🌺El Calvario, Caracas, Venezuela ✨☘️

A few days ago I had the opportunity to get to know a place that was on my (long) list for quite some time, every time I visited Caracas I planned to visit it, but due to things in life my plans ended up changing. However, I finally made it ✨ and started my 2024 on the right foot, literally.

In the center of our capital, between the chaos of cars in the middle of the avenue and people doing their shopping, we can find El Calvario, a small space of nature surrounded by a big city. Regardless of the mess of Gran Caracas, once you find yourself at the top of El Calvario all that noise turns off, and you can enjoy beautiful views in peace. And here I explain you all about the tour of this place✨

Hace unos pocos días tuve la oportunidad de conocer un lugar que estuvo en mi (larga) lista por bastante tiempo, cada vez que visitaba Caracas planeaba visitarlo, pero por cosas de la vida mis planes terminaban cambiando. Sin embargo, finalmente lo logré ✨ y comencé mi 2024 con buen pie, literalmente.

En el centro de nuestra capital, entre el caos de los carros en plena avenida y las personas haciendo sus compras, podemos encontrar El Calvario, un pequeño espacio de naturaleza rodeado por una gran ciudad. Sin importar el desorden de la Gran Caracas una vez que te encuentras en la cima de El Calvario todo ese ruido se apaga, y puedes disfrutar de hermosas vistas en paz. Y aquí te explico todo sobre el recorrido de este lugar✨

El Calvario or Parque Ezequiel Zamora has different entrances, you can enter through the surrounding neighborhoods, or through its most famous entrance: the gigantic staircase of almost 100 steps. You may see the top very high and difficult to reach, but when you are at the top the view is worth it; the privilege of being in the center of Caracas and see from the heights how the scenery unfolds. Plus, the satisfaction that you made it is unparalleled.

El Calvario o Parque Ezequiel Zamora tiene distintas entradas, puedes entrar a través de los barrios que están alrededor, o por su más famosa entrada: la gigantesca escalera de casi 100 escalones. Puede que veas la cima muy alta y difícil de alcanzar, pero cuando estás arriba la vista vale la pena; el privilegio de estar en el centro de Caracas y ver desde las alturas cómo se desenvuelve ese escenario. Además, la satisfacción de que lo lograste, no tiene comparación.

Obviously we walked between those steps because it is clearly a requirement of the place, but the truth is that we did not enter this way. A few blocks ahead is a small parking lot, and this entrance is guarded by the imposing Federation Arch, which, if I'm not mistaken, is to commemorate the Federal War. It's really beautiful, and gives you the feeling that you're entering a special place.

Obviamente caminamos entre esos escalones porque claramente es un requisito del lugar, pero la verdad es que no entramos por acá. Unas cuadras más adelante se encuentra un pequeño estacionamiento, y esta entrada está custodiada por el imponente Arco de la Federación, y el cuál, si no me equivoco, es para conmemorar la Guerra Federal. Es realmente hermoso, y te da la sensación de estar entrando a un lugar especial.

Whether you enter by climbing the famous staircase, or going through the archway, from there the path is straight and easy to traverse, surrounded by trees on both sides, and from time to time, presenting little glimpses of the city. But, even though they are easy to walk, that you can ride a bike, skate, take cars, etc, it's a long way to the top, especially if like us you stop at every point to take pictures🤭.

Ya sea que entres subiendo la famosa escalera, o atravesando el arco, a partir de allí el camino es recto y fácil de atravesar, rodeado de árboles por ambos lados, y de vez en cuando, presentando pequeños vistazos de la ciudad. Pero, aunque sean fáciles de caminar, de que puedes ir en bicicleta, patines, llevar coches, etc, es un camino largo hasta la cima, especialmente si como nosotros te detienes en cada punto para tomar fotografías🤭

This park was built during the presidency of Antonio Guzmán Blanco, so it is a place with a lot of history. Previously it was in a state of disrepair, and was considered a place where crime reigned, for that reason caraqueños avoided it for any reason.

However, since a few years ago, it was recovered, for the tourist good of the city and the peace of its citizens. Now you can find police points in different areas of the park, the small squares, gardens and any other details you find along the way are in good condition, and you meet many people during the walk. A place that used to be avoided by everyone is now a beautiful meeting place.

Este parque fue construido durante la presidencia de Antonio Guzmán Blanco, así que es un lugar con bastante historia. Anteriormente se encontraba en estado de deterioro, y era considerado un lugar donde reinaba la delicuencia, por esa razón los caraqueños lo evitaban por cualquier motivo.

