A Visit to the Old Magpie Mine
We called in at Magpie Mine which is an old disused lead mine in Derbyshire, England. I haven't been for a couple of years but it's always worth a visit.
We had to park on the side of the road and walk up to the mine. It was teeming it down with rain and it didn't look as though it was going to stop for a while so we had to bite the bullet.
The Cornish Engine House dates back from 1869, and the chimney was built in 1840.
It is free to just have a roam around the buildings and mining machinery. There's still a few mineshafts that are blocked off for safety reasons.
Higher up, was the Long Engine House. The flue was built to connect the chimney to the winding drum.
It was nice to see the place surrounded by lovely, yellow cowslips.
I think the rain made it more atmospheric. The mine is supposed to be haunted by the men who died in a fire that was started by miners from a neighbouring mine. We didn't see anything untoward though! It was an interesting visit. I'm pleased they have restored parts of the mine with a lottery grant. Source

Historical place well worth a visit. Those people in the old days never thought things would’ve changed so much.
They had a lot to put up with. Glad we've got wifi now! 😁
