The Pumpkin Festival
Today I'd like to take you to another festival I visited yesterday. This is an annual event, organized each year since 2015 and attracting visitors from all over the country. The event is held mid October in Sovata, a nice tourist town in Transylvania, packed during summer but not only.
To be honest, I had no idea there's a pumpkin festival in Sovata and when I found out, knew right away that I'm not going to miss it. It's mid autumn, the weather is still nice, but it's going to change soon, so this was another occasion to enjoy a wonderful sunny day and celebrate autumn.
The festival began on Friday, with a vast offer for every age group and taste, starting with the participants (schools, kindergartens) setting up their decorations at the designated place. There were different workshops for kids, than later in the evening there was the long awaited concert.
We started the journey on Saturday, right at the beginning of the road decorated with pumpkins, at the Crystal Hotel, where I had the chance to photograph the biggest pumpkin I saw that day. The orange autumn mascot of the hotel weighted 174.5kg, which is huge. The biggest pumpkin I've seen so far has been an 50kg one, brought by my dad's neighbor. They are planning to buy some seeds again, so let's hope they get bigger pumpkins next year.
Imagine a kilometer long road decorated with pumpkins, not to mention the crafters who showed up with amazing products for this occasion. You could buy lots of souvenirs, but I'm going to write about that in another post.
Autumn is one of my favorite seasons for the wonderful colors nature provides us with and at a pumpkin festival you can be sure you find all the autumn colors.
Where there's a festival, there's food and plenty to drink as well. These terraces were all dressed up in autumn's beauty. This one was special as it was set up by 11th graders. The stones were painted with typical Hungarian folk elements, like the tulip for example. Chrysanthemums could not be missing from the festival either, as that's the typical autumn flower here.
This pumpkin lady was sitting at a terrace of the restaurant, holding a beer can in her right hand. Not an elegant gesture for a lady if you ask me, but she was at the festival after all. Look at the lady's hand, she has red nails 😄
I bet this carved pumpkin head looked good in the evening, with a nice candle lit inside it. Unfortunately we did not see it as we had to come home.
Here's the second largest and heaviest pumpkin of the festival, weighing 88.8kg (they say). What I loved about the decoration was the presence of autumn products, like dry corn, onion braids (that is how onion is dried during autumn in villages) and paprika garlands.
Some people had a funny idea and this was not the only funny setup. The purplish flower on the left is called the Erica flower, so yes, my name is a flower 😄
These 6th graders had a really original idea about how to decorate the pumpkins. Have you ever seen sports pumpkins? I haven't till now, but it's lovely to see tennis rockets carved on the pumpkin, Olympic symbols, different sports activities painted on them. Excellent idea I must admit.
This was the third pumpkin with a drink, but not the last one. 7th graders did well here.
Another pumpkin with a bottle in its mouth, but that's not even the biggest joke here. The bottle looked a bit funny and wanted to see what kind of drink that was. Turns out it's Transylvanicum, which must be a funny reminder of the Unicum, the famous drink we all know.
While looking at these pumpkins, I was thinking what I would do if given such a task. Imagine knowing a bunch of others will be participating too and you need to create something unique. Carving a usual pumpkin face is not an option anymore. You need to be more creative and come up with some original ideas.
These 7th graders did well. I love the flower eyed pumpkin.
These people were selling pumpkins, so if you were in the mood, you could buy a small one for 1€, a bit bigger one for 2€ and pay way more for the long and/or the big ones. There were also pumpkin hats for sale, for 5€, so if you were in mood for some goofing around, you could be a pumpkin head. I saw many wearing these hats.
These were brought by 4th graders. Would have loved to watch their excitement while carving and painting these pumpkins.
These were 3rd graders, even younger than the previous pumpkin artists, yet look at them, they brought a ship, two cats, a skull and a clown. Looks like imagination and creativity has no limits.
At the moment I have 4 medium size pumpkins on my desk, all from my dad's garden but otherwise I would have brought home a few as I love these, they are so cute.
As I advance with the photos, the age of the participants are decreasing as these kids were 2nd graders.
If I will ever have the chance to carve a pumpkin, I would make a pumpkin house, like that on the photo above. It's very cute. The last time I carved a pumpkin was with my grandfather, when I was in elementary school.
I hope that you can see by now, that creativity has no limits, regardless of the age, everyone was a talented pumpkin artist and this is just the first batch, there will be another post with more pumpkins soon. There are no bad pumpkin artworks. I hope you enjoyed the tour so far.
Here's the Facebook page of the festival.

this is very beautiful, i did not know for such a event to be celebrated.
thanks for sharing this
:)
This is the 8th edition there and who know how many other events there are worldwide. It's a nice one.
Knowing these events all around the world is very relaxing and beautiful.
There are events everyday differents, i would like to have more time follow them outside Albania too.
thanks for publishing that.
