Calm In The Raindrops.

Imagine you've had a long day at work or you're just generally really stressed out from the day's activities. At that point, nothing interests you more than getting home, having a warm refreshing shower to relieve the tensed muscles, having a nice meal, maybe your favorite one and finally getting a good sleep. Oh wait! There's actually more, you start hearing the taps on your rooftop, you can already feel the cool, fresh air sweeping in through your curtains. It's about to rain obviously, and you already know you're about to have one of the best nights of your life.

Okay, you can stop imagining now

We're talking about weathers. Basically there's only two of them over here in Nigeria. The rainy and the dry, we don't get the snowfalls but I wish we did, it'll be fun to know what it'll be like. That would be one of the reasons I'll go on a vacation someday. The rainy period stretches over a period of time from April to October. This is the time where the land is green because after all the months of dryness, the first rain brings a sense of relief and renewal. Personally, I love the smell of the first rain, I feel so happy knowing the dry season is finally over. It is at this time that farmers start planting their crops, so the rainy season is a period where we expect more food, different varieties of fruits, and fresh green vegetables.

You can tell from the introduction that the rainy period is my favorite, I love when it rains especially when I'm so stressed from the day's activities. Hearing the sound of rain on the rooftop when I'm about to sleep is my greatest therapy. Even if I'm having trouble sleeping and it starts to rain, I don't have trouble anymore because I'll just drift to sleep. Waking up the next morning to cool environment, seeing the beautiful dews that have been formed on the leaves gives me a soothing feeling. I get to pause and meditate a little about the thoughts I have deep within me, nothing can be more calming.

On the other hand, the dry weather is also very nice. I get the chance to go for my outdoor activities without having to carry an umbrella wherever I went to, or even raincoats, I've always hated them. Also, there is nothing more exciting than getting your laundry fresh and dry after washing them. This is the period when I enjoy having ice-cream the most and going to the parks for my recreational activities. However, there's this period of extreme dryness called the Harmattan and it has to be the worst time.

Not only does the air loses all it's moisture, making everywhere really dry, it also comes with intense sunshine all day long. The kind that can make you feel like your brain might burst under the heat. I can remember the heat wave we had last year, it was so difficult falling asleep every night because everywhere is really hot. It get worse because we don't even have a constant power supply to run the fans, it was just very terrible. Sometimes I have to stay out late, so that I can get enough fresh air outside to enable me fall asleep at least. Due to the lack of moisture in the air, it leaves people's skin very dry and ashy. You'll have to carry a lip balm everywhere you go to avoid getting cracked lips due to the dryness, it can be really painful to get cracked lips. Most times, you also have to add a small handy lotion in your bag, to keep your skin hydrated all the time or you'll end up looking like you came out of ashes.

The rainy season also has it's own challenges, especially as our roads are really bad. When it rains, the streets get flooded and it so much time before it dries up again. But, compared to the discomforts the dry season brings, this is just a minor inconvenience. Oh, did I forget to mention that you have to even to get blocked nostrils or even catarrh during the dry period. Well there you have it, I'll chose the rainy weather, anytime, any day. For the relief it brings and the therapeutic moments I relish.
