At The Mărțișoare Market
It's that time of the year again, when people are preparing for the big day, which is the 1st of March.
Mărțișor (Romanian pronunciation: [mərt͡siˈʃor]) is the Romanian name of a tradition celebrated at the beginning of spring, in the month of March, and the name of the associated object made from two intertwined red and white strings with hanging tassel in Romania and Moldova, very similar to Martenitsa tradition in Bulgaria and Martinka in North Macedonia and traditions of other populations from Southeastern Europe.
The word Mărțișor is the diminutive of marț, the old folk name for March (martie, in modern Romanian), and literally means "little March".
Modern tradition involves wearing the small object on the chest like a brooch or a lapel pin, during the first part of the month, starting from 1 March. source
This is an old tradition still going on today. Men give women a gift on the 1st day of March. Some prefer to give these traditional mărțișoare, while others gift women flowers.
I remember when I first posted about this tradition on Hive, then I saw a post from a user from Bulgaria. She's not active anymore, but back then she posted about their tradition, which is similar to ours. I had no idea and was amazed to learn through Hive about it. Since then I suppose I've been posting about it each year.
Each year there's a market dedicated to products for this event. You see vendors all over the city, selling mărțișoare, flowers and small souvenirs. I'm a regular already, trying to visit the market every time, to see what's new, each year. These mărțișoare have changed a lot over the years and those that were popular when I was a school girl are not sold anymore. Those were simple and mostly the same every year. Chimney sweep, clover, horseshoe, snow flower, heart, ladybug, these were the most common then.
Today, sky is the limit as far as creativity is regarded. The offer is huge, so if you want to make sales, you need to come up with something unique and new. Today there were two types of vendors at the market, artisans and those selling the same thing, which was what they bought at bulk. I was only interested in the first category, but I'm going to show you some of the latter as well.
This was the first thing I saw at the market today and was already happy s these were quite nice. I've seen these before, but that's not a problem.
These wee next, fridge magnets, not exactly souvenirs for the occasion, but most of them were so funny, so I bought one. Actually some were funny, others were for different occasions. Now reading the text of most of the magnets, I realized I have to go back and buy one for a relative as he likes to fish and would like it for sure. I bought one and I'm going to show you which one a bit later.
Label said these had Swarowski crystals. I don't know what to think, but the price was definitely established as if it was really Swarowski crystal. Some were quite cute I must say.
The funny thing was that I entered the market, made like 10 steps and took out my wallet 3 times 😂. Here was the third time.
When I saw this cutie, could not resist and bought one, for 1€.
There were pink ladies as well, but I don't like pink.
This intertwined red and white string is only used on this day and it's tied to this occasion only. As you can see, now you can buy bracelets, hair bands etc.
Looking at the great variety today, was thinking I could create some for my to be "souvenir shop" 😃.
These were hand made, like most and cute too. That dark brown wooden background made them look good.
These were made using quilling technique. I've never see similar before, but I liked them.
These were made by recycling paper. I know that technique. I see this guy at every single fair, selling, or trying to sell magnets, plates, boxes made of recycled paper.
These are the magnets you see at every fair.
These were made f dry flowers, a very original idea in my opinion. Could have chosen a few.
This is what I came home with. The cutie and the magnet. The message on the magnet is in Hungarian and it says:
I'm not an alcoholic, I just don't have time to get sober.
I found it funny.
And this is my cutie pie 😃
I don't even dare to ask if you know about this tradition, but if you do, do tell me about it :)

They look so attractive. Would be nice to have such a tradition in my country. My little niece and nephew would be very happy to have one of these especially that cute pie you held.
I agree, you have to have a lot of self control to resist temptation.
I wish you could have it in your country too as many would be to get one.
Erika what a beauty of handmade things and the most interesting thing is how this first day of March has celebrated the beginning of spring in Romania. I don't know this tradition, it's the first time I see it. I am getting to know it through you, thank you very much, I will never forget it.
The cutie (doll) is a handmade cutie made with wool and crochet fabric, the magnet is very funny, I imagine the exchanges of this type of gift between friends and family.
I don't think I would have kept the purse, buying little things to give as gifts and for myself.
I don't think it's celebrated outside Europe and only in a few countries in Europe. And I can understand the temptation :D
I have never seen this spring celebration before, it is different than anything I have ever seen in my life. I told my mother who lives in the US and showed her through your link the beauty made art by the artists in your country. My mom is a plastic artist, she loves art in all its forms and shapes.
Happy spring 2023 Erika.
In Greece we also have the same tradition wearing it on the wrist for the whole month .
For the whole month? 😲 That is a long time, but it's nice to know you have the tradition in your country. The list is getting bigger :)
No such tradition here. I found the message on the magnet funny as well even though I don't drink no more :)
The person I bought the magnet doesn't drink either, but it was funny. Today I went back to buy another one, for a relative that likes to fish. The message on the magnet said fishing is not an easy job, but someone has to do it 😁. And there was no magnet left. The woman says the next fair she's coming will be in June or July ☹️
Haha good magnet :) I have a hat that says Master Baiter I don't wear often because it draws too much attention. I'll take a picture of it if you really want to see it
Lol, you don't like attention either 🙂
Thanks for the picture, I'll leave it to you, take one if it's not too much trouble.
Here it be I guess it's been so long I had to wipe off with was cloth because it was covered in dust, lol
Lol, than it was just about time to take it out 🙂.
Thanks for the photo.
Hehe I'll use as a display piece not wearing on my head. :) I would consider if there was a funny hat day.
I just heard of this tradition here on Hive, and wow this is so sweet! Hope we had this one too in our place.
I like that cutie pie and those beautiful flowerets.
It would be a good idea to have it there too, but I suppose you don't have spring, or do you?

Wow this is interesting. We do not have this tradition here in the Philippines, I guess. So nice to see these lovely cute little things during this event.
Most likely you have two seasons and don't have spring, right? Anyway, something similar would be good to have there :)
Yes we only have two seasons here. Thank you for sharing.
I never heard about this tradition before but I lived in USA and SE Asia for many years and got out of touch with Europe. Since I am back in Vienna my hometown I am more familiar again what is going on in my home continent.
This is so sweet!
I just couldn’t figure out where you are from? Where is that market?
In Rumania? What Town?
I'm from Romania and you can find this tradition everywhere in the country and some countries in Europe.
Thank you 🙏 Greetings via Vienna
Beautiful tradition.
It should be exported to Spain.
I love the markets with products made by artisans like the ones you show in the pictures.

This post really increased my knowledge, with ecency I am improving and getting knowledge about different cultures and traditions. Well, celebrations of spring really bring happiness
@erikah how cute the doll, I loved it. I also like to know about this tradition of the strings, Mărțișor.
I read some more on Internet. And it caught my attention that bathing in the rain when spring comes is in the first rain of March there, here it is in May. March is a beautiful month... haha it's my birthday month.
Thanks for sharing, amiga, it's a nice post.

Indeed, the dolls were really lovely.
I did a post about the Mărțișor. If you're interested, I can find the links :)
