Gratitude Sundays: Health Version
It turns out that when there isn't a whole lot going for me, the one thing that I remain very grateful for is great health. I've experienced solid health status for the majority of the times in my lifetime but I've also been on the recieving end of a complex health challenge before, and which experience I'd rather have on a regular basis is quite obvious to me.
One thing I've noticed about health issues is how it tends to put everything else into perspective. Nothing really matters beyond getting better, and all aspirations are temporarily suspended until there is a recovery. Understanding this mood is quite important when we face daily temptations to perform or see things turn out our way. In the end, we're all quite fragile and should we push ourselves beyond our elastic limits the body tends to push back.
That doesn't mean we shouldn't push at all. We're built for challenges after all, but there should be some awareness of our body's capacity in doing so. Whenever I push and my body pushes back I end up placing everything on hold while I focus on recovery. It is a lot easier to focus on productivity gains from a healthy state than when bothered with recovery.
Being grateful for health isn't something most healthy people practice on a regular basis. We tend to take for granted experiencing good health until we suddenly lose the ability to perform. It requires making a conscious effort to really put things into perspective. There are tons of people experiencing health challenges now who'd trade most material possessions just for the chance to be healthy again. As long as we're healthy, we have the capacity to turn whatever challenges we face.
