The unexpected guest
James was living a well oiled machine life moving according to how he wanted it. He woke up every morning by 6 am, had his bath , exercised and headed to his dream job as a marketer in one of the famous business companies. Technically, he was living a good and happy life with his girlfriend Annie and their relationship was going to three years now, and they still stood firm. But aunt blessings arrival changed everything.
She showed up unannounced at his doorstep on a Friday morning, her imposing figure filled the doorway and her sharp, piercing and-jawline brown eyes seemed to bore into James soul.
"Hello dear" she said, her voice dripping with condescension. " I hope I am not disturbing or interrupting anything". She said.
James mother has passed away when he was entering into the stage of adulthood, and he was just beginning to set his life on track and aunt blessing had become his guardian since than. Their relationship was strained, to say the least.
Aunty blessing settled into the guest room and each day became like living hell for James. She criticized his cooking, his work, and even his relationship with Annie, and it was unbearable.
" You are wasting all your potential and time", she would tell him no.
"You should aim higher" she always said.
Her constant nagging and jabs chipped away at james confidence. James began to doubt himself, questioning every action he took and wondering if he was indeed good enough.
One morning, as he was preparing his food in the kitchen, aunt blessing cornered him. " You know I've been thinking you should come to work with me".
He recoiled, horrified. "Aunt blessing, I have a job which I love."
" That agency will never make you rich" she said. "My company pays twice as much".
He refused, but aunt blessing wouldn't just let it be. She kept on calling him daily, badgering him to quit his job.
The stress took it's toll on his life. He started making huge mistakes at work, and his usually supportive colleagues and friends grew frustrated.
Annie sensed his distress and suggested they take a break from all the chaos. "We can't let aunt's blessing ruin our lives", she said.
But despite the effort, Aunt blessing's grip was too tight. She began meddling in his relationship, asking and questioning Annie about her intentions towards James.
The final straw came when she walked into his workplace , berating him in front of colleagues.
That evening James confronted her." Aunt blessing", he yelled" you need to leave now".
Her eyes flashed with anger, but she packed her bags and left.
As the door closed behind her, James felt like a weight was lifted on his shoulder, everything was fine ..... until aunt blessing arrived. But now he realized that he was stronger and more confident than he was.
James apologized to Annie and promised to take their relationship more seriously. At work he regained his footing and his creativity flourished.
Aunt Blessing's visit was a wake-up call, a chance for James to stand up for himself and cherish the people who truly mattered.
Two months had passed since aunt's blessing left and James life was back on track. Annie and James were doing great, and they were stronger than ever.
One evening , as Annie and James cooked dinner together, Annie turned to me with a curious expression on her face, "hey have you heard from your aunt blessing lately?"
James shook his head in disagreement. "No, and I don't want to. "
Annie chuckled. "You know I am glad you stood up to her, your wonderful".
James smiled, but just at that moment the doorbell chimed " who's that", james asked as he was approaching the door.
His heart sank as he saw aunt blessing standing on his veranda with a sly smile spreading across her face.
"Aunt blessing, what do you want" james asked, curious as to what the sudden visit was about because this time around she wasn't with her luggage to stay.
"I've come to apologize "she said, her voice dripping with insincerity" I realized I was too hard on you and I want to make it up to you".
James exchanged a skeptical glance with Annie. Was this another manipulation tactic?
But aunt blessing words hit a nerve and perhaps, just perhaps, she wanted to genuinely change.
" Come in "James hesitantly said.
Aunt's blessing visit this time around was a surprise, but james was completely prepared for the unknown.
As the days passed they began to reconnect with each other, sharing stories and laughter. The past still
Lingered, but a glimmer of understanding still emerged.
This is sad
There are so many aunties like Aunty Blessing who frustrate people when their parents are late
It’s very crazy out there
Yes, you are definitely right
Hello @eberechi01,
I liked this story. You develope the character of James well. You have a strong arc--everything goes fine until the appearance of Aunt Blessing. In a way, she is a blessing, although she is annoying. Because of her disruptive behavior, James learns to stand up for himself.
There are some issues in the story which I will point out so that in the future your writing can shine even more brightly. For one thing, proper names are always capitalized. Thus, Aunt Blessing is upper case 'A' and 'B'. Note in my first paragraph I used lower case for blessing, the word, and upper case for Blessing, the name.
Also, when you indicate quotes, you must always put a comma after a person has finished speaking. You sometimes neglect to do this. Keep your eye on POV (point of view). At one point, you are so involved in the action (that's good...relate to your characters) that you refer to James as 'me'. Be careful of that. Easy mistake to make.
I like your writing style and I think you have a good handle on structure. Pay a little more attention to details and you will see your writing improve.
Thanks for sharing this with us. Keep writing!
Thank you for the correction and pointing out my mistakes, next time I will be more careful
