The pain of a broken promise

avatar

It took me a long time trying to recall one promise I've Broken, and that's because One thing I never let down is my promises. I may go any length to ensure I fulfill my vow because it keeps disturbing my peace, but I recall I broke one two months ago and it was for a reason and I was happy I did because I would have suffered from it.

Back in school, everyone believed I was a rich kid and that's because I always tried to come through for the fellowship I belong to financially. No one knows I often give my all so others can have comfort. So when one of the students who had graduated a long time ago realized I was in his town, he was desperate to meet with me but before the appointed date, he sent me a message asking for a loan from me. In his words, he ordered for a goods that was not delivered to him worth a huge amount of money and he had taken the case to his lawyer who requested for #60,000(in Nigeria currency) he was sure to win the case and refund me as soon as possible. I told him I didn't have any money yet since it wasn't the end of the month. At first he agreed to find it somewhere else but came back later to say he'll get it somewhere, and when I'm paid, I'll loan him the said amount to repay those he borrowed from and I agreed and promised to give him the amount when I've been paid.

Through our subsequent discussion, I realized the guy believed I had money and that's the reason why he was bent on borrowing from me and I feared my money wasn't going to return. First, I had double mind about the story he told me concerning his goods, and I wasn't comfortable with the idea of borrowing from me to repay others. So, I kept giving him stories after another until the day we scheduled to meet. Personally I needed to sort out some bills and I did without considering the promise I made to give him the money when I had been paid. I told him I had bills and didn't have as much as I expected and couldn't give him the money. He was disappointed, but it was for my own good. He tried to accept fate and move on and I believe he did later on. But with the stories he told me about other business and the money he kept mentioning, I was happy I did not give him the money, I knew i wouldn't have been able to ask him and my money may not have returned

We stopped talking after that day. We chatted for a few days before the mute. I can't tell if he got angry that I broke my promise. I believe he had promised his creditors that he would pay them back soon only for me to disappoint him when he felt he had gotten someone he'd get the money from to pay them back.

As per Baba Olowo wey you be na. Sometimes people can be like that not knowing that everybody is managing.

It's good you went with your instincts. What if after borrowing him, he feels you are rich na so you won't need the money again or even the whole business issue was a lie in the first place.

Toh, sometimes, people believe one has enough and that's why he gives out not knowing it's sacrifice

It sounds like you had a difficult situation to navigate, especially when it comes to balancing your commitment to helping others and managing your own financial responsibilities. It's clear that you prioritize keeping your promises, but sometimes circumstances can complicate these decisions.

It's essential to consider your own well-being and financial stability when deciding whether to fulfil a promise, especially when it involves lending money. Trust is a vital aspect of any relationship, and it's important to assess the situation and ensure that your actions align with your values and capabilities.

Communication is key in these situations. It might be beneficial to have an open and honest conversation with the individual you promised to help, explaining your perspective and the reasons behind your decision. Transparency can foster understanding and potentially maintain the relationship despite the broken promise.

Rightly said, communication is key when the party involves listens to understand. This last event gave me an opener to be careful with how quickly I make promises.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts

I know very well the desire to not break my promises. I actually couldn't think a time myself when I broke a promise so its going to be difficult for me to write on this post prompt. Glad you shared though :)

Rich kid. Hehe!

I'm sorry but I just had to. Lol

Sometimes, all we need to do is follow our guts and instincts. In my opinion, you did the right thing. He will come around. If he does not, do not beat Yourself up about it.

Haha. I'm not worried about it. I like it this way, everyone to himself

There are times when situations get out of our hands and we cannot keep our promises, I know what it is like to feel guilty for not keeping one, however there are those who judge without knowing then it was best that nothing was done in their favor, if they are aware they understand that point.
Anyway, this bad experience has been a learning experience, my friend. There will be another opportunity to help someone else.

It is better the way you handled it. If he frankly told you he needed your money to pay other debts, then who will he borrow from and pay you? If he is not talking anymore to you, with time, he will.

That's what I thought. It wasn't a good idea to borrow from me to pay others

Omo, he wanted to be using you to pay debts, and you wanted to agree? 😂

You're lucky you didn't give him again, if not your money would have entered voicemail

Hahaha. I agreed unconsciously, until I had to sit and rethink the whole talk.
I was lucky I escaped this one
