Esta serie la había visto unos meses atrás, y me pareció una de las cosas más tiernas. La volví a ver para motivos de esta reseña, y sigo afirmando que cada episodio es precioso💜

Heartstopper nació como un cómic de Alice Oseman, y debido a la fama que obtuvo en 2018 se publicó el primer libro de la historia, actualmente hay cuatro libros. La trama se centra en el romance entre dos chicos adolescentes, los cuáles poco a poco van explorando quiénes son. Y, siendo sinceros, en esta época es algo muy normal, pero la manera en que abordan el tema es encantador, totalmente diferente a cualquier otra relación LGBT que encontramos en la televisión. ¡Así que comencemos!✨

I had watched this series a few months back, and I thought it was one of the cutest things. I rewatched it again for the purposes of this review, and I still affirm that every episode is precious💜

Heartstopper was born as a comic book by Alice Oseman, and due to the fame it gained in 2018 the first book of the story was published, currently there are four books. The plot focuses on the romance between two teenage boys, which gradually explore who they are. And, being honest, in this day and age it's a very normal thing, but the way they approach the subject is charming, totally different from any other LGBT relationship we find on TV. So let's get started!✨

Ya se había convertido en una mala costumbre ver parejas de homosexuales con una historia llena de dramas, caóticas, o solo como un complemento para los protagonistas, y Netflix nos ha dado bastante material así. O simplemente historias con un montón de actores adultos actuando como adolescentes en crisis, en dónde se hace difícil conectar con la trama. Y aquí es donde llega Heartstopper a iluminar nuestras vidas✨

En resumen, tenemos a Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) un adolescente británico abiertamente gay que estudia en una escuela para hombres. No ha llevado una vida fácil. Pero un día conoce a Nick Nelson (Kit Connor) en una clase, un jugador del equipo de rugby, y con un "Hola" y una sonrisa comienza esta hermosa historia. Desde el momento en que se conocen se vuelven inseparables; a pesar de sus diferencias se convierten en grandes amigos. Sin embargo, con el paso del tiempo aparecen sentimientos más profundos que una simple amistad. Son chicos inocentes y dulces. Charlie conoce un interés romántico que finalmente lo acepta tal como es, y Nick comienza a conocerse a sí mismo.

No vean Heartstopper esperando la típica historia adolescente, que muchas veces son tan superficiales. La historia es original, profunda, real, y puedes conectar desde el primer capítulo. No hay dramas innecesarios, hipersexualización, ni clichés tontos, lo grandioso de esta serie es su naturalidad, te hace sentir bien y cómodo, y te crea la necesidad de no parar hasta llegar al último capítulo.

It had already become a bad habit to see gay couples with a story full of drama, chaotic, or just as a complement to the protagonists, and Netflix has given us plenty of material like that. Or simply stories with a bunch of adult actors acting as teenagers in crisis, where it becomes difficult to connect with the plot. And this is where Heartstopper comes to enlighten our lives✨

In short, we have Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) an openly gay British teenager who attends an all-boys school. He hasn't had an easy life. But one day he meets Nick Nelson (Kit Connor) in a class, a player on the rugby team, and with a "Hi" and a smile this beautiful story begins. From the moment they meet they become inseparable; despite their differences they become great friends. However, as time goes by, deeper feelings than a simple friendship appear. They are innocent and sweet boys. Charlie meets a romantic interest who finally accepts him as he is, and Nick begins to know himself.

Don't watch Heartstopper expecting the typical teenage story, which are often so shallow. The story is original, deep, real, and you can connect from the first chapter. There are no unnecessary dramas, hypersexualization, or silly clichés, the great thing about this series is its naturalness, it makes you feel good and comfortable, and creates the need to not stop until you get to the last chapter.

Y me dirán: "seguro es una historia cursi y empalagosa". Pero no. Se los digo yo, alguien que no le gustan las películas/series tan empalagosas. El romance que nos presenta Heartstopper está lleno de amabilidad, respeto, confianza y honestidad. No se siente como algo tonto, al contrario, te acelera el corazón, y te hace desear tener lo que ellos tienen.

