When Irish Eyes are Smiling: Market Friday

The luck of the Irish! It's a thing, yes? Happy St. Patrick's Day! It is all about the green today! When I was growing up, I went to a Catholic School in the Northeast part of the United States, commonly referred to as New England. The schools were taught by nuns and priests, and most of them were from Ireland. So we learned how to do an Irish jig and dance and we especially celebrated St. Patrick's Day! Every family had a nun or priest in the family. It could be a sister, brother, cousin, or aunt, I am not sure I knew a family that did not have one. The nuns were integral to our lives, and our upbringing. I loved those days. I remember if you didn't wear anything green on that day, you might get a playful pinch for the error of your ways! It's true! You are in the right place! It is definitely #MarketFriday!

Yes, my favorite picture I took of a three-leaf clover, showing off in a shadow. I admit to not setting up the shot, it just happened, as so many things do in life, Color me grateful for a coincidence. I went to my favorite nursery this week, looking for Spring or something like it. The blooms were sparse, their numbers few, but, then I saw some little snowdrops. Green as an Irish beer, or something like that.

snowdrops.jpg

Oh, my little snowdrop
Trying hard to be Spring.
Longed-for most sincerely
When life was dreadfully edged in
With snow and uninvited gusts of wind
And no end in sight and no beginning of Spring.

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's me!!) Join me as we share our markets across the globe. I always look forward to seeing what you send me! It is amazing to see the different markets and cultures of our friends here on Hive.

Green rosary beads for Stl Patricks's Day. Every good Catholic learned how to say them. We prayed together as a class until one day, we didn't. It seems odd for a while, but, then, it felt normal. So easy to change habits when you are young and malleable.

Praying hands.jpg

When Irish eyes are smiling
Sure, 'tis like the morn in Spring
In the lilt of Irish laughter
You can hear the angels sing
When Irish hearts are happy
All the world seems bright and gay
And when Irish eyes are smiling
Sure, they steal your heart away 💚

"When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" was written by Chauncey Olcott and George Graff, Jr in 1912. This is actually not the beginning of the song, but the chorus. When we sang it in school, I thought this was the whole song, so either I was not paying attention or this is the only part they taught us.

cup.jpg

I had to have it. I'm not even Irish, but for one day of the year. Still, for $5.99, I would get my money's worth in the joy it gave me. Yes~ I am using it today as I make my entry into the morning!

fridgecheck.png

I'm giving you the greens today! One can never have too many greens, yes? I have to admit, it is true, this post is about as eclectic as one can get. Shopping at the Commissary and true to the gossip that is being spread around, the prices of everything have more than doubled since Christmas.

20230224_111504.jpg

More flowers #alwaysaflower because one can never have too many ever, but, especially in the Spring. Are you blooming in place or are the flowers abundant where you are?

sunshine.jpg

The clouds just ran away from home today. I wish to rise above the clouds, and gaze at the sun while it shines, shines, shines

Please leave the link to your post here so it can easily be found by others. It helps you and me to have them in one place. Where else can you take such a quick trip around the globe? Thank you so much for joining us!! ❤

And just like that, this post is done. I hope you had a good time and learned a little something new. As always, I want to thank you for taking the time to visit, and just remember, #MarketFriday loves you! Thank you for supporting the challenge! Have a fabulous day! Cheers!! *As always, there must be flowers to color my world. #alwaysaflower Thank you for visiting my post 💖 Don't ever forget what an amazing world we live in, people. Some days, it is not so easy to see, how truly wonderful it really is. Always remember, kindness counts. Wherever you go, whatever you do. Love to all!

I love green too 💚. During my student days, I used to have a green dress and I bought matching green earrings. I loved that dress. That's when I knew that green clothes suit me more.