No obstante, desde hace algunos años, fue recuperado, por el bien turístico de la ciudad y la paz de sus ciudadanos. Ahora puedes encontrar puntos policiales en distintas zonas del parque, las pequeñas plazas, jardines y cualquier otro detalle que encuentras en el camino están en buen estado, y te encuentras a muchas personas durante el paseo. Un lugar que antes era evitado por todos, ahora es un bello lugar de encuentro.

One of the things I loved the most about El Calvario was its decoration, the sensation it makes you feel when you see every detail; for a moment you forget that you're in Caracas, you feel like you're in a different place. This is due to the European style with which it was built.

For example, El Parnaso square, the structure of its gardens reminds you of those Parisian gardens you see in pictures on the internet (or at least that's what happened to me). Although you don't only find this French influence, you can really detect a mix of different styles of ancient architecture, which helps to make it a place where you can relax and forget for a moment the stress of a big city.

Una de las cosas que más me encantó de El Calvario fue su decoración, la sensación que te hace sentir al ver cada detalle; por un momento olvidas que te encuentras en Caracas, sientes que estás en un lugar diferente. Esto se debe por el estilo europeo con el que fue construido.

Por ejemplo, la plaza El Parnaso, la estructura de sus jardines te recuerda a esos jardines parisinos que ves en fotos por internet (o al menos eso me sucedió a mí). Aunque no solo te encuentras con esta influencia francesa, realmente puedes detectar una mezcla de diferentes estilos de la arquitectura antigua, lo que ayuda a que sea un lugar donde te puedas relajar y olvidar por un momento el estrés de una gran ciudad.

After crossing the garden of the previous photos, you will see in the distance the walls of a chapel: The Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes. A very pretty little church, which on the outside is well cared for and renovated, but harbors a tragic history inside, for this reason its doors are completely sealed to the public.

There are different stories of what happened inside these walls, with the passage of time may have been distorted the truth, so I invite you to investigate. But the basis of the theories is a tragic story about its bishop, a man who due to the consequences of his actions, ended his life hanging in the dome of this small chapel. You can already imagine the popular beliefs about this event: his spirit still wanders in this world, strange sounds are heard coming from the place, even that the site has been used by satanic sects for anything but benevolent purposes.

Después de cruzar el jardín de las fotos anteriores, verás a los lejos las paredes de una capilla: La Capilla de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes. Una pequeña iglesia muy linda, que en su exterior está cuidada y renovada, pero alberga una trágica historia en su interior, por esta razón sus puertas están completamente selladas al público.

Existen distintas historias de lo que sucedió dentro de esas paredes, con el paso del tiempo puede que se haya tergiversado la verdad, así que te invito a investigar. Pero la base de las teorías es una historia trágica acerca de su obispo, un hombre que debido a las consecuencias de sus actos, acabo con su vida ahorcando en la cúpula de esta pequeña capilla. Ya puedes imaginar la creencias populares sobre este suceso: su espíritu aún vaga en este mundo, se escuchan sonidos extraños provenientes del lugar, incluso que el sitio ha sido usado por sectas satánicas con fines para nada benevolentes.

Anyway, I couldn't leave without knocking on the door and looking through the cracks, but no, I didn't see or hear anything strange... maybe it was too early in the day.

En fin, no podía irme sin tocar la puerta y mirar por las rendijas, pero no, no ví ni escuché nada extraño... quizás era muy temprano en el día.

If you continue uphill, you come across an attractive coffee shop, called: Algo Andino✨

On the way up we only passed by one side, but when we came back we stopped for a moment here, to rest (it's quite a long way uphill) and have a drink. Some ordered coffees, but most of us ordered chocolate merengadas, quite cold to recover energies, we also ordered two portions of Andean arepitas with cream, just because 🤭 and really everything was delicious, and the customer service was very nice, as it should be.

It's a place located outdoors, on a terrace, with beautiful views. And for my taste, all over the park you find cats🥺😍 I don't know if you know it, but I love these animals; there were of all colors, of all sizes, and I even saw a mother cat with her little kitten. Some were a little afraid of people, some did let themselves be touched, but most were cared for. And I feel that in that place they can be at ease.

Si continúas subiendo, te encuentras con una atractiva cafetería, llamada: Algo Andino.✨

Al subir solo pasamos por un lado, pero cuando regresamos nos detuvimos un momento acá, para descansar (es un camino bastante largo cuesta arriba) y tomar algo. Algunos pidieron cafés, pero la mayoría pedimos merengadas de chocolate, bastante frías para recuperar energías, también pedimos dos raciones de arepitas andinas con nata, porque sí 🤭 y realmente todo estaba delicioso, y el servicio al cliente fue muy agradable, como debe ser.

