I was watching news of Meta's (former facebook) launch of their new Virtual Reality Headset which costs $1500 a piece. Meta swears it is building the Metaverse, and I give it prompts for taking steps (they even have the name to prove it). However, a pricey headset won't do much towards onboarding people in this metaverse, and the criticisms are valid.

First off, I have issues defining what the term Metaverse is, as do most people. Edicted has written about this in several articles and perhaps gives a clearer picture on what it should mean. Still, the basic premise is that the Metaverse is a place where internet connectivity is able to enhance and augment reality in a single connected space.

A lot of people take the term metaverse to mean one virtual reality headset or the other, but I think it goes a lot deeper than that. I believe it to be an internet enable domain where we can create our own reality and take better control of things like our experience, transactions and activity in one domain.

My own metaverse isn't to take us away from reality as many of these headsets appear. We are rather meant to thrive in multiple versions of our own reality through the activities we are able to perform in each of these domains. For instance a place like Hive has been able to connect things like gaming, banking, investing, content creation, social interaction, learning, etcetera, all in one tokenized domain.

We don't need a VR headset to perform on Hive, just a Hive account. Perhaps the developments in gaming will enable VR headsets on Hive in the future, but we are already functioning in my own simplistic vision of how a metaverse should operate as we are. Perhaps I shouldn't bother too much about the definition.

I just feel a technology that seeks to revolutionize the way our individual realities are felt should meet certain criteria or expectations. It should have obvious economic impact and must leverage on connectiveness to augment and not replace reality. What's more it must be accessible by ordinary persons if we really want it to work.

Conclusion

Whatever Universe it is that Hive is building is almost exactly what I envisage the future of technology to be. It isn't billions of dollars on fancy new headsets that may do more harm than good. It is rather a platform that improves the quality of life for our everyday people, myself included.
