Agriculture as a key factor to Economic growth
Agriculture is the major key factor in economic development of any country. The basic need of the people is food, that is why agriculture must pay absolute attention to in the development of any country.
A country where there is famine, in such a country, there will be higher rate of crime because this is nature that we can't do without.
Agriculture contributed about 37.4% of Nigeria's gross domestic product estimated at $50.2billlion in 2003.It also accounts for 90% of the agricultural output coming from the small scale holder sector
According to National Bureau of Statistics 2005), Agriculture provides occupation for 70% of the economically active population of which 38% are female.
Generally, Agriculture contributed to about 40% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country. This contribution increased by 3.8% yearly and the percentage of export value in agriculture grew from 10% to 20%.
ROLES OF WOMEN IN AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT
Women have been making prominent and important contribution to Agriculture right from the onset, and they actually constitute the bulk of the world's food producers.
A united nations estimate puts women's domestic food production at 80% in Africa, 60% in Asia and the Pacific and latin America in 40%.
In the pre-colonial days, women in Africa cultivated food crops while men hunted and fought wars. Women engaged in various farming activities such as planting, weeding, threshing & winnowing.
Women play a significant role in Agriculture worldwide.about 70% of agricultural workers are women
They process the product into finished good for consumption, they market it and sell it as well, some of the food they process is cassava.
CASSAVA
It is a plant which has large starchy, thick end and tuberous root. It is a valuable source of cheap calories
Nigeria is the world's largest producers of cassava with about 45.75 metric tones annually(FAO, 2007). Cassava is a cheap and reliable source of food for more than 700 million people in the developing world(FAO,2003).
Cassava is the most important food staple in After as it can be processed in to many varieties of food, The requirements of consistent supply of large volume of fresh roots by cassava- based industry cannot be supported by the current subsistence production systems.
LABOUR PRODUCTION
labour production or output per worker derives it's importance from the relationship to economic and we'll being of a nation. For economic growth to result in an increase standard of living, it is necessary for output to grow faster than the labour for in the population, which implies that labour productivity increase the output of crop are deemed necessary
Therefore it is necessary to determine labour productivity by providing a basis for a better allocation of resources and enable them to make more efficient and effective use of labour.
