The gill parade

mushrooms gills bw 8.jpg

I really like when mushrooms flip their hats, exposing the gills. Not all fungi do that, but when they do, it's like an extra treat for the photographer (or me, at least).

This large one here was not shy about it either, and it is definitely one of my favourite ones of the bunch. It had a lovely brown hat, and the gills were so fatty... if you know what I mean. Very big, thick, and pronounced. But as with any other, it is also very gentle and easy to destroy just by touching it.

In a different part of the woods, I found amanita (I think). This was not the famous red type, so I didn't feel bad removing the colours :).

The lighter spots on the beige/brown hat look pretty cool in monochrome. And look how delicate the ruffles on the gills look.

Oh look...
More gills! :D
And more big, brave ones. I often find this type with water stored in their hats. I have no clue what they are. It doesn't even matter. They are pretty anyway.

And then there were two taller ones that I quickly shot at the edge of the forest.

I think it was in my previous black-and-white post that I mentioned that I liked the higher contrasts between the edges and the main object. Yea... I did that here too. The backgrounds were not bad, but the fewer distractions and more moody, mysterious darkness, the better. It's quite fun to play with all the options in Photoshop as well.

They are swimming pools for little insects 😉

Indeed, not all mushrooms can display their gills to us, mushrooms turning their hats invite us to witness how beautiful the gills are shown to us.
I love the big mushroom shot you posted today.

It's true, it's not very common to find mushrooms with the cap on the fly showing their gills, a very attractive side of a mushroom.
I love how these mushroom gills look in monochrome

Great monochrome shots. Will have to do some myself as well. It’s a bit cloudy outside and I love turning cloudy days into monochromes.

Great close-up photos!!! I'm always amazed how tiny things can look so perfect, the same as some other things in nature, but on a bigger scale!

Thanks for sharing!!

A great photoshoot and you made it in black and white which makes the elements of the mushroom itself even clearer.