:)
That's one big talent there, I have never heard of a pumpkin festival, at least in this part of the world.
But I like all the colours and pumpkins I am seeing all around, it makes the city looks like a fairy land. Hehe
I bet there are bigger ones in the US. The colors of the pumpkins are fantastic. I love the orange the best, but the yellow/green is also nice.
Yeah, judging by the vibrant colours I can see that they are really good
Congratulations, your post has been added to Pinmapple! 🎉🥳🍍
Did you know you have your own profile map?
And every post has their own map too!
Want to have your post on the map too?
Beautiful pumpkin festival very cute, very colorful and creative student designs.
Thank you!
The pumpkin festival in Sovata, pumpkins are synonymous with Halloween. Where I live, pumpkin is also one of the favorite fruits used for various food preparations. This is a series of proof that pumpkin is a fruit that is in demand throughout the world, even though there are several differences in its use.
Those that are used for cooking, baking are a bit different. These are mostly for decoration purposes and for livestock to feed.
But are the pumpkin varieties at the fair edible?
Some of them, but not those nice ones. You could also buy baked pumpkin to eat it right away.
Wow! This looks beautiful, I haven't heard of pumpkin festival before. Really, this is creativity at it peak.
You can check YouTube, there are a bunch of videos about pumpkin festivals.
How interesting about your name 🌺👍.
All the photos very creative, here in Venezuela we know it with the name Auyama.... I like the auyama cake with raisins type quesillo 😋 it is very tasty 👍.
Greetings @erikah nice to see you again 🤗
Pumpkin cakes are popular here too, although I'm not a big fan.
Thanks for the comment @elizpc.
What a lovely festival! So many pumpkins...of all sorts. I never knew there were pumpkins of those shapes and sizes. Wow.
And i know 7c and 8b are full of boys. Look at those designs 😆 amazing works!!
It was indeed lovely, full of funny pumpkins. We have a great variety here and imagine, I did not even see those types I have on my table.
No way! Do you have a crystal ball? 😂 How do you know that? Maybe they are from sports school.
I don't need a crystal ball. I just know from the designs.
But also could be sports 😆
We don't have classes of single gender here, unless there's no interest from the other gender. But that happens later, in high school, maybe at technical classes, but I think not even there. So 7c and 8b is 99% guaranteed a mixed class 😉😏
They must have eaten the girls' pumpkins 😆
Lol, it is a possibility, who knows? 😁
Love this! When I was a kid I used to have a lot of fun admiring the faces drawn on pumpkins and even decorate them on my own. Too bad I haven't done this activity in at least 10 years! It used to be fun..
I loved it too. And you have a huge advantage as I did such thing more than 10 years ago. But if things go the way I want, maybe next year we can plant some in the garden and carve them.
Og this is so unique and very innovative"Pumpkin festival". I know people had a lot of preparation for this but it doesn't matter because they enjoy it too. Thanks for sharing.
You are right, I bet those kids had a lot of fun :)
Wow!! I don’t get to see creative pumpkins here so this is such a cool festival I would want to go one day!
I hope you can attend one soon. Are your Japanese celebrating Halloween?
There’s a Halloween event. Apparently it’s one of the biggest events here but no pumpkin festivals like this one. Halloween here is like dressing up and party.
Too much talent of the artist.
The pumpkins are very cool.
There was a lot of talent there for sure.
Pumpkin festival? Well, never imagined it existed 😅
I have never carved a pumpkin - neither in the school 😒
😲 wow, that's a lot, indeed!
How come you never imagined it existed? 😮
And never carved a pumpkin? Unforgivable!!! You need to make up the lost time and carve a pumpkin asap and also visit a pumpkin festival 🎃 🎃 🎃
Imagine if there were a pumpkin carving challenge on Hive. Not a bad idea. Maybe next year we can do it. Do you have possibility to get a pumpkin?
We can still do it hahaha.
Yes, I can get a pumpkin, though not sure about the type of it 😂
We need those that are long or tall as the rest that is edible doesn't look good.
I spoke to my dad and we're going to grow those Halloween pumpkins in the garden next year and then let the fun begin 😁
I saw some good ones in Lidl today but I was on foot, so no way I would carry one home 🙁
Hm, then I have no good pumpkin here. I got two of those edibles, with thin peel. So, it would not work
Should look for a different one, I have one year to find it hahah
Starting NOW 😂
Exactly! We can make something cool to involve the blockhain, and we have one year to prepare for it 😆 Fingers crossed that you can find something. Look around if there are Halloween parties, there must e pumpkin there, ask them where they got it from 😏
Perfect. This could indeed be fun!