Denise's love for flowers is quite evident and it speaks volumes about her character. Her appreciation of the beauty of flowers is a reflection of the beauty of her soul, which we are lucky to have here on Hive. As for myself, it has been a while since I shared my marketing experiences on Market Friday. I have been extremely busy with work and have not had the opportunity to explore various markets that would be worth sharing. Nonetheless, I will keep enjoying and reading about other people's experiences. How are you doing, dear?@dswigle

Not to worry, #MarketFriday will be here when you are ready. Don't forget a market is anywhere that you pay for a service (haircuts, seamstress) or anywhere you pay to enter(museums, art galleries, and the like) Just so you know. :)

I do realize how busy you are and I respect that. I am doing great and have been away for almost two months, but, I am back home now.

I am always happy to hear about you and the projects that have made life easier for so many! You are a wonderful human being! ❤️

Wow! You also look good wearing green. That shadow of a leaf looks so good and you had a great angle capturing it.

School and our family really brings a big influence in our lives. If they teach us to pray then we know how to pray.

Anyway, for the second time around I am happy to participate #marketfriday and here is my participation: https://ecency.com/hive-196308/@jenthoughts/an-experience-eating-grasshopper-and?referral=jenthoughts

Not so much Irish today as yesteryear here in SA, skirl of pipe bands got feet tapping in russet kilt with three leaf clover embroidered to the corner with pin hitched in slightly higher.

End of afternoon fun, move into and Irish Pub to enjoy a Guinness! Then singing began, days we remember.

Spring blooms, rosary memories all swirling around in a terrific St Patrick's day greeting, have a wonderful day!

Thank you for the words, Joan! @joanstewart I do remember the years of fine celebrations, there was a parade today in New York that my family never misses, here in town, Washington D.C. will have a Shamrock Stroll / St Patrick's Day Weekend Bar Crawl - happening on Saturday,

Oh, Hell NO! Not if it was the only thing to do this weekend!

The pub for a Guinness is more my speed. Singing, watching them dance. :)

The fond memories are remembered along with making new ones. That is what this day is about. Although, I did make a killer corned beef and cabbage dinner. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Thank you for stopping by and for the awesome tip! 💚

Happy Paddies Day!!

That is a whole lot of greens in a fridge!

We used to go out to the pub to get proper sloshed every St PAtrick's day. Sadly no more, perhaps until the kids are older. Even in the crazy sectarian riven Glasgow it was still something that we celebrated. Albeit by getting smashed!

Greens are good for you! Ask the Good Lady!

I loved the Irish pubs on St.Paddies Day! It was a ritual to go to Brock's Irish Pub and close the place down and then carry on in the parking lot until we were kicked out of there.

Even I could be Irish for a day. Good, we did it when we were younger. It won't be the same when we are older. :)

Oh, the good old days.

That makes sense...and what a great way of having fun, yet staying on topic. Leading by example... That's what I would call it! You always encourage us to think outside the box! This is a great example of doing so!

I am aware of St. Patrick's day, but we are not really big on celebrating it here in our area... But once again, it's interesting to read about it and learn how people in other parts of the world do celebrate it!

Have a great week, @dswigle!

Good morning my friend. Your upbringing sounds familiar, I to was brought up Catholic and those Irish priests and nuns were a big part of it.
Many times after Sunday mass, Father O’Rouck and sometimes my 1st grade teacher Sister Christine Marie would come to our house for brunch, us kids loved it.

I like your rosary beads, I cherish a blue crystal string that I watched my mom use all the time, after she passed they were my go to when things got rough.

Your flowers are beautiful, I am dying for the snow to be gone and see the colors of spring.
Enjoy your day!

Haha! Truth! They were all Irish! :) OK, not all, but, noticeably represented. I love those kinds of memories! Ours was Father O'Connor and my 1t teacher was Sister Brendan Marie. I remember asking her why they gave her a boy's name. OMG how rude! I was young and curious, I actually thought if it was given by mistake, she could get a new one.

