Hive: Why I'm Still Here...

In July, 2023 I'll celebrate my sixth year on what is now known as Hive. It'll actually be my seventh, as I lurked starting in spring/early summer 2016 before diving in full-time the following year. I'll use the royal "we" when I say that we've seen all of the various ups and downs over the years, so much so that these cyclical "crypto winters" no longer phase me.

But to answer the question of why I'm still here, you have to know where I came from and the forces that drove me right into the welcoming arms of Hive.

Foundations

You see, one thing about me is that I love to read and I love to write. Born with a curious mind, in my teens, I was interviewing the local prostitutes about their line of work. I was and remain fascinated about how and why things and people work. I wanted to know why the people do the things that they do and the influences that shape perception and help create reality.

When I was in Job Corp, I found out about a group of Satanists, and took the opportunity to talk to them. They were surprised that a Christian would have any interest in them, but I knew this was a rare opportunity to hear from this secretive group and found out about the important connection that bloodlines have in passing these traditions down through the ages.

So if you want to be a writer, you have to be willing to research subjects that many might find offensive. I'm an information sponge who's always willing to learn new things.

With the advent of the internet, the world of blogging opened up to me as a place where I could learn the craft online. In the beginning, I didn't tell anyone about my tech blog as I wanted to work out the kinks and make my mistakes without anyone seeing them. Later on as my skill-set increased, I invited a small group of friends and co-workers to view and give critique on my writings.

Many adventures followed including the theft of my content, which caused me to leave the platform. I can still remember the day when I wondered if someone would ever find a way to combine blogging and crypto, then next thing you know, Steemit was born.

Still wary due to the abuses I suffered on Blogger I instead spent a year lurking on the platform, where I accustomed myself with the policies and the way things worked. Many of the people that you know now as whales, were just regular new bloggers back then and I have been blessed to witness their growth over the years. They're real people who were willing to put stakes in the ground to help get this new thing rolling and they deserve all of the success that they currently enjoy.

But the most important thing to realize, is that they all started out with that very first post - just as you and I did.

While I didn't have the funds to do so, many of them invested in "this thing of ours" on the blockchain, and that taught me the importance of using an accelerant to propel future growth on the platform. Sure, you could grind away without putting anything in, but things really sped up when you had some skin in the game, and they did.

Hive allowed me to reclaim my the sense of ownership over my content that I lacked on Blogger, where in effect, I was writing for them.

With an effective anti-plagiarism cohort, there would always be eyes out to take action against the wholesale theft of my work that I spent years trying to deal with alone. This had the effect of opening up the floodgates of creativity and allowed me to express myself like never before. Six years later, my stake is growing and so am I as a blogger.

The View From Here

So to those of you worried about the current "crypto winter," been there, done that many times before. Use this period as an opportunity to stack more HIVE, HBD, LEO, DHEDGE, SPS, CTP, BRO, SIM, POB, ARCHON, PIZZA, NEOXAG and more.

I take a long-term view and have a rock-solid belief in a bright future for LeoFinance and Hive. In my view, the token itself, is but an icon of the amazing community behind it.

Not to drop names (proceeds to do just that), but when I invest in those communities, I'm investing In Taskmaster, Khal, Meesterboom, Jongolson-Josediccus ("J&J"), Shortsegments, Tarazkp, Anomadsoul, Acesontop, Scaredycatguide, Geekgirl and most importantly, I'm investing in myself and the home I've built here on Hive. And THAT'S why I'm still here almost six years later and looking forward to the next six with a renewed sense of optimism and hope for the future.

Lol. I never mind a good name dropping on a good post!

You are quite right, these winters are always a time to stack and grow!

LOL!, thanks! Indeed, if people would release that fear they have during crypto dips, they could unlock the power inherent in the Hive community and build a brighter future for themselves in the world of crypto.

It's just like bear markets for stocks: that's when stocks are on sale (sometimes at bargain basement prices).

If finding money is an issue, it can always be diverted from some other expenditure. Do we really need to buy that 2nd bag of chips or that 3rd cup of outrageously overpriced coffee?