Primero, el respeto y amabilidad💜 Aunque Charlie está muy seguro de quién es, Nick no lo está, esta relación es algo nuevo para él, pero Charlie lo comprende y respeta su proceso. No lo presiona en ningún momento. Y no es una situación fácil, es una persona que está cuestionando sus intereses, que está descubriendo partes que desconocía de sí mismo, no hay un tiempo límite para este proceso; pero Charlie está ahí, lo acompaña y lo apoya, incluso cuando fue decepcionado anteriormente por otro chico que no se aceptaba así mismo. Charlie pudo haberle dicho no aceptaría esa situación, y lo hubiéramos comprendido, pero decidió apoyarlo.

And you will say to me: "sure it's a cheesy and cloying story". But no. I'm telling you, someone who doesn't like such cloying movies/series. The romance Heartstopper presents us with is full of kindness, respect, trust, and honesty. It doesn't feel silly, on the contrary, it makes your heart race, and makes you wish you had what they have.

First, respect and kindness💜 Although Charlie is very sure of who he is, Nick is not, this relationship is something new to him, but Charlie understands and respects his process. He doesn't push him at any point. And it is not an easy situation, he is a person who is questioning his interests, who is discovering parts he didn't know about himself, there is no time limit for this process; but Charlie is there, he accompanies him and supports him, even when he was disappointed before by another guy who didn't accept himself. Charlie could have told him he would not accept that situation, and we would have understood, but he decided to support him.

Segundo, ¡la honestidad!💗 En toda relación es sumamente importante la comunicación, es la clave de todo, incluso cuando son cosas incómodas o molestas, siempre es importante comunicarnos. Si Charlie y Nick discutían, al día siguiente estaban comentando lo que les había molestado. Nick se preocupaba por los sentimientos de Charlie, y siempre le preguntaba cómo se sentía. Y Charlie, por su parte, era muy honesto acerca de quién era, él no se ocultaba.

Second, honesty! 💗 In any relationship, communication is extremely important, it's the key to everything, even when it's uncomfortable or upsetting things, it's always important to communicate. If Charlie and Nick argued, the next day they were commenting on what had upset them. Nick was concerned about Charlie's feelings, and always asked him how he was feeling. And Charlie, for his part, was very honest about who he was, he didn't hide.

Also, confidence plays a very important role, both in themselves and with each other💙 They are two teenagers, they have insecurities and fears, they feel misunderstood and inadequate, and it's normal!!!. They don't try to be someone different, and they struggle with their insecurities as a teenager would. We see Charlie feeling invisible and worthless, and Nick unsure of himself, and in their relationship they each find the strength to move forward.

Hay muchas historias de "romance" por allí, ¿y cuántas idealizan un amor tóxico y disfuncional? Lamentablemente, la mayoría de ellas. Por alguna razón, los romances tóxicos tienen gran publicidad. Pero Heartstopper es un gran contraste.

El romance que encontramos no tiene ni una pizca de toxicidad, ojalá más adolescentes vieran esta serie y deseen conocer una pareja así. Charlie y Nick actúan igual de torpe como muchos de nosotros cuando alguien nos gusta, y tienen ese mismo temor de no ser aceptados. No buscan ser "perfectos", ni se alimentan del drama y la tragedia, son muy naturales.

En Heartstopper hay espacio para todos, y te hace entender que las diferencias no importan, lo realmente valioso es sentirte bien con quién eres. Por ejemplo, Nick al principio se siente confundido con sus sentimientos y Charlie lo comprende, e incluso para darle un beso Charlie siempre le pregunta a Nick si puede besarlo, y espera que él le dé su aprobación para hacerlo.

There are a lot of "romance" stories out there, and how many romanticize a toxic, dysfunctional love? Sadly, most of them do. For some reason, toxic romances get great publicity. But Heartstopper is a stark contrast.

The romance we find doesn't have a hint of toxicity, I wish more teens would watch this series and wish they knew a couple like that. Charlie and Nick act just as awkward as many of us do when we like someone, and they have that same fear of not being accepted. They don't seek to be "perfect", nor do they feed off drama and tragedy, they are very natural.

In Heartstopper there is room for everyone, and it makes you understand that differences don't matter, what's really valuable is feeling good about who you are. For example, Nick at first is confused about his feelings and Charlie understands him; even, to give him a kiss Charlie always asks Nick if he can kiss him, and waits for him to give his approval to do so.