I loved when we got to see them outside of the school/church scenario. It made us feel special, to be chosen like that. I remember when I was a little older but still young, I saw them at the grocery store, buying beer Beer!! I never divulged their secret, only to find out much later that, it was allowed. LOL

The rosary beads are so very special to me, my very best friend in the whole world made them for me. My mom loved using them when she came to visit. I have a collection of rosaries. My mothers, grandmothers, aunts, my own, and a few I have been given over time. I don't do the stations of the cross or any of that, but, I still find comfort in using them. And when things get rough, most definitely. ❤️

It has been a long winter for you without your usual reprieve. I hope that spring comes soon to you, I am sure enjoying the turning of the season.

Thank you for stopping by and leaving your words. Happy St. Patricks Day!💚

Hello, I use my rosary beads almost like worry beads. I find comfort also in having them near me when things are rough. While my sister was dying I held them together with her and prayed and I truly believed it gave her peace.

The Irish are high spirited and fun to be around, we had a great time.

It rained here today and we had a lot of melting snow thank goodness, hoping to see some green grass soon.
Thanks for your thoughtful, kind and funny comment, always a pleasure.

That is the perfect comparison! Worry beads! I always, always carry a set in my purse. I know, but, I do and just knowing I have them gives me comfort.

I was visiting my mom in the hospital and I heard a voice saying she wished she brought her rosary beads. I went into her room and prayed with her I didn't know her and I have no idea what came over me, but, she fell asleep while praying.

I believe it did give your sister peace, the same as it gives us peace.

I hope the rest of yuor night is wonderfully peaceful.

That's a lot of money in your fridge right there! It's nuts how expensive fruits and vegetables are these days! I think 75% of our grocery bill is usually the fresh stuff versus the boxed stuff.

Isn't it crazy? I have been tracking the food prices here and many have gone up on a weekly/biweekly basis. Eating out is even worse on the pockets.

Given the fact that everything is trucked/flown or other means of transport, the gas alone would kill a mere mortal.

Average annual food-at-home prices were 11.4 percent higher in 2022 than in 2021. For context, the 20-year historical level of retail food price inflation is 2.0 percent per year. In 2022, prices for all food categories increased faster than their historical averages from 2002–21.

Right? It is crazy. Of course, leading the pack is one of the most noticeable. The egg prices. Thank God for brothers who raise chickens, yes? 😊 They have gone up 32% last year. Avian influenza, you know. Everything in between was pricey too. The thing that remained the closest to the historical prices was beef and veal at 5.3%. Come to find out, nothing in this world is free. Except maybe my fruit and nut trees. We need to plant more fruit and nuts.

You know #MarketFriday loves you!

It's nice to see that the prices of beef and other meats have come down since the pandemic. I am still kicking around the idea of just buying part of a cow. My wife doesn't eat beef though and I eat far less than I used to, so I am not sure if it is worth it. It's just ridiculous how expensive it is to try and eat healthy these days.

0
0
0.000
avatar

I remember you saying she doesn't eat beef. You can always get 1/4 cow and split it with a friend or relative.

It is truly ridiculous! I do get all my corn on the cob when it is being picked and cheap, parboil it, and seal it in a vacuum-sealed bag. I open it up all winter and it tastes just like fresh picked.

It just takes a lot more effort to make it all work now. As if we need more things to take up our time. :)

0
0
0.000
avatar

We do that with our corn too. I started using the cooler method a couple of years ago and that has worked out really well. We do a lot of vacuum sealing. We try to hit the farmers market in the summer for better prices, but that only helps us part of the year since you know how winters are in MI.

0
0
0.000
avatar

Exactly. Picking season is when it is cheapest here, with the overabundance of crops, it needs to get pushed out.

What is the cooler method?

I vacuum seal enough (or can the produce) and it will last all through the winter, right up until the next good season.

Winters in Michigan are unforgiving! :) But, some of the time, it really is pretty fun! Ice fishing! skating! snowshoeing! tobogganing!

0
0
0.000
avatar

Basically you just put the corn in a cooler and fill it with boiling water. Cover it and leave it for a fixed amount of time. You have to shuck it all first though. I do enjoy Michigan winters for the first couple of storms. After that I am ready for summer.

