A Visit to Robin Hood's Hideout - The Major Oak in Nottinghamshire
We revisited Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire to walk the Major Oak trail. Legend has it that the famous outlaw, Robin Hood, his band of Merry Men and Maid Marion used the Major Oak for shelter and to hide from the Sheriff of Nottingham!
The Magor Oak is roughly between 800 to 1100 years.
When I was young, we could actually play inside the tree but the trees roots have been damaged by the constant footsteps of visitors, so since the 1970s the tree has been fenced off.
Chains, supports and metal structures are also used to give much needed support to the tree. After looking at the tree for awhile, we continued on the trail.
There were information signs and quizzes along the route.
Unfortunately, we didn’t get to visit the church this time.
Before going home we called in at the Visitor's Centre where you can find out all about the legend of Robin Hood and the various walks throughout the forest. It was a lovely place for a nice flat walk with a bit of history thrown in.
How cool is that tree - nice one !

Yes, very cool! Thank you. 😊
gosh it's absolutely mondboggling and spinechilling to think how old those trees are! Thank you so much for sharing. This is certainly one of my favourite legends.
I'm glad something is older than me. 😄
That oak is amazing!!! So glad I found this post, so I could visit Shirwood Forest with you. :)
I've spent a good deal of time in New Orleans, and the Live Oaks in that area are magical. There's another giant one I've visited in South Carolina, as well. Anywhere there are old trees, awe awaits.
Here's a picture of me in one of my favorite oak trees...
They're wonderful aren't they? I used to climb trees in my youth but my body would protest too much now. 😅