Además, hay otras historias de amor complementarias que mantienen el respeto y apoyo. Encontramos a Tara y Darcy, dos chicas que mantienen su amor en secreto por temor a cómo pueden tratarlas otras personas, y sin embargo, son la mayor motivación de Nick para expresar sus emociones. Realmente son las primeras personas con quiénes Nick habla de todo el enredo que siente en su cabeza y su corazón, pero verlas juntas y felices lo ayuda a comprender su situación.

In addition, there are other complementary love stories that maintain respect and support. We meet Tara and Darcy, two girls who keep their love a secret for fear of how other people might treat them, yet they are Nick's greatest motivation to express his emotions. They are really the first people Nick talks to about all the mess he feels in his head and heart, but seeing them together and happy helps him understand his situation.

And then there's Tao and Elle, Charlie's friends. At first I had several conflicts with Tao's personality, but then I realized that her friendships were changing pretty quickly, and she was just having trouble processing and adapting to those changes. On the other hand, Elle is a transgender girl, who recently switched to the neighboring all-girls school, due to her transition. The two of them adore each other, we all know that, it just takes them to accept that they love each other🤭

Realmente no entiendo porqué las historias actuales que incluyen parejas homosexuales o bisexuales siempre la llevan hacía un camino sexualizado. Es una manera muy fracasada de intentar ser "inclusivos", dado que solo están logrando crear un estereotipo.

Lo que hace tan lindo a Heartstopper es que es una serie para todo el público, perfecta para que esos adolescentes que se sienten confundidos puedan encontrar un poco de orientación adecuada. Se expresan temas acerca del descubrimiento de la sexualidad, las transiciones de género, y los prejuicios sobre esta comunidad, incluso sobre prejuicios hacia la masculinidad, demostrando que no necesitas caer en lo morboso para explicar estos temas.

Heartstopper demuestra lo qué es la verdadera inclusión, que las personas de la comunidad LGBT son similares a cualquier otra. Y que sus relaciones no tienen porqué ser tóxicas y dramáticas. Algo adicional, y que quizás fue muy "perfecto", fue el apoyo de los padres de Charlie y Nick. Sabemos que es el escenario perfecto porque tristemente abundan los casos de adolescentes homosexuales que no son aceptados por sus familias, pero fue hermoso ver lo que un padre debería hacer: amar a su hijo tal como es.

I really don't understand why current stories that include homosexual or bisexual couples always take it down a sexualized path. It's a very failed way of trying to be "inclusive", they're only succeeding in creating a very bad stereotype.

What makes Heartstopper so cute is that it's a series for all audiences, perfect for those confused teens to find some proper guidance. It expresses themes about discovering sexuality, gender transitions, and prejudices about this community, even about prejudices towards masculinity, showing that you don't need to fall into the morbid to explain these issues.

Heartstopper demonstrates what true inclusion is, that people in the LGBT community are just like everyone else. And that their relationships don't have to be toxic and dramatic. Something additional, and that was perhaps very "perfect", was the support of Charlie and Nick's parents. We know it's the perfect scenario because sadly there are so many cases of gay teens who are not accepted by their families, but it was beautiful to see what a parent should do: love their child as they are.

Alice Oseman es la creadora de toda esta historia, pero no solo del libro, sino que también estuvo muy presente en la adaptación de Netflix. Ella participó en la dirección, producción y el guión de la serie. Además, fue la encargada de lo más importante: la selección del elenco. Cada actor fue increíblemente maravilloso en su papel. Joe Locke transmite esa vibra de inocencia y dulzura de Charlie, y Kit Connor da esa aura de Golden Retriever de Nick. Por cierto, es mi momento de decir que Nick Nelson es, sin duda, mi personaje favorito✨

El personaje de Elle es interpretado por la actriz transgénero Yasmin Finney, quién es perfecta para su papel. Siento que su propia experiencia le permite desarrollar el papel de Elle de la mejor manera. Mientras que Tao, interpretado por William Gao, rompe los estereotipos de la masculinidad, un chico heterosexual que no teme de la opinión de otros para mostrar sus intereses. Oseman se encargó de encontrar el elenco perfecto que contara la historia de sus personajes, y para mí, eso fue uno de los mayores puntos a favor, porque la actuación fue impecable.

