Start a New Year by Playing Black and White at Pasie Rawa Beach

Photography today is no longer just a design work, but also a work of art. Why? Photography can move reality and become a representation and abstraction of reality, so even a photographer can express changes and break reality. Indonesia in general and Aceh in particular is a paradise of natural scenery that is endlessly explored. A lot of natural scenery is not necessarily explored as a pseudo object, but many human activities and objects in it are lifted into the photo frame. Indeed, photography is not only a way of expressing the soul but also an opportunity for the world to get a closer look at Indonesia.

It can be said that taking pictures is an active expression. It is not just that a photographer records a moment in an image, but rather that a photographer interprets himself through the photograph. There are photographers who deliberately explore the beauty of nature with the aim of attracting investment. Several individuals protest excessive exploration of nature, while others view human photography as a manifestation of social inequality and demonstrate ethical behavior in photographs of students and teachers. For a photographer, taking pictures is a form of dialogue between himself and the world. From the picture, he seems to be conveying a message about the changes in human behavior through the picture.

After having held a camera and been taught by myself without trying to increase my knowledge of photography, I have learned an extremely valuable thing: photography's essence combines two components: it fills the psychological needs of its creator and viewer, and it has a lot of meaning and value as a medium. Who knows the essence of a photo better than the one who took it? Who enjoys a photo more than the eyes of the viewer? It is true that one photo has a thousand meanings. Therefore, from that, we know that no matter how many colors are displayed or how black and white the photo is, you can correlate it as you want.

This morning, my children, the beach, and life there became the object. I tried to understand my son from how he walked, played, and recorded his activities on the beach. There were also fishermen fishing using traditional boats, working together to push the boat to the shore for repair, and doing other activities on the beach. I tried to always use black and white to convey a specific purpose. This was to minimize color, emphasize objects, explore lines and shapes, dramatize impressions and distort nature into a new atmosphere.

Finally, I understood why my son was so upset because he had to enter the dormitory soon and his vacation was over. On the other hand, my daughter is very happy because she has many stories she can share via social media about fishermen facing the ocean with tenacity, and not forgetting to help one another in the same line of work. In some cases, color elements in black-and-white photos can be distracting due to deterioration and ongoing color developments. Therefore, black-and-white photos can always be shown and saved. Again, I think that black and white photos have simple subjects and compositions, which are stronger and more imprinted on the mind of whoever sees them. Moreover, it has a strong sense of art.

It is the beginning of 2023, and there are so many objects that have yet to be presented on social media. So I began by taking black and white photos on the beach. I wanted to demonstrate that there are no 'wrong' colors due to the influence of the temperature of the light source. In short, if one looks at black-and-white photography, one is focused and not easily distracted by colors. Visible shapes and lines, combinations of shapes, and gradations in black and white will build an imagination that feels more dramatic and has a stronger message than color.