0
0
0.000

I actually didn't know you could do that! I use a lobster pot, but this sounds like you have a huge cooler. :)

St. Patrick's Day is one we celebrate with a Guinness and a corned beef and cabbage dinner! It is tradition! :) I am sure you have many we never heard of also, that is the fun of learning about different cultures.

Thanks so much for being part of the challenge!

Hello! Hello! And Happy St. Paddies Day to you!! 💚 I love winter, but, I am so glad that Spring has found us. Everything is in bloom, but, it isn't quite time. Soon, but, not yet.

I love your unintentionalness. Always the best!

I made my corned beef and cabbage, carrots, new potatoes, and soda bread. You know there was a Guinness involved and then my sister called up and sang an Irish bar song.

Your dinner sounded glorious, as did the delivery of the sibling sang tune, I am still smiling about that!

And I am like you, I adore winter, but am always beyond elated when Spring blooms😊

#MarketFriday is loved in return💚

Hi @dswigle - Denise ;))

I like the three-leaf clover, the green and Ireland... I would really like to visit Ireland, but I really don't know anything about Santos, I go by the energy and the signs of the Universe. They say that as above so below, as inside so outside... nothing, I believe in those things. Still, St. Patrick's Day is nice.

I loved your picture of the clover. And the little jar with the inscription is cute. If you see mine... 😆

St. Patrick is a holiday today. It has nothing to do with the rosary and praying. It was kind of a crazy, eclectic post and hard to follow, so I apologize.

I think anyway a person gets their energy is cool. Not right or wrong way, just what works for us individually. Peace of mind, peace of heart.

Thank you for the compliment on the clover. I like how the shot came out. That is actually a coffee mug and it is kind of cute! Thank you. Thank you for dropping your link!

It says:

I have a doubt, do we bums go to heaven or do they come looking for us?

Aawww I didn’t manage to post today… next week I make sure of it. 🤓
Yep, St. Patrick’s day today. Will have to enjoy it next year up close 🍀🍀🍀 in our new country of residence. Looks like it will be May. ⛴️🚗

Such a pretty flowers 🌸 great captures.
I love the hands with the rosary 📿 great capture. 🥰 it speaks so much… so much feeling in that photo.

Thanks for sharing that with us today. Such a different times back then. It all changed.

Have a wonderful Friday and enjoy your weekend Denise.
Happy St Patrick’s day to you. Sláinte!
Big hug 🤗

There are only so many hours in a day and you cannot possibly be everywhere on the blockchain at one time. I know, you try really hard and I am pretty sure that you comment on most of the posts!

Yikes!

You are so awesome and you really are amazing. OMG!!!! You are going there! In May!!! How great for you! Ireland is an amazing place and I think you will like it so much, and the people. The people are the best!

You know, better than all the rest. Kidding. That used to be a chant/actually a basketball cheer. :) I know you will have the best time. Woo-hoo! I am excited for you and I am sure that you are excited to be getting life back on track. Is the hubby doing okay with everything?

The flowers are really popping here, especially the flowering trees. The hands with rosary, ah, if only pictures could speak.

Life was different back then and I loved it! Such great childhood memories! Hope your St. Patrick's Day was awesome! Slainte!

Love to you!

You are so right Denise, there are only so many hours in a day… 😊
Even though I am busy I do comment on new posts and support people around here.
Also I do engage every day with a community where I am the comment moderator from. Busy days in real life so don’t help.
Having such a hard time finding a rental on the other side. There is a housing crisis going on, but I won’t give up. Will find something. Even if it is only for a few months. Hehehe 🤭 once there it will be much easier.

Thank you so much Denise for your kind words, they mean so much to me. Much appreciated!
Yep… Ireland it is 😎 so happy about that. We go towards the west coast, like we did in Scotland.
They say the people are even friendlier than up here. The nature is almost the same. Climate for sure is.
So I don’t mind and am soooo looking forward to it. Hubby is too, just not the why we have to move again. Luckily both of us don’t need a visa or anything.