Es un lugar ubicado al aire libre, en una terraza, con hermosas vistas. Y para mí gusto, en todo el parque encuentras gatos🥺😍 no sé si lo sabían, pero yo amo estos animales; habían de todos los colores, de todos los tamaños, e incluso ví una gata mamá con su gatito pequeño. Algunos tenían un poco de miedo de las personas, otros sí se dejaron tocar, pero la mayoría estaban cuidados. Y siento que en ese lugar pueden estar tranquilos.

After the cafeteria, you continue climbing, and you are already in the final part of the tour, with the real views you were looking for. See Caracas from the center and above all. On one side you see Miraflores, the subway tracks, on the other side are the towers of Silencio, and much more. And despite being the center of the city, being there everything is quiet, there were families together, children playing in the park, young people exercising, people walking their pets, everyone was quiet in their activities.

Up there is a large plaza, which you reach its center through a labyrinth style staircase, dedicated to the image of Simon Bolivar. And on the other side, continuing with that European style, you get El Gazebo, one of the places that I loved the most, and made me want to celebrate my wedding (if I ever get to that point) in a place like that, so elegant and classic, romantic and fresh, surrounded by nature.

Después de la cafetería, continúas subiendo, y ya te encuentras en la parte final del recorrido, con las verdaderas vistas que estabas buscando. Ver a Caracas desde su centro y por encima de todo. Por un lado ves a Miraflores, las vías del metro, por otro lado están las torres del Silencio, y muchas cosas más. Y a pesar de ser el centro de la ciudad, estando allí todo es tranquilo, habían familias reunidas, niños jugando en el parque, jóvenes haciendo ejercicios, personas paseando a sus mascotas, todos estaban tranquilos en sus actividades.

Allí arriba se encuentra una plaza grande, a la cuál llegas a su centro por medio de una escalinata con estilo de laberinto, dedicada a la imagen de Simón Bolivar. Y por otro lado, continuando con ese estilo europeo, consigues El Gazebo, uno de los lugares que más me encantó, y me hizo desear celebrar mi boda (si alguna vez llego a ese punto) en un lugar como ese, tan elegante y clásico, romántico y fresco, rodeado por la naturaleza.

Also, along the way you will find other small squares, where sculptures of recognized and important names of our Venezuelan history are displayed.

And as evidence that it is an important place in the city, that you can not miss, I can tell you that when we returned we met foreign tourists on the way, which according to our deductions were doing a package tour, since they all wore similar bracelets. So, if people from other countries are interested in visiting El Calvario, why not us?

También, durante el camino te vas a encontrar con otras pequeñas plazas, dónde se muestran esculturas de nombres reconocidos e importantes de nuestra historia venezolana.

Y como evidencia de que es un lugar importante en la ciudad, que no puedes dejar de visitar, puedo contarles que cuando regresamos nos encontramos en el camino con turistas extranjeros, los cuales según nuestra deducciones estaban haciendo un paquete turístico, dado que todos llevaban brazaletes similares. Así que, si a personas de otros países, les interesa conocer El Calvario, ¿por qué a nosotros no?

It's definitely worth taking a few hours out of your day to climb to the top of El Calvario, whether you live in Caracas or are visiting the city, this place deserves to be recognized by everyone.

My own parents, born and raised in Caracas, admitted that they had not visited the place, because yes, in their times to get here was to look for a great danger, but it's not like that anymore. Obviously you have to take the necessary precautions, because it's Caracas, but it's nothing compared to how it used to be.

It was also a nostalgic moment for me, because very close is the neighborhood where I was born, where my family lived more than 20 years ago, and being there, admiring from that point the city where I was born, made me connect with my roots, with my family, and even with myself. So I really hope that at some point you can visit this place✨💖 And obviously, I hope I can keep crossing off places I want to know from my long list.

Sin duda alguna vale la pena tomarse algunas horas de tu día y subir hasta la cima de El Calvario, ya sea que vivas en Caracas o que estés visitando la ciudad, este lugar merece ser reconocido por todos.

Mis propios padres, nacidos y criados en Caracas admitieron que no habían visitado el lugar, porque sí, en sus tiempos llegar hasta acá era buscar un gran peligro, pero ya no es así. Obviamente hay que tomar las precauciones necesarias, porque es Caracas, pero no es nada comparado a como era antes.

También fue un momento nostálgico para mí, porque muy cerca se encuentra el barrio donde yo nací, dónde mi familia vivió hace más de 20 años, y estar allí, admirar desde ese punto la ciudad que me vió nacer, me hizo conectar con mis raíces, con mi familia, y hasta conmigo misma. Así que realmente espero que en algún momento puedan visitar este lugar✨💖 Y obviamente, espero poder seguir tachando lugares que quiero conocer de mi larga lista.