Una de mis tantas escenas favoritas es cuando Nick comienza a sospechar que gusta de Charlie, y por ende, cae en un abismo de confusión y ve su mundo voltearse por completo. ¿Y qué hace? Investiga en Google🤭 una conducta muy normal en los adolescente de ahora, e incluso hace un Quizz y ve videos de Youtubers. Kit Connor hizo un trabajo excelente, sentí la desesperación, la confusión, el shock del personaje al descubrir qué es la bisexualidad, que estaba bien sentirse atraído por chicas y chicos. Él lloró a descubrir esa parte de él, y yo lloré con él.

Alice Oseman is the creator of this whole story, but not only of the book, she was also very present in the Netflix adaptation. She participated in the direction, production and script of the series. She was also in charge of the most important thing: the cast selection. Each actor was incredibly wonderful in their role. Joe Locke gives off that innocent and sweet vibe of Charlie, and Kit Connor gives that Golden Retriever aura of Nick. By the way, it's my time to say that Nick Nelson is hands down my favorite character✨

The character of Elle is played by transgender actress Yasmin Finney, who is perfect for her role. I feel that her own experience allows her to develop the role of Elle in the best way. While Tao, played by William Gao, breaks the stereotypes of masculinity, a straight guy who is not afraid of the opinion of others to show his interests. Oseman took care to find the perfect cast to tell the story of his characters, and for me, that was one of the biggest plus points, because the acting was impeccable.

One of my many favorite scenes is when Nick begins to suspect that he likes Charlie, and therefore, falls into an abyss of confusion and sees his world turn completely upside down. And what does he do? He does some research on Google🤭 a very normal behavior in teenagers nowadays, and he even does a Quizz and watches Youtubers videos. Kit Connor did an excellent job, I felt the desperation, the confusion, the shock of the character discovering what bisexuality is, that it was okay to be attracted to girls and boys. He cried to discover that part of him, and I cried with him.

Por último, la estética de la serie es HERMOSA✨ Por alguna razón, los colores amarillo y azul parecen representar a los protagonistas, por eso están en todos lados. La gama de colores permite dar enfasis en el mensaje de las escenas, cuando hay un momento tenso todo es tenue, frío y oscuro, pero en los momentos de alegría la pantalla se llena de color. Por ejemplo, Nick se da cuenta de sus sentimientos hacía Charlie en una fiesta, justo en la pista de baile cuando ve a otra pareja besándose, y en ese momento vemos como los colores del lugar casualmente se transforma en el arcoiris tan reconocido de la bandera LGBT. ¿Se siente forzado? La verdad es que no, hasta puede pasar desapercibido si no estás pendiente, pero yo sí me dí cuenta y me encantó.

También vemos dibujos (como en el cómic) de hojas y flores volar entre las escenas, chispas de electricidad o corazones latiendo cuando los personajes están juntos. Nubes grises para los pensamiento catastróficos, y niebla rosada para los pensamiento románticos y soñadores. ¿Es cursi? Puede que sí lo sea un poco, pero son detalles hermosos, le da un toque diferente y especial a esos momentos específicos y relevantes.

Es lindo ¡porque así se siente! Que levante la mano quién siente chispas cuando toca a la persona que le gusta, o mariposas en el estómago con solo verla. Todos lo hacemos🤭 Esos pequeños detalles te hace amar cada momento.

Finally, the aesthetics of the series is BEAUTIFUL✨ For some reason, the colors yellow and blue seem to represent the protagonists, that's why they are everywhere. The range of colors allows to emphasize the message of the scenes, when there is a tense moment everything is subdued, cold and dark, but in the moments of joy the screen is filled with color. For example, Nick realizes his feelings for Charlie at a party, right on the dance floor when he sees another couple kissing, and at that moment we see how the colors of the place casually transform into the rainbow so recognized of the LGBT flag. Does it feel forced? Not really, it might even go unnoticed if you're not paying attention, but I noticed it and I loved it.

We also see drawings (as in the comic) of leaves and flowers flying between the scenes, sparks of electricity or beating hearts when the characters are together. Gray clouds for the catastrophic thoughts, and pink mist for the romantic and dreamy thoughts. Is it cheesy? Maybe it is a bit, but they are beautiful details, it gives a different and special touch to those specific and relevant moments.

It's cute because that's how it feels! Raise your hand who feels sparks when you touch the person you like, or butterflies in your stomach just by looking at them. We all do🤭 Those little details make you love every moment.
