The Conversation: Stumbling Path
How long has it been? I sat down, staring at my screen, thinking of how long it has been since I had to change the career path, I had always wanted to follow to something else. "Yes, its more than 22 years now," I said in my mind. I picked up my laptop and started typing.
It is a common thing for teachers and parents to ask their kids, "What do you want to be in the future?" Sometimes I think to myself, Is that question really necessary for kids? What do they know? Can't they help the kids become what they want to be in the future? When I was asked this question, the only thought on my mind as a kid was to become an astronaut. This was the path I was ready to take. I was ready to do everything to achieve this dream of mine, but little did I know that there are so many things that would hold me back.
"You want to become an astronaut? That's great. You can become anything you want to become in life," was what my teacher told me, and this made me more determined. I started reading books about atronology, taking science classes, and watching documentaries, but no one ever told me that wouldn't be enough for me to walk the path of success.
The first roadblock I experienced was that of the university. Because nothing of such was done in my country, no university offered the course, and I discovered this at a late date. I was already in senior high school 1 (SS1). It was a shocking discovery for me.

"You mean I can't study astronomy at the university?" I asked my dad that evening as we sat on our balcony watching the sunset. "Yes Demola. There is something that has been predestined for us because of the country in which we were born," he said. I watched him talk with sadness in his eyes, and this made me sad too. I wanted to be an astronaut so I could take a picture of the earth and show it to my parents so they could be proud of me, but I guess I have to find an alternative path.
"Was there something you wanted to be when you were younger?" I asked my dad, and the responses he gave me changed the way I think. He said, "Yes, I wanted to be a public speaker, more like a politician, but I don't want to go fully into politics because of the gimmick in it." I was hearing him talk about how he wanted to change the country he lived in so people who wanted to pursue a particular dream could achieve the dreams, and this ignited a new resolution in me.
If he can't make that happen, then I will do that for him. I changed my thinking perspective as I set on a new path to change the world I live in.

Yes, I also think teachers should deviate from asking kids what they want to become in the future because they are still very young and do not know much. It is when they start growing that their perspectives start to change. I think observing them and how to guide them in the right choice will do!
Most children want to go through the good path their parents couldn't and for makes them proud of their children. I wish you the best.
Very true
It’s said that many school don’t even have student counselors that will help the kids understand their strengths and weaknesses which will help them pick a fitting career.
Once a 3 year old child says I want to become a doctor, they start force that kid down that path which is wrong.
😑
I just hope teachers in private and public schools can do better
Yes, most schools need counsellors that will always guide these kids in the right path.
I wish you the best on your new path. It didn't work out for your dad, I pray it does for you.
It’s working already.

I hope for a better country and I’ll do my part to make it work
I think kids are asked that question but their answers are never really heard. A kid can tell a teacher she wants to study space science in Nigeria and the teacher won't say anything when he knows very well she can't chase it.
I feel kids should be told the condition at that time.
Yeah
This will help them align their thoughts
If they still want to pursue such goal or change their mind.
This is very important

Thank you 🫶🏽
Hmm what a great path you have chosen, indeed you are a chosen😋😋😋
😅😅😅
Yes yes
I’m a chosen
Lol
There are many dreams that seem impossible, especially when you live in countries where what you so desperately want to do cannot be achieved, But when fate closes a door, it leaves a window open, and that is what happened to you. Good luck on your new path.
Thanks for sharing your experience.
Good day.

I really don't like such questions, the feature is still far, moreover what does a child knows about the feature. I don't permit any teacher to ask my kids such questions. Because they don't know?
Sometimes such questions become necessary and sometimes we have to make tough choices on a sensitive path. I'm sure I'll allow my kids to ask whatever the question they want and I'm sure I'll also ask them questions. Great write up my friend. Keep writing 💯
Very true, it’s better to ask kids this kind of question so we can direct them but most people ask and use the answers as a criteria to choose a future for the kid without understanding their strengths and weaknesses.
I do appreciate your comment !BBH

Conversations like this makes the father and son bond stronger. I wish you well.
Also, i love your story, short but straight to the point.
I believe that if your old path is not working like you said just sit down and think about a new path that will lead to success.

We all have the ability to create a new path that will lead to success with the help of people around us
We owe it to our country to keep the fire for a better life burning from generation to generation. It could be frustrating but then Rome wasn't built in a day. Plus it's home, no one will make it better than us who live in it.
