This is what Paul means in the letter to the Hebrews when he writes, ‘And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment’ Hebrews 9:27. This information must not make us fear, but rather inspire the need to lead a purposeful and faithful life.

We will go on to suggest that the solution to anxiety and depression has to do with how we see things. When we put too much investment in our physical life; we cannot escape depression and defeat. However, focus on the promise of an eternal life and even amidst challenges, you will find peace. For us Christians, there is a world that is yet to be, which is eternal life after the temporal life on earth.

Brother Eli reminded us In Philippians 4:6-7, “In every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God, and the peace of God which passeth all understanding shall keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” A very comforting passage that encourages us to offer up to God all our worries and concerns knowing very well that we will be at peace beyond human understanding.

Life belongs to God, and this must be at the forefront of our mind. As Jesus taught, not even a sparrow falls to the floor without the Father's will. How much more valuable are we as people in God's eyes? Our souls are of immeasurable value to Him. This understanding needs to comfort us because we know that nothing outside of God's will and purpose can be revealed to us.

Death, which is usually a first-rate source of anxiety to most, should not be feared by those who believe in Christ. Instead, we are able to see it as a transition—the completion of our earthly journey and the beginning of our eternal life with our Creator. To die in Christ is to live forever, according to the Bible.

Let us therefore no longer be preoccupied with the death or trials of this life. Instead, let us realize that we live by faith and prepare for the return of our eternal existence. By shifting our focus from short earthly affairs to eternal spiritual affairs, we find the energy to triumph over anxiety and depression. Let us agree with God's love, His perfect will, and His promise of an eternal life. When we do, we will experience the peace that passes all understanding and keep our hearts and minds stable in Christ Jesus.
