Cherhana Restaurant And The Fortified Evangelical Church Of Buzd

avatar

Today I'm going to walk you through a place that is both interesting and sad in the same time. I'm going to show you the Evangelical church and a restaurant. I think it's best to start with the church and then continue, or finish with the restaurant.

Buzd.jpg

The village is called Buzd, Szászbuzd is Hungarian and it is located at a distance of 5 km southeast of Mediaș, Sibiu county. For me it was the first time, but I hope not the last. Not because the village is so beautiful, but because of the delicious food the restaurant is serving those who are eager to spend an hour or two at the terrace next to a lake, admiring the beauty of nature. But let's take it step by step.

The Fortified Church

The fortified church is on a hill, as expected. These fortified structure had their own purpose, besides serving as a church, so building them on a hill is not a surprise.

20231008_134737a.jpg

To get to the church, you need to climb some stairs, so wearing comfortable shoes would be recommended.

20231008_134758a.jpg

At the top of the first set of stairs, there's the village kindergarten, which is not a surprise as back when the fortress was built, schools and any for of educational institution was run by the church and the priest was the teacher.

20231008_134813a.jpg

Another set of stairs under the wooden cover seemed to be the way up to what is called fortified church. When I saw this, it gave me Sighișoara vibes, a term most likely only @gabrielatravels would understand. (She's going to mute me for tagging her every day 🙈).

20231008_134825a.jpg

I knew what I'm going to find as I've done my homework, and the condition of the wooden gate just confirmed my expectations.

20231008_134839a.jpg

The stairs are the original, made of stone. While walking up on those stairs, it's impossible not to think of how many people walked there up and down, before me, over the centuries.

20231008_134907a.jpg

At the top, there were two doors on each side, leading to a house on the right and on the left you could walk along the wall I suppose.

20231008_134923a.jpg

Curtains on the window indicated that the house was inhabited, but who knows. On the right side door there was a sign letting people know there's an angry dog there. No one knows when was that sign posted on the door, but the sight was not giving me confidence to go on and see what's there.

20231008_134912a.jpg

At the top of the stairs, there was another wooden door, leading inside the fortress, but it was closed. That was expected as the church is not in use anymore.

In the Middle Ages it was a village inhabited mostly by Saxons. It is currently inhabited mostly by Roma. source

20231008_135133a.jpg

After finding closed doors, I went round to see if i can find an angle to take some photos of the church and this was the best I could do.

This church is going to disappear in the upcoming future, as the inhabitants of the village are of other ethnicity an other religion (if any). It's a shame as there's an organ in the church, that was built by Samuel Mätz in 1823.

The late-gothic hall church stands in the centre of the village green. The choir with a 5/8 apse is oriented towards the south. The brick building with stepped buttresses has a groin vault with penetrations and a network of brick ribs; further up, stands a two-storey defence structure with loopholes. At present, the church is surrounded by an approximately 2m-high wall; there is a gate house with a wall-walk in the northern section of the wall. The plain inner decoration is dominated by the Baroque altar.

Accessing this link, you can see the inside of the church and read the whole history of it. It's painful to see such a nice church, which had been the spiritual home of so many, on its way of disappearance.

20231008_134711a.jpg

I'm not going to show you the village, as there's nothing t see there, except for the poverty and all the rest that comes with it. When we drove through the city, every head turned after us and after seeing what was there, I was almost afraid to leave the car unattended. We didn't go far, so nothing bad happened.

Cherhana Denisa Restaurant, Guesthouse

The restaurant and guesthouse is located way before the entrance of the village and has a strange name I'm never going to remember, but that's the name of the owner and they have thought it's a good idea to use it.

The building has a hexagonal form and has two levels, but there's a terrace over the lake, where you can enjoy the beauty of the place.

20231008_140735a.jpg

Looking at this photo makes me smile as there's a funny story here. We didn't want to go inside as the weather was nice and it was better to sit here, have some fresh air, instead of being locked in a room. Then someone asked me why is the terrace empty, which is a legit question. They say a good restaurant is always busy and I fully agree with that statement. Actually this place is usually packed, but the day of our visit, it was overcast, the wind was blowing as well. So I told the person who asked me, that are not trained for this weather. In my eye, if it's not raining, the weather is good. But in case of a terrace, it's ok if it's raining too.