Thank you for being excited with me. 🤩 Finally we will get our lives back on track.
The company is still working out options. Hope to hear more next week. He probably will be a cross border worker going forward if they can work things out internally and with accounting. 🍀🤞🏻

I can’t wait for May and being done with everything… it’s such a hassle. We have been in limbo sooooo long, as you know. 2 countries didn’t work out. They say 3 times a charm… so… 😉

Looks like spring is slow here. I do see some leaves appearing on trees.
It was a wonderful day, hope yours too.
Love to you 👋🏻🌺🥰

I know you do! :) I even said that because I cannot believe how organized you must be to be able to still do that, even though you are insanely busy!

I think the Irish are definitely friendlier, but, that makes me sound like I don't think the Scots are. Not true! Just have different temperaments. I am soooo glad you don't need a Visa! Yes@ Third time is the charm! Oh, you will have different options? Yay! That is even more exciting!

I have spent so much time in limbo, I do not envy you one bit!

I am so out of the loop. I didn't realize that you were a comment moderator. Which community do you do that for? I hope your day is going fabulously! @littlebee4

Hahaha I think I just do it Denise. A little bit of everything in my days. I am exhausted at the end of the day at the moment. This will get better after the move.
I had to get the guest room ready too, as Friday we have our last visitors here for the weekend hahaha friends from London, they are driving the NC500 route… than a week of packing and Saturday we drive 12 hours down to hubbies Mom. We are helping them lay down a terracotta floor in the livingroom. What probably takes 2 weeks to finish with grouting and sealing. When we come back from that I have less than 1,5 week to finish packing… hahaha 😜 oh timings… but if I promise to do something I will 😇
I so need more hours in a day.

Yes, that’s it… both are just different temperaments. It will be amazing.
I found during the weekend a rental house, signed the contract and payed the deposit. 🎉🎉 so happy that I managed from afar. 😊
The rent starts April… but I won’t move until May. And hubby can’t move until mid July… but in the end it will be all fine.

Yes I think I started around October last year in the thisisawesome community run by Erik, he also has wearealive. It’s fun 🤩 I’m happy to help around here.

Just booked the ferry crossing for me. It is all becoming real now. Now… back to packing.
Have a wonderful Tuesday and enjoy your week.
I won’t be around much. But will check in everyday 😊👋🏻
Hugs 🤗

Hi @dswigle, that clover photo is fantastic, especially with the chicken wire shadow.

Being half Irish I can say anyone can be accepted as Irish on St. Patty's day!

Here is my post for Market Friday this week. https://ecency.com/hive-196308/@rt395/i-bought-a-sakura-tree

I read your post and thought: it's just amazing how different our childhood and upbringing are. now I understand even better your attitude to some things. I grew up in an atheist country and went to an atheist school. churches and monks were as far from us as the moon. your photos are great: both flowers and a clover leaf!!! I didn’t know about this holiday at all before, I only learned about it from your posts. I like how you can please yourself in the little things. this is right! have a nice weekend, dear! 😀

I think I can understand that it is a different upbringing, one that is foreign to me, although I had several cousins that lived in former Czechoslovakia. Their mom was religious, but, they were not allowed to go to church or worship. For me, it was all about the culture, traditions, rituals, and family ties.

They have what they call Cathoic-Atheism, where they accept all of the traditions, culture, and rituals are lived, but the existence of God is rejected.

But, I can see where my traditions that I carry over to the next generation and things of that nature, are a little over the top sometimes, Sorry ❤️

We have always celebrated St. Patrick's Day, which funny enough isn't even our holiday, but, Irelands. We had a lot of Irish Immigrants last century and now we all are Irish for one day! :)

Thank you for the kind words! I appreciate them and I want to thank yu for supporting my challenge!

I always like the way you have your fridge nicely organised. Mine isn't so well stock so I had to go out for lunch on Friday. Got a free coffee. Sort of.

Awwww, darlin! Do you like my fridge? Say it isn't so! It is a picture of my fridge. I told you I was wrapped a little tight. Kidding. Years ago, I got tired of the food being past prime because I didn't know I had it. I got the giant plastic containers from one of the big warehouse stores BJ's, Costco, or Sam's, and rinse and reuse them. It keeps food from squishing, I can stack it for more visibility and I can find it!!! I sometimes do refrigerator checks and people have to go to their fridges and snap s shot. It has made a few people turn to this way of keeping their fridges.

