The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet - Becky Chambers
This was a re-read for me, so there was nothing exceptionally new I got out of reading it again. I gave it a 5/5 on my first read back on Oct 26, 2019 and I think I would give it a 4.5/5 now. The best way I can describe something I appreciate now that I didn’t appreciate then was the use of a pseudo-Chekov’s Gun when it applied to rising stakes. There is a specific book I was thinking of where the stakes tried to rise but kept getting hammered back down in ways that I couldn’t suspend disbelief, but the way Chambers establishes ahead of time that “this character is actually capable of solving this problem on its level because of this skill mentioned previously” was nicely done imo. The worldbuilding details felt like they were introduced organically and it felt like the cultures were different enough that it didn’t feel like “human plus”. Also, the death of Lovey sucked don’t get me wrong, but I did like that it was a gamble that they lost. It feels like I don’t see it that often, but that could just be me.
One thing I really like about the characters as individuals is how sincere they feel. Also, I remembered there was something up with Rosemary's dad but I thought it happened around the time we find out that Corbin's a clone. From an in-universe standpoint, it's SO in Rosemary's favor that Jenks asked her after the pirate raid
Sometimes it was too cheesy. Kizzy was a little bit too much. Plus I had a bit of a problem with Ashby and his no weapons policy. He even said later to not push your morals into others (Ohan problem) but he was doing the same. Other than that very feel good book. Vivid characters that you love, amazing world building and very interesting races and whole universe. Really glad I reread that, enjoyed it.
