Rhipsalis pilocarpa bloom 2023 8.jpg

I like this plant.
The more I neglect it the better it grows. It even blooms when I am not looking :)
This is what is left from the blooming this year. The flowers do not last very long, just a couple of days, so I had to hurry to catch at least the few.

Rhipsalis pilocarpa

Long, long time ago when I was in primary school I go a cutting from from someone and since then it has been growing equally neglected in my room.
It has always been quite small plant, but growing many little branches every year and I have always liked it. It never bloomed though, probably due to too high temperatures in winter and dry air.

Many years later I got a cutting from that plant and planted it in my place. Different climate, a big change in temperatures between summer an winter, equal neglect and the plant is already bigger that the much oleder mother and it blooms.

Every year :)

I always knew it was a catus, but I thought it like a any other regular one.
Nop.. not even close :)

*In the wild Rhipsalis pilocarpa is an epiphyte, using a host tree for support but not parasitising or otherwise harming its host.
Native to Brazil , where it lives in tropical subtropical or tropical forests, hanging on branches or growing in the hollow of old trees. The main threat to the species is the rapid decline of the primary tropical forest (destruction and fragmentation of habitats, deforestation, etc.). Therefore, the species is classified as vulnerable.

Which basically means it grows like orchids :D
Pretty cool eh?
I grow it in a normal pot and even use the mix like for regular cacti. How it a world it didn't die for me yet, I don't know. But it works and I am not gonna change anything.

Flowers are small, round 1.5 cm in length with a slight fragrance.
The common name for it is Mistletoe cactus and comes from the fruits that form later. They look like tiny little balls. I can't recall if my one ever had any. The dry flowers usually just rop without being pollinated.

The spines are like tiny little hair. Completely harmless and don't even attach to the skin - some cacti o that and they usually cause terrible itch. Not this one. This one is a very friendly one.

This is the whole plant. It is doing pretty well in the clay po, but I keep at home, so the harsh sun doesn't have a chance to cook it.

Omg, my mom has this plant and it never ever bloomed! I didn't actually know it can bloom 😳 😅
It looks so different with these little white flowers. Nice 😇

She does? :D
It never bloomed for us in Poland either. I start to think it needs the colder autumn/winter to do that. It can get chilly here and I keep it near the open window.

They are cute, aren't they? :)

Hahaha, now I have doubts whether it is the same plant or not 😂

Yes it is! :D
It is probably happier there so it grows longer. Mine has hard time so all the little segments are short. That's my theory :p

But your is happier if it blooms :)
Maybe my mom's plant grows longer branches to outgrow the other plants as it is sharing the pot with one another plant 😅

Or it has more water/food to grow faster and my one just manages to grow the little bits. The flowers are a scream for attention :P

Same here. I had this plant for years, but had no clue it can have flowers! Plant itself is great and was easy enough to keep alive, but never get to chance to see how it blooms :(

So, Ewkaw's plant is really enjoying itself if it bloomed, as we all proved that this plant is a non-blooming one hahaha. Well, until her one brought the little white flowers ;)

I had had mine while I was living in Poland too, so maybe just climate isn't warm enough for them to bloom?

Or it thinks it will die and it starts to bloom in fear....

I had this plant few years back, while I was still living in Poland, I handed over it to my neighbour, hope it is doing better under her care:) Yours look great, I am thinking to buy it again, but UK is pretty cold as well. I would love to see how it blooms.
For now I had some luck w succulents, but this is level easy I assume:)

I've had this plant for a couple of years and I love it too, except mine is several times smaller than yours and hasn't bloomed yet. I also thought it was a cactus, but I noticed that it prefers water more than other succulents.

It is a cactus, but a little different one :)
Please show yours!

It is lovely :)
My old one (the mother of the one here) grows the longer stems sometimes too and then on the tips it starts to grow tons of little ones... It looks like little pom pom on long strings. Pretty cool. Hope yours do that too.

Wow, this is a beauty... I don't remember seeing it before... Here in my yard we have a similar one, it is commonly called "horsetail catus" (Rhipsalis baccifera) but this one is very big compared with this you've share today... It's a beautiful tiny and tender bonsay!...;)

I had to Google yours. It is really nice one and so much bigger! I bet the garden living suits him. My one is inside and maybe with more care it would be bigger.

Hello again dear @ewkaw friend... I know you love these plants, so today I took some quick photos of our horsetail catus specimen in the garden for you...

ZZ1.jpg

It is a specimen of more than a meter long and it has been there for about 30 years as my mother remembers.

ZZ2.jpg

ZZZB.jpg

Currently it has no flowers and there are very few fruits because some birds come and eat them.

ZZ3.jpg

And that huge head next to this plant is me sending greetings!... hee hee hee :))... Happy day!

Ohhh my its so big! <3 And so many little berries.
It is attached directly to the tree?

:) Yes, it behaves like an epiphytic plant, its roots cling to the bark of the tree but without piercing it... My mother says that this specimen has grown there without human intervention, but she has reproduced this using small pieces of the tips and placing these are in small pots with sand mixed with leaves.

Thos flowers are so pretty, like fairy flowers, gossamer. Lovely.

And I especially like this

The more I neglect it the better it grows.

My kind of plant!

Haha this type of plants are always the best :D

The flowers remind me the tiny jellyfish that float in large groups in the ocean... like little ghosts.

I just got a tiny cutting six months ago and it bloomed for me in a couple of months. I have it in a hanging pot and it gets a lot of sun. The stem segments are pretty long in my plant though maybe because I water it everyday.

Oh please show yours :)
It cold be that they grow longer because they get more water. I water my one once a week if I remember.. sometimes I forget for 2 weeks :p
Or maybe it is the type jlinaresp mentioned above. In Google they look like they have longer segments.

This is how mine looks.
It used to be like yours at first but now it is growing longer segments.

Oh nicey! :D
And it doesn't have the little hair. I wonder if it is another type. It's gonna be such a nice bush when it grows bigger :)

Yeah I guess I need to move it to a bigger pot since it has started to grow fast now. I would be wonderful to let it trail from a hanging basket in my balcony. It is commonly known as the mistletoe pencil cactus here.
