[ESP/ENG] Omara Durán Elías: Una cubana de ébano dorado

Hoy es uno de esos momentos en los que siento un gran orgullo de ser mujer y pertenecer a este país que se llama Cuba. No por gusto mi esposo dice que Cuba es una maravilla con nombre de mujer.

Para los que siguen pensando que las mujeres somos el sexo débil, cada día las mujeres se encargan de demostrar todo lo contario. Para nada es una cruzada contra los hombres, pero lo que acaba de hacer la protagonista de esta publicación creo que en Cuba ningún deportista lo ha hecho y ahí incluyo a los atletas de cualquier sexo y a los convencionales también.

Más allá de pretender hacer una publicación deportiva que no es mi fuerte, sí daré mis consideraciones, en torno a lo que acaba de hacer la que considero la atleta discapacitada cubana más grande de todos los tiempos y una de las mejores deportistas de la historia, su nombre Omara Durán Elías.

Cuando se revisa cualquier plataforma digital, Google o Wikipedia usted notará que no muchos atletas pueden exhibir el palmarés de esta santiaguera que con apenas 31 años ha tejido una de las historias más hermosas y admirables del deporte y la vida. Y, es que lo alcanzado por Omara Durán Elías no puede verse meramente como una historia de resultados en los que aparecen varios títulos en mundiales de Paratletismo, Juegos Paralímpicos, Juegos Parapanamericanos y de todos en cuanta competición haya participado.

Su historia es también un ejemplo de consagración y entrega porque cuando nos adentramos en la historia de esta guerrera nos percatamos que es madre, mujer, esposa, atleta, con los problemas que tenemos muchas de las mujeres que habitamos en este lado del planeta y que, además, debe entrenar, atender su salud visual, coordinar las acciones de entrenamientos y competitivas con su guía Yuniol Kindelán.

Cuando se revisa su historia uno se percata que sus resultados no han sido fruto de la casualidad. El esfuerzo y la consagración de la mujer cubana ha tenido y tiene su sello. A lo anterior hay que agregar los esfuerzos que ha tenido que sumar por su discapacidad visual, lo que no ha sido obstáculo para exhibir los resultados que tiene.

Por estos días se ha difundido bastante los títulos alcanzados en Campeonatos Mundiales de Paratletismo que suman un total de 14.

Su primer título en este mundial de Paratletismo de París 2023 llegó en los 400 metros planos. Cuando ganó y de la forma en que lo hizo todos imaginábamos lo que sucedería porque no es su carrera preferida y ganó con mucha diferencia de por medio. Después llegaría el oro de la prueba reina del atletismo y este lunes coronaría su actuación con el oro en los 200 metros planos.

Pero revisando la página Wikipedia nos maravillamos con la hermosa historia que tiene en Juegos Paralímpicos en los que atesora 8 medallas de oro en tres de las cuatro participaciones, pues, si su palmarés olímpico no es superior se debe a una lesión que sufrió en 2008 que la privó de subir a lo más alto del podio cuando era favorita para ganar la medalla de oro.

Otros elementos distinguen la carrera de Omara Durán y es el hecho de poseer los récords mundiales de las tres distancias en las que compite (100m, 200m y 400m) y ganar todas las competencias con relativa facilidad. Cuando usted hace un recuento de la vida deportiva de esta guerrera se percata que sus competencias son una cita con la medalla dorada.

Para que se tenga una idea de la grandeza de Omara Durán podemos decirles que no hay ningún atleta cubano que tenga la cantidad de medallas doradas olímpicas y/o mundiales que ella ostenta, pues a sus 22 títulos le siguen los 9 de Mijaín López, los 8 de Iván Pedroso y los 7 de Julio César la Cruz.

Después de todo lo hecho por esta gigante cubana sólo nos queda admirar su obra y estar muy orgullosos y orgullosas de todo cuanto ha hecho por nuestro deporte para discapacitado y en general.

Today is one of those moments when I feel very proud to be a woman and to belong to this country called Cuba. It is not for nothing that my husband says that Cuba is a wonder with a woman's name.

For those who still think that women are the weaker sex, every day women prove the opposite. This is not at all a crusade against men, but what the protagonist of this publication has just done, I believe that no athlete in Cuba has ever done it, and I include athletes of any sex and conventional athletes as well.

Beyond pretending to make a sports publication which is not my forte, I will give my considerations about what has just been done by what I consider the greatest Cuban disabled athlete of all time and one of the best athletes in history, her name Omara Durán Elías.

When you check any digital platform, Google or Wikipedia you will notice that not many athletes can display the track record of this santiaguera who with just 31 years has woven one of the most beautiful and admirable stories of sport and life. The fact is that Omara Durán Elías' achievements cannot be seen merely as a history of results in which there are several titles in World Parathletics, Paralympic Games, Parapan American Games and any other competition in which she has participated.

Her story is also an example of consecration and dedication because when we go into the history of this warrior we realize that she is a mother, woman, wife, athlete, with the problems that many of us women who live on this side of the planet have and that, in addition, she must train, take care of her visual health, coordinate the training and competitive actions with her guide Yuniol Kindelán.

When one reviews her history, one realizes that her results have not been the result of chance. The effort and consecration of Cuban women has had and has its seal. To the above must be added the efforts she has had to make due to her visual disability, which has not been an obstacle to show the results she has achieved.

These days, the titles she has won in the World Parathletics Championships, which total 14, have been widely publicized.

His first title in this World Parathletics Championships in Paris 2023 came in the 400 meters. When he won and the way he did it, we all imagined what would happen because it is not his favorite race and he won with a big gap in between. Then came the gold in the queen event of athletics and this Monday he would crown his performance with the gold in the 200 meters flat.

But reviewing the Wikipedia page we marvel at the beautiful history she has in the Paralympic Games in which she has 8 gold medals in three of the four participations, because, if her Olympic record is not superior is due to an injury she suffered in 2008 that deprived her of climbing to the top of the podium when she was a favorite to win the gold medal.

Other elements distinguish Omara Duran's career and that is the fact that she holds the world records for the three distances in which she competes (100m, 200m and 400m) and wins all competitions with relative ease. When you take a look at the sporting life of this warrior, you realize that her competitions are an appointment with the gold medal.

To give you an idea of the greatness of Omara Durán we can tell you that there is no Cuban athlete who has the number of Olympic and/or world gold medals that she holds, since her 22 titles are followed by the 9 of Mijaín López, the 8 of Iván Pedroso and the 7 of Julio César la Cruz.

After all that has been done by this Cuban giant, we can only admire her work and be very proud of everything she has done for our sport for the disabled and in general.