I took a peek this morning at your pumpkin post! I won't lie! It has been so busy here, I am just getting back to the comments. How can you fit so many comments in a day without living on here!! I know, what a whiner I am! :)

Everyone is Irish today, except (apparently) your daughter. Pinch her for me. :)

Thank you for stopping by and leaving your words, thank you for being part of the challenge!

You go soooooooooooooooooo soon!

hehehe I'm currently writing my third post for today! LOL (to schedule everything) cuz i'm doing this fun little "where the heck is dreemie" contest next week - where I hide little clues on all my daily posts.

but shhhhhhh you know... how difficult that can be - sh sh shhhh LOL

we say no more LOL

so scheduling as much as possible and hopefully - everything works out hahahaha

I am sure it will work out fine. I am so slow, It takes me a while to clear #MarketFriday comments and posts. I wish I were faster, but, it ain't happening. 😁 Ohhhh! Where's Dreemie? She's floating, people! Hehe

How difficult can that be? My own family put a GPS on me! Honestly, I am sure my sisters chipped me.😂

I never did get to schedule anything, I wanted to in the worse way... Maybe next time. It will give me something to work towards! Because you know, I just don't have enough! :)

Happy St. Paddies Day! 💚

Happy St Patrick's day.
That is a whole bunch of beautiful green
I love the rosary and have had so many of it in different colors, but often preferred that white that illuminates the room when there is no light.

We felt like it gave a divine presence each time the light comes on.

I also went exploring how much ladies spend on their outfits just to look beautiful.

Holy crap that may be the most neat and tidy refrigerator I have ever see. O.o
Does it always look like that or just for the photo shoot lol
Mine looks like a racoon ran a muck in it for an afternoon.
Our Daffodils popped around the first of the month then survived a few weeks of ice and snow...

And we are still buried in ice and snow here, in the north Europe.

Happy belated St. Patrics Day....

I never knew that Christian do have a ritual of reciting on rosary beads.
Muslims do have it, you know.

The images are awesome but being a house wife, your refrigerator got my attention. Hehe. How clean and tidy ......
You are an awesome !LADY. 😍

Wao All these pictures looks so beautiful and amazing you have shared with us. Your glasses is very beautiful and very different from others. The plant on top of the cup you shared looks more beautiful. Vegetables and fruits are very beneficial for human health. Here in Pakistan, fruit's has become so expensive that many people cannot afford it. I will also try to share with you the next time I am here in Pakistan's Friday Market.

So it's green minded Friday? :D Happy St. Patrick's Day! We used to sing a song when we were kids that I thought was the whole song too until I found it was just the chorus. Sorry, I forgot the song because at some point we just stopped singing it and forgot all about it. Really weird. Beautiful photos!

I had to have it. I'm not even Irish, but for one day of the year. Still, for $5.99, I would get my money's worth in the joy it gave me.

!LOL Well I like the text in the cup hahaha, so definitely worth every penny.

Shopping at the Commissary and true to the gossip that is being spread around, the prices of everything have more than doubled since Christmas.

And yup, even we have noticed the inflation kicking in here in Europe. Really worried about those who earn less or can't seem to make ends meet.

On another note, hope you enjoyed St. Patrick's day! Have to experience it sometime in either the US or Ireland itself.

I did enjoy St. Patrick's Day!! It is always fun and yes! You should make it a point to spend it somewhere that celebrates it! :)

And yup, even we have noticed the inflation kicking in here in Europe. Really worried about those who earn less or can't seem to make ends meet.

I worry about that every day. You know they are out there, they couldn't afford life before this, what are they doing now? It makes me sad to even think about it. It is happening all around us.

Thank you so much for stoping by and leaving your words.

Same, especially for my family and friends who have it more difficult and a harder time trying to survive.
