Photographing And Evaluating Art

avatar

Last week I went to visit an art gallery, that is for amateur artists and it's with sales too. It's not the first for me, but somehow this time I looked at the whole thing from a different perspective and all this thanks to Hive. I can't tell you why exactly or how is this thanks to Hive, but it's a positive thing for sure.

Lately the majority of the art galleries I visited have been museums and exhibitions, where there's no price tag to look at or evaluate the price of the painting from, so you look at each piece and see what it represent, maybe form an idea about how much it could worth but since none of those are for sale, I don't think anyone is thinking about a price.

Unfortunately the setup in this gallery can't come close to what you can find at a museum. The curator told me the artworks are changed every two weeks, so the paintings are simply hung on the wall for two weeks, sold if there's a buyer and that's it. However, the setup was not why I went to visit the gallery. I wanted to see the paintings and get some inspiration.

When I saw the first two paintings, I knew right away this is not going to be something usual.

My photographing skills were seriously put to the test as none of the paintings were standing straight, so I tried my best, but ... in the end, art is what matters here today.

The artist's name is Terezia Conțiu, I personally have never heard of her, it's the first time I meet her artworks.

This was one of the artworks that captured my attention, for the color combination. The black background was a good choice and you can buy me with the orange, yellow, red combination anytime. Here the artist added baby blue and a nice green, which goes perfectly with the other colors. Looking at those circles, all seem pretty perfect and of the same size, so this makes me believe the artist may have used something to help her getting perfect circles.

When I entered the gallery, there were two ladies handling the administrative work but no visitors at all, which was perfect for me as I don't like the crowd in galleries. This gallery is one room basically and it's not even big, so one of the ladies rushed to me and offered a price list, which is helpful if you have the intention to buy something, but I was there to take photo, so my strategy was to look around first, take photos and look at the price list later, which worked like a charm. I was able to decide which one I liked first, then see how much each costs. Prices were ranging from 100 euro to 250 euro and what surprised me, and not in a good way was that prices were set based on the size of the paintings. Not the best policy in my opinion but I wasn't the one creating these artworks, so the artist knows better how to set the price.

This is where the disappointments started. Not that I'm an expert, but I spotted something that I did not like on the painting on the left. Those white dots look like done with a stencil. I could be wrong of course and obviously no one said the whole artwork should be manual work, but using a stencil is kind of a no in this category for me.

That dotty stencil again on the painting in the middle. If I were to choose one from here, I would definitely pick the one on the right.

There were no titles here, so I was saved from the torture of guessing what the artist was thinking of, when painting, or why the title is what it is.

I sure did a crappy job here as could have chosen a better angle.

Disappointment struck again here, when I seemed to recognize the pattern on the left, which looked similar to the second painting I uploaded at the beginning of the post. It's not the same obviously, but has a lot of similarities.

20221104_142833a.jpg

This painting caught my eye the minute I entered the gallery due to the color combination as I love those shades, light green, green and blue, but that was kind of all that I liked about it. Then disappointment struck again.

20221104_142845a.jpg

Just to be clear, I'm not criticizing anyone as who am I to do that. Every artist is free to do what they want, paint unique paintings or several of the same type. I still appreciate it as they know more than me in this regards, so hats off. It's my fault that I could not see reality and having been used to museums and exhibitions, I did not think of finding similar artworks at the same place the same time.

However, I would be happy to hang the painting on the second photo on my wall. Would I pay 180 euro for it? No way. I could 30x that money in a year or two, while the painting will not even 2x till then, I'm sure of that 😂. Yeah, I know!

Soooo, which one is your favorite today?

Although I really like the colors and they look very nice, this type of abstract art is not my thing. I like more paintings with stories and characters. with expressive techniques.

Abstract art is hard to understand and not always pleasant to the eye.

My favorite is the top painting in the first photo. But I certainly wouldn't pay 150 euros for it. I don't know, I don't like the paintings here either. They look like random drawings to me and I don't like paintings that don't tell me something.

I've been to quite a lot of exhibition this year, have seen a lot and maybe this one is the last, if I want to make a list of what I liked most.

The paintings you post are very beautiful, I really like to see people who paint things, but for me personally, painting is not an easy job, only people who have god-level skills can do it.

You're not alone as I can't paint either. You have to be born for that and practice a lot.

All the paintings are nice. But the one that captured your attention (the second painting), captured my attention as well. It is my favorite. 🎨

Please how do you watermark the images you shot. Do you do that before adding the images to the article or there is a tool in the writing phase that automatically add the watermark @erikah at the bottom right?

I literally love it, and would like to do that to my personally shot images as well. 😇😇

I use Picasa and write my name on each and every photo I upload. You can do that too as I think Picasa is free.

Ummm, not an expert but like you the only painting that got my attention is by Terezia Conțiu. The color palette is eye-catching. But I think the artist tried to paint the bubbles and failed. I could be wrong though, they might just be circles.

Rest,,,I don't know what to comment.

Well, she's the only one who knows how those bubble were made. I guess she would have answered my question at the opening but I never attend those as you can't photograph the artworks due to the crowd.

All the paintings are beautiful to me. I really admire people who can do these things for I don't have gifted hands like them.

I also admire them as I can't paint. I suppose you can learn some skills but it's not the same as being born talented.