If any of us is able to bring in funds to accelerate growth, we should do that.

Right? It's a mindset thing and something people need to break through when they see the boom and bust cycles play out. Picturing the mental image of crypto currently being on sale, really helps as a FUD-fighter.

It helps to keep track of where your money is going. Years ago in the 2000's BH (Before Hive), I wondered the same and invested in Quicken software to track my spending. It was linked to my bank card and catagorized my spending each time I made a purchase.

I was shocked to find out I was spending $100 a month on magazines alone, and another $100+ on potato chips, soda and snacks from the vending machines. Drip, drip, drip and it adds up over time. You better believe I cut that all out.

Instead of buying mags at the bookstore at $5 a pop, I bought an annual subscription for $10 a year, you get the idea.

You don't know what you don't know, right?

Picture this: You're an impoverished person in a developing country. You start blogging on Hive and pull in enough to buy a food cart and stock it.

After you get back on your feet and develop some reserves, you go from someone who was powering down, to now someone who is buying HIVE and LEO and putting resources back into the system to help the next person.

And so it goes.

Six years is like half a decade on the Hive blockchain, you must've in many ways develop a 'thick skin in the game'. The reality is that the coins are nothing without the team/community behind it. So we're indeed investing in ourselves and fellow Hivers(Hivians?)

Exactly. Thick skin and diamond hands when it comes to Hive. By overcoming FUD, the community (Hivians), holds the power in its hands.

Right. That's the way to see it. The power is in the community itself.

By now those who are experienced know that the market goes so ups and downs ... now we are experiencing winter but spring will soon come!

This is definitely the right time to invest, increase your effort and accumulate in the future you will certainly see the fruits.

I agree that investing in Hive means investing in people and also in the relationships we create... they are on the same wavelength as you!

Seeing the people that are now whales start out just like you and me was inspiring. It's one of the reasons I refuse to do anything else but build, build, build! :)

It is a good opportunity to reinvest profits looking for that growth we all want, I have 2 years trying to get to Dolphin, I have had several stumbles along the way, this is my year I know.

Very inspiring your story of how you got to Blockchain, it is similar to mine only that I was looking for ways to mix gamer content to blockchain, Hive was for me the best option because in web 2 I couldn't find what Hive offers.

Greetings from Mexico and I wish you a successful 2023.

Isn't it amazing how it all worked out, me with blogging, and you with gaming? I can still remember the early days of what would become Splinterlands, as we all wondered how this new thing we'd built would turn out.

I left a somewhat subliminal message in the graphic I created at the top of the page. The Hive logo (representing us), and the phases of the Moon (representing my passage of time on Hive).

The message is:

Hive Mooning.

I'm sure many people got the hint in the message, and that's exactly what I see happening to those that tough it out and keep building! :)

It's definitely a process. This is my 3rd winter (I think) at least my 2nd. I came on board before all the drama but never gained any traction. Then, when Bitcoin crashed and the flag wars began, I dropped out for a couple years. I think I'm just beginning my 3rd year back. It's so hard to keep track with all the ups and downs. lol Anyway, it's been long enough to feel like "home".

It's a lot of fun to see the potential continue to grow and to share with the community the fruits of all that labor. Even though we're not doing the coding, we are part of the building. Our votes and our posts and comments help keep this place running. Without the community, there's really nothing here. It's like a tree falling in the forest...

I do get a little chuckle out of the "where will we be in 5 years" statements now since I've now actually been here 5 years and price-wise, we're no better than we were. lol That said, the difference in the potential is night and day. I think it's going to be a lot more fun (and gratifying) looking back from 2028.

In the meantime I'm continuing to stack. Our day is coming...

It's interesting. I took a peek in early enough that I saw people liquidating assets and making an early bet on what became Hive and "risky" early bets such as Splinterlands.

These people took a chance and planted their stake, and now are reaping the rewards of their willingness to help build the platform.

It was illuminating to see that play out over the years and only reinforced my connection (and belief) in the community.

I see your HIVE stake and feel the same joy about anyone willing to pitch in and help build this thing. We're just getting started, and I'm pumped for the future of LeoFinance and Hive!
