The king Giant Fennel

Giant fennel Ferula communis cabo da roca 1.jpg

I saw a big yellow ball sticking out above all the other little flowers and I had no idea what I was looking at. Of course I had to get closer to look at it, but that did not help at all. Still had no idea what I was looking at.
If I managed to ID it correctly, it is a type of Fennel. A giant one!

Ferula communis

Comparing it to the images I found online it does look a little bit different. The cluster of yellow flower is much more compact on this one. But that could be cause by the harsh growing conditions. High on the cliff with nearly constant winds and sun.

Let's say I am right though :)
It is quite common in the Mediterranean region and it can reach human height. I have seen the leaves growing along field roads further inland, where they are more protected from the winds and they are really tall. I didn't see the flowers, but they do grow even higher above the leaves. You can google some images if you are curious.

The one here is not that tall and it's still much taller than anything else.

Blooming time starts in late winter and lasts till July with a peak in April. The leaves will stay green a little longer, but by the fall they will also die back.

Here is a very cool old graphic from 1907 of the plant.

Fun fact:
In the past people were using it to make whips to discipline kids in schools. How lovely :)

Thanks for the knowledge. I have never grown Fennel personally but it's on my to-do list.

Have fun with it :) They give plenty of seeds after and usually start to sprout all over the place.

Excellent post, very illustrative friend @ewkaw .... Fennels in my country are much smaller!.... Now, what really surprised me is that have been used to make whips and reprimand children!.... What a plant with a dark past!.... ha ha ha :-) Thanks for sharing, it is always very interesting to see your publications!

I am only used to garden types. They have much smaller flowers and don't grow that big too.

Hahaha yea.. bad bad plant :)

She is looking at me... that red-jacketed little girl hahaha and she is saying something like: I heard in music schools teachers used rulers to bring discipline to the fingers :D

Hahaha she looks like knows what she is saying :D

I remember my teacher used to shake my elbows while playing so I loosen them up. So annoying :P

oh, yes, elbows, wrists, fingers 😆

now I am super careful, I sometimes announce my students : I will take your hand to show you how to play :)

With adult students : Can I touch you hand to show you how to play :)

I was not asked. I had my elbows attacked :P

Now it would be called harassment 😂

Haven’t seen one of these before @ewkaw
Such a beautiful sight.
It does look like the old picture of it so I think you are right with the identification. 😊
Have a great evening/ night!
