Holla readers, the year is almost over, it has been an epic year for me and my family as a culture during this time of the year, my family and i will go through our garden situated in our compound for harvest.
My elder brother didn't come home this time so I was empowered with the responsibility of the harvest, though I'm really good at it.
Plantain harvest is pretty simple but it does have some guidelines you need to follow before harvesting, consider this a self harvest method
Firstly before you think of harvesting a plantain you must bare in mind that it takes time for it to get ripe, so before cutting it down you must allow it to show signs of yellowish colour before plucking it.in our areas for instance.
We have challenges such as Monkeys which influences the numbers of days we allow the plantain to remain on the tree.
Secondly, after you have checked the plantain and you are sure it is ripe enough for harvest, you can then proceed to plucking it down, by slashing the attachment from the tree, it is a soft stem, it takes a minimum of a strike to cut it down
But while doing so, you must pay attention to the height of the tree because if you cut it down without holding it or bending down the tree, the plantain holder will fall flat on the ground and it will destroy the fruit. My advice is no matter how strong you are, instead of holding it, try bending down the tree which will make it a lot easier.
Thirdly, after plucking down the plantain, put it at a safe distance to avoid stepping on it, then you need to cut down the entire plantain tree to create space for the rest because it is of no use the moment you pluck the fruit
You must make sure you cut it from the buttom like a weed. plantain trees grows easily in few days the tree will be germinating again from the same spot.
Fourthly, since the major reason for our harvest is for consumption, there is need to separate the plantain fruit from the holder/curb.
The detachment is a very careful process to avoid slashing the plantain with a knife or cutlass. you take it line by line till it get to the last line
After all this, the harvest is done, you can now store it in which ever way you find applicable
But I will advice you store it in a cool dry place depending on how fast you want to consume it.
I can't wait to have a tasteπ₯° it has always been my most preferred dish, you are all welcome to join. feel free to drop your questions in the comment section about any of the process you don't understand.
Sha bring some for me when you coming back to Abeokuta. π€·π½ββοΈ
