My Views on Africa's Undersea Internet Cables

So I read an article on undersea cables that are making the internet reach Africa. It made me think of the importance of these cables and the problems they can create when they don’t work properly.

So, picture this: huge, fat underwater wires linking Africa to other parts of the globe.

However, at times, these cables snap leading to some African countries without the internet. Can you fathom living for a whole day with no internet access? That’s just like a terrible dream!

The article mentions how certain countries experienced internet challenges due to cable malfunctions such as Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire and South Africa. Even tech giants such as Microsoft had to alert its clients about delays in repairing these cables.

Unbelievable😳 Something as small as a cable breakage could cause such enormous problems.

They think that the cables might have snapped due to the presence of fishing boats; and this is what interests them.

This is akin to a real time, real life adventure story- boats in oceans leading to internet hitches! But on a serious note, it just shows how delicate these cables are and how they should be protected.

I thought it was totally rad when Jess Auerbach Jahajeeah, who teaches at the University of Cape Town, started a book about these cables. She even got involved with a ship that does repairs on them.

So imagine cruising around the world while ensuring that we can always access the web. It’s quite important!!!

These lines may look like mere threads under water but they are Africa’s link to the worldwide internet. We would be lost in a digital world without these sea cables.

It is incredible to imagine how far technology has come that really allows us to lay wires under ocean floors between continents.

However, you know, the digital divide is also shown by these cables which are amazing. When the cables break, it is impossible to link up some parts of Africa with others thereby expanding the gap.

It does not seem right that some people have fast and reliable internet while others still struggle to get online.

I think that something should be done to ensure every African has access to the web. It is not only about convenience but rather about education, communication and opportunity as well. Together, we can accomplish great things when we are all connected.

And so ,next time you browse web or watch cat videos on youtube take a moment of your life reflect upon those undersea cables which keep you in touch with rest of humanity.

Furthermore, let’s just hope that they remain intact so that we could all enjoy wonders of the internet regardless of where any one in Africa might be situated.
