Károly Csomafáy - Self-Portrait - 1934
I was looking at this painting and was thinking, if this is an self-portrait, where is the limit when the painter says, the painting is finished. Just as we're never satisfied with how we look, there's always something we don't like, I suppose painters, sculptures are the same, when it comes to their work, especially their self-portrait. Does this painting looks like the artist? Who knows, but the painting is nice, I love the texture and the colors.

This scene may look unusual to some, but it's still valid, it happens on a daily bases at thee countryside. The shepherd drives the cows to the pasture every morning and back at night.

András Bordi - Woman In Romanian National Dress - 1938
Those of you who are following me might remember, I had a post about folk costumes a few days ago. These folk costumes were considered festive clothes, therefore the woman is wearing hers on the portrait. Don't ask me which region is the costume from as have no idea.
Janka Olejnik - Balchic - Around 1930
Balchik is a Black Sea coastal town and seaside resort in the Southern Dobruja area of northeastern Bulgaria. It is in Dobrich Province, 35 km southeast of Dobrich and 42 km northeast of Varna. It sprawls scenically along hilly terraces descending from the Dobruja plateau to the sea, and is often called "The White City" because of its white hills. source
That was the market back then and you can see the well, people pumping water. Life was different back then.
Two different landscapes from the same year, by two different painters. The frames are very similar and all are of golden color. That s the trend. Imagine buying a painting like this, which is 90 years old or so and not liking the frame. What would you do? Change the frame. Would that man altering the value of the painting or the sentiment that comes with it? I could not decide, but I don't like these frames. I don't like gold, don't like the golden color.
Samu Börtsök - Hamlet In Winter
This was another favorite of mine, mostly for the simplicity ant the texture. You can see the texture of the canvas and the brush strokes. Would not be happy to live in such a house at a similar place though. This may not even be a house, maybe an industrial building.

This rough style is not exactly my favorite, but I can appreciate it.

Teodor Harșia - The Central Park In Cluj
This park still exists today, it looks different, but I'm not sure if you can do boat trips. Having a park with a lake in the city center is gold these days. This painting is testimony of the past.
Albert Nagy - The Son Of The Sea - 1966
Gáll Ferenc - My Friend From Paris - Around 1940
This one seemed a bit unusual. Having a better look at it now, I'm wondering if the frame is made of carved wood, or it is made using a mold. Seems wood though.
Jenő Maticska - Rome - 1905
This painting is 118 years old. I like the painting itself. I was wondering if the frame has a similar age, or not. In any case, the outer part of the frame takes away a lot of the painting's beauty. Would have been nice only the golden frame alone.
An exhibition like this for me is always like a walk in the past. There were nice pieces here, quite a few, but the frames ... I don't know what I would do with them. Good thing that question is hypothetical as I'm never going to own such an old painting. At least I don't think so.

118 years old, maybe I should create one so that my work can outlive myself.

You should create one and leave it to your kids, grandkids. Even if you don't have any talent, in 118 years life will be very different, so who knows 🤷 😉 😁

Well, all of them are great, but I like To the Pasture painting. It reminds me of my culture. Good for you you get the chance to witness those beautiful paintings. I hope I can one day.
I was thinking, at some parts of the world this type of shepherding is still happening. Some have to walk miles to get to the pasture. I also hope you can visit some galleries one day. Fingers crossed.

the self-portrait by Károly Csomafáy is very interesting. It's fascinating to think about how the artist saw himself, and how he chose to represent himself in the painting. The texture and colors are also very beautiful.
it's an interesting question to think about what you would do if you bought an old painting that you didn't like the frame of. Personally, I would probably try to find a way to change the frame without damaging the painting. I think it's important to be able to enjoy the painting as much as possible, and a frame that you don't like can really detract from the experience.
Changing the frame does not damage the painting if it's done by someone who knows how it's done. You're right, I would change the frame too as the painting is important not the frame, but the frame is there to add some value, so might as well be a nice one I like and think it's going to make the painting loom better.
