Monday Memoir: My First Car
This blog post is an initiative of the silver bloggers community on Hive, a writing challenge that comes up every week. This is my first time taking part in the challenge. When I saw the topic of this week Monday memoir, it brought back pleasant memories of old.
I am a type of person who live a very moderate lifestyle and has no desire for high things even when I can afford them. In my family, we run a family retail business that has been very successful and providing for our needs over the years adequately. Though having a family of five and I commute to my place of business everyday, I do not see the need of buying a car very appealing, it was like an unnecessary extravagant to me, such money could be reinvested into business for more profits-the way a business man thinks. I was using an old bike to business and on weekend, I rarely go anywhere. That was my life.
Everything changed when I started blogging full time about 7 years ago. Though leaving our business in the care of my wife to face blogging full time was a hard decision, it turned out to be the best decision I would ever take in my life. When I started blogging full time, I was no longer going to our business place, and so, i didn't see any reason to keep my old motorcycle. I sold it out because I couldn't ride in such an old bike in town for people to see me.
Selling the bike didn't go well with my wife, she kept asking why I have to sell it when I am not lacking money. My reply to her was, "Something better is coming". That was only a word of faith, but it turned out that the gods heard my confession. That same month, I had my first breakthrough in blogging, with a payout of over $500. That's a huge amount of money when converted to my local currency. The following month, I got another big payout, this time the amount was over $1200. I didn't know what to do with all the money as I was not living on the income from blogging.
This was when I knew it was time to get a car. My choice of car from childhood days has been something moderate, I don't like anything gigantic. Also, I thought that the size of a car determine the cost of maintenance. So, I went for childhood dream car-Volkwagen Golf. That was my very first car.
Before buying the car I knew nothing about driving. I never took a driving class, I wanted to learn with my own car, but that wasn't a funny experience to talk about. Within the first 5 days of getting the car I have rammed it twice against our compound fence, and hit another car once. It wasn't funny learning all by myself. Nonetheless, I was determine to do it, and I did after nearly a two weeks of missing road. The car served us for two years and I got to sell it to buy a better one.
Looking back at this experience now, I can't help but smile at how life's journey unfolds in unexpected ways. From being content with my old motorcycle to suddenly finding success in blogging that led to my first car, it's amazing how things work out. That Volkswagen Golf, despite our rough start together, became more than just a vehicle – it was a symbol of change, growth, and the rewards of taking chances in life. Sometimes the best things come when we least expect them, even if we have to bump into a few fences along the way.