I would even add to this - let's carve runes into pumpkins 😁
Runes? I dunno what that is, but I'm in! 🤣
Good!!! You will not regret it 😆
😂
So you won't tell me what that word means? 🤔 hangjegyek? 🎃
Az könnyű lenne 🎶🎶
Kotta? 🤔
When I heard the word pumpkin I will always remember my three year old son because he called our squash here pumpkin 🎃 since he's been watching YouTube videos and he learn the word pumpkin not squash Lol
Anyways that's kind of creative and unique festival. It showcase the creativity of each person who join the said Festival
Lol, at 3 years old, you can't expect him to make a difference between pumpkin and squash 😄
True. It's hard to explain. Just like the color purple that he learn from watching videos. In school it's not purple but violet. We can't find purple in primary and secondary colors lol
He needs to grow a bit older, then you'll see he'll understand.
Yeah I guess so
Hi, so you're a flower 😁
I wonder how many people can eat from that big pumpkin... or not, since I like sweets, how many pumpkin flan would come out of there.
It's so much fun to see what all those little pumpkin artists do.
The sporty pumpkins look super cool 😍/
Beautiful colors, one is filled with joy just looking here.
Lol, I'm not a flower, but my name comes from a flower 😁
That big pumpkin is not for human consumption, it's staple for animals. I mean you can eat it, but doesn't taste good. There are other types that taste better.
Th sporty pumpkins were very cool, I've never seen anything similar.
It was a nice autumn vibe all day.
😂
I figured, we couldn't eat that.
Do you know anything about pumpkins when they're growing, you can't point or touch them? Because they go bad? Do they fall over? There's a belief here about that.
I have never heard such thing and I don't think it's true. I have to ask my dad but he's never told anything like that to me.
It's not an elegant gesture for a lady, I agree. Lol.
I have never heard of Pumpkin festival before until I read this post. And I do love the designs and drawings shown. They all look beautiful.
Also, I agree that when there's a festival, there's food and that means.... lots of fun🥳🥳.
At least I was able to show you something you've never seen 😄
It was a lot of fun, for sure.
Hehe, that's right. You are amazing 😇😇.
Wow thats a lot of decorated pumpkins. I'm sure the kids had a fun time painting, carving, and decorating. I last carved one a few years ago to put out on the deck.
We had an Army unit that prepared a bunch of airdrop pallets we loaded up. One of them had a huge pumpkin in the center surrounded and braced with card board. I never found out if it survived or not from the drop.
All these pumpkins and talk has got me ready for some homemade pumpkin pie 😋 😂 Catcha later Erika "The Flower" 😁
Imagine being 7 or 8 and preparing something it's going to be visited by thousands. I would have liked to be one of them.
Lol, imagine that pumpkin landing and breaking into thousands of pieces.
Maybe I should make a pumpkin pie, but I'm on diet 😟
Lol, I'm not a flower, my name means flower, or it's the name of a flower 😂
I almost forgot I seen this on the news the other day since we're on pumpkins:
Not far from where I live. I guess he broke the world record 11 hours/38 miles paddling on river. Would you use a pumpkin for a floatation device? 🤣 😂 🤣 I don't think I would try. There's some people who grow some big ones here.
Holy molly, can't be convenient to use a pumpkin as a boat.
Me? Hell no!!! 😂
Maybe we're going to grow some big ones next year. Let's see how things evolve, but I'm definitely looking for seeds and we're planning a challenge next year with @mipiano already 😏 Maybe you can drive to the countryside and buy a big one and carve it. Are you in? Again, next year, not this one as this one is gone already.
Next year I'm going to fiddle a bit with gardening for the first time on my own. Hmm pumpkin seeds?? I'd rather grow my own but have to do some searching and learning, hehe. If not there's plenty around to buy. Alright I'm in!! Just a friendly competition with carving and painting a pumpkin right?
Yay!!!! I'm glad you are in! If you can't grow your own, you can sure buy one and that's what I'm planning to do, let's see if we can get some decent seeds and get nice pumpkins.
Not even a competition, it's more like getting people together on Hive, to be a bit more creative. It'll be fun planning what we're going to carve into those pumpkin heads and then show them off on Hive 😁
I love it!! The entire Halloween and happy style is beautiful!!
I couldn’t find the lady with the red nails and now I’m very curious, lol
Great post!
This was not for Halloween, this was just a simple festival to show off the pumpkins.
This is the lady with red nails 😁
Oh!! I love it!! I didn’t realized!!
Look at her, she has lipstick, nail polish and even make - up 😁
It sounds like the pumpkin festival in Sovata was a delightful experience! The creativity displayed by participants of all ages is truly impressive.
It was a wonderful event for all ages. Do you have anything similar at where you Live?
No, I don't have idea actually =D
That's a big pumpkin!!! The biggest i saw in my country was one around 111kg
That is big too :)
174 Kg! God, that was a really big pumpkin. I would be proud if I were them.
Wait as other had like 350kg pumpkins, just not at this festival :)
