Splinterlands - Winning my 1st tournament ever!

Today I received one of the best news since I started playing Splinterlands 😍. I won the Brazilian Tournament hosted by @hivebr.spt and @marianaemilia, which it was a very cool initiative to build up the brazilian community and they did a very nice job in the organization 👏.

I was a little bit surprised with the results, because in the 1st Tournament (out of 4) I didn’t notice that there was a round 2 and I fled all my battles 😢.

About the format: in total was 4 tournaments (1 per week starting every Saturday) with multiple rounds and each of them the top 40% advanced to round 2 to play at least once against each other. In the end of each tournament players scored points depending on their position, for example: 1st place 4 points, 2nd place – 3 points and so on.
What I liked the most of the format was the possibility to submit my battles anytime in a 24 hours window allowing more players to join.

So, I decided to share in this post some of the battles I find interesting with some insights and strategy tips. However, I’d like to mention that I’m not an expert/pro, just a player that likes to study and analyse the setups considering the rule set + mana cap, so don' take these tips as an absolut truth since there is no such thing in Splinterlands.

Hoje recebi uma das melhores notícias desde que comecei a jogar Splinterlands 😍: venci o Torneio Brasileiro de Splinterlands organizado pela @hivebr.spt e @marianaemilia ! Foi uma iniciativa muito legal para ajudar a unir a comunidade brasileira e eles mandaram muito bem na organização também.

Fiquei um pouco surpreso em ter terminado em 1° lugar, porque na primeira etapa (1 de 4) não percebi que havia um round 2 e fugi de todas as minhas batalhas 😢.

Sobre o formato: no total foram 4 torneios (1 por semana começando todos os sábados) com 2 turnos, onde os 40% melhores avançavam para a 2º para jogar pelo menos uma vez contra cada jogador que se classificou. No final de cada torneio os jogadores marcavam pontos dependendo da sua posição, por exemplo: 1º lugar 4 pontos, 2º lugar – 3 pontos e assim sucessivamente.

O que eu mais gostei do formato e a organização foi bastante assertiva foi a possibilidade de enviar minhas batalhas a qualquer momento em uma janela de 24 horas, permitindo que mais jogadores participasse.

Então, decidi compartilhar neste post algumas das batalhas que achei interessante adicionando alguns insights e dicas de estratégia. Porém, gostaria de mencionar que não sou um expert/profissional, apenas um jogador que gosta de estudar e analisar os setups considerando o conjunto de regras + mana cap, logo não considere essas dicas como uma verdade absoluta.

• Picking an element: If all the elements are available, Earth 🌿 and Water 💧 are usually the best options in 35 Mana+, because it is very likely to beat most of the elements like: Death ☠️, Life 🌟 and Fire 🔥. Thaddius Brood is the perfect counter against Obsidian, but it is a very risky choice, for this reason most players don’t try to counter. Of course that everything depends on the rule sets, this is just a simplification. Rules like Weak Magic, Lost Magic, Silenced Summoner, Healed Out (Goblin Psychic tank heal is essential), Super Sneak/Equal Opportunity and Taking Sides (Magi of Chaos is very important) are pretty bad for Earth. If Earth is not available you should always go with Water due to +1 armor is a huge advantage against Death, Fire and Life. In short: Earth 🌿 = Water 💧 > Fire 🔥 = Death ☠️ > Life 🌟. Follow below two examples (Link of the battles in the images).

Escolhendo um elemento: Se todos os elementos estiverem disponíveis, a Terra 🌿 e Água geralmente são as melhores opção em 35 Mana+, pois vencerá a maioria dos elementos como: Morte ☠️, Vida 🌟 e Fogo 🔥. Thaddius Brood é o contra-ataque perfeito contra Obsidian, mas é uma escolha muito arriscada, por isso a maioria dos jogadores não tenta contra-atacar escolhendo Morte. Claro que tudo depende dos conjuntos de regras, isso é apenas uma simplificação. Regras como Magia Fraca, Magia Perdida, Invocador Silenciado, Healed Out (cura de tanque Psychic Goblin é essencial), Super Sneak/Equal Opportunity e Tomar Lado (Magi of Chaos é muito importante) são muito ruins para a Terra 🌿. Se a Terra não estiver disponível, você deve (praticamente) sempre escolher Água, pois +1 de armadura e velocidade é uma grande vantagem contra Morte, Fogo e Vida. Resumindo: Terra 🌿 = Água 💧 > Fogo 🔥 = Morte ☠️ > Vida 🌟. Segue abaixo dois exemplos. (Link das batalhas nas imagens)

• If you are sure that you are not going to face Water 💧 team, since only Earth, Life and Death are available, then Death is the best option! In this battle that I lost, my opponent thought the same about Death being the dominant strategy and also there is an important concept: in Explosive Weaponry rule set we want to priorize three things: high damage to blast the adjacent monsters, be as fast as possible and look for monsters with these abilities: Taunt, Double Strike, Magic Reflect and Snipe/Opportunity. I made a mistake choosing squishy monsters.

• Se você tiver certeza de que não vai enfrentar o time da Água 💧, já que apenas Terra, Vida e Morte estão disponíveis, então a Morte é a melhor opção! Nesta batalha que perdi, meu oponente pensou o mesmo sobre a morte ser a estratégia dominante e também há um conceito importante: no conjunto de regras de Armas Explosivas queremos priorizar três coisas: alto dano para explodir os monstros adjacentes, ser tão rápido quanto possível e procure por monstros com essas habilidades: Taunt, Double Strike, Magic Reflect e Snipe/Opportunity. Eu cometi um erro ao escolher monstros que morrem facilmente.

• Be careful with Mycelic Slipspawn position (monsters with Taunt in general)! Since she has Taunt ability if you are not putting her in 1st position, the 6th position is usually the best one, because if the opponent uses blast damage, three monsters will be damaged as you can see in the battle below. Although is not very common to happen this, it is better safe than sorry.

• Tenha cuidado com a posição Mycelic Slipspawn! Já que ela tem a habilidade Taunt se você não estiver colocando ela na 1ª posição, a 6ª posição geralmente é a melhor, pois se o oponente usar dano de explosão, três monstros sofrerão dano, como você pode ver na batalha abaixo. Embora não seja muito comum acontecer isso, é melhor prevenir do que remediar.

• In this battle I was pretty sure it would be a mirror (Fire 🔥 x Fire 🔥) match due to the noxious fumes rule set. The best monster is without a doubt Forgotten One. The most important thing is: you usually don’t want to put him in 1st position because he is very likely to be the last man standing and you want him full HP and also Scavo Chemist to cleanse a different tank. So position 4 or 5 it is usually better. However, in silver league or higher he acquires Retaliate ability and he is very good in the 6th position against the sneak attacks.

• Nesta batalha eu tinha certeza que seria uma partida Fogo x Fogo devido ao conjunto de regras de fumaça nociva. O melhor monstro é sem dúvida o Esquecido. O mais importante é: você geralmente não quer colocá-lo na 1ª posição porque ele será o último homem em pé e você quer que o Scavo Chemist limpe um tanque diferente, logo, obtive vantagem no erro do oponente nessa partida. Portanto, a posição 4 ou 5 geralmente é melhor. No entanto, na liga prata ou superior ele adquire a habilidade Retaliar e é muito bom na 6ª posição contra os ataques furtivos.