20231008_140609a.jpg

That's the guesthouse. I have checked out their Fb page, the rooms are ok, but unless it's for an event, I don't think I would book a room there.

20231008_140614a.jpg

20231008_140542a.jpg

This is the lake, which is full of fish, but the fish they are serving is not from the lake.

20231008_140438a.jpg

It's October already, so the place was nicely decorated to celebrate autumn.

20231008_140603a.jpg

20231008_140620a.jpg

There was this basket full of bread leftovers, which seemed odd, but then I saw birds helping themselves. It seems like not a bad idea, but if you think a bit deeper, bread contains yeast and bids don't need yeast.

20231008_141438a.jpg

We didn't eat anything this time. I had a lemonade, which was good, but I'm planning to go back and have a complete fish menu next time I'm in the area.

Your pictures are just wow!!! So beautiful and clear.
It’s a pity such a historical church is slowly fading out. I wonder what happened to the Christians there.
The restaurant looks very classic, nice photos.

Thank you! Well, this place is inhabited mostly by gypsies and no one wants to live with them. Some are religious, but not of evangelic religion, so the church most likely will become a ruin, if no one takes the case into their hands.

Oh, that is very understandable.
It's obvious that no one would take up such a case. The place has already been vacated by the people who care about the church.
Thank you for sharing.

She's going to mute me for tagging her every day 🙈

I'm actually going to fell in love if I keep seeing so many notifications from you! Hahaha.

To make it more clear, I feel honoured to get tagged in your posts no matter what the subject is. 😀

As for the church and the stairs that indeed are very similar to those from Sighisoara.. it's literally the first time hearing about this place. Which makes it weird as I'm used to either have visited what you post, or plan to do so in the future. Now you also unlocked the achievement of making me find out about a place I had no clue it existed until today. Thanks for that! 🙀

Music to my ears, or to my eyes? 🤔

No worries as I had no idea about this place either. I was invited to the restaurant and before leaving, I thought, let's check out the place on the internet, to see what we have to know about it. Then I saw there's a church and we drove there. Otherwise I wouldn't have known either. Now it's pinned to the map.

Looks interesting place.
The lake is quiet, I can't imagine that there are many fish in it.

Well, we saw a lot of them, but too small. They say there are bigger ones too, but they must have been hiding :D

It's interesting to learn that the terrace is usually bustling, and your perspective on good weather made me smile. Looking forward to hearing about your experience when you get to try their complete fish menu!

Did you get a chance to learn more about the current inhabitants of the village and their perspective on the church?

The current inhabitant are gypsies, or roma, or romani, whatever they want to call themselves. After the Saxon's left, the village was left almost uninhabited and this is why most of the gypsies were relocated to these houses. Most of them got the house for free. These people however, are known for taking (very often stealing), begging, doing nothing, and not for being hard workers and builders. So in the absence of the Saxons, the village is not going in the right direction.

Waaaa it's such a waste the church would disappear in the future 😞
It contains a lot of history, but too bad it's not being used anymore.
The resto and its view and the lake all seem fine, definitely looks popular among people who come to the area - I mean I would enjoy a drink there too! 😅
You said you won't stay in their guesthouse.. Is it bad? Or nothing special? Or not safe?

Indeed. It would be nice to see the government stepping in and help, but budgets are always tight.

I said I would not stay there, because it's a remote area, it's at 5km from the city and there's nothing around. The rooms look ok, but not really up to 2023's standards. So if you attend a wedding, or whatever event, which ends late, it's ok to spend the night there, but as a tourist destination, it would not be my choice. The food however is one to attract people. I'm going to go back next year for sure.

I wish I could send you a drink 😅

The photos are wow! The restaurant looks beautiful, it is sad to see such a place empty. And the church has a great history, the stairs looks nice too. It's a pity it will disappear in no time.

Yes, it was the spiritual home of so many over the years, but that era has ended.

Such old age buildings and hotels are built in such a beautiful place where many scenic views can be seen, so it is a great pleasure and relaxation to visit here.

I remember drinking lemonade now because I have a cough. Anyway, the place and the food perfectly matched. Thank you for bringing us with its historical background.

The weather is actually soothing and the environment of the guesthouse is great, I love there’s water surrounding some part of it.

That’s definitely a lot of stairs. One might get tired climbing.
