Market Friday: Cruising into the Next Week

avatar
(Edited)

Have you ever been called by the sea? The sea is calling. The sea is calling. She is relentless, releasing the song of the siren, pulling you her way. I wouldn't have it any other way. Now and then, I fight the urge and take a wander into the forest, showing that there is more to life than the sea. For this month, I have let her have her way, sailing the sea since January 14th. I have been remiss in getting enough internet to power up a post, visiting private islands that are as remote as one can get but, diving right into the peaceful life in different ports. This day was an idyllic beach day, The vantage point that I was at gave me a full view of the near beach. It was the most perfect day I could have imagined. I hope all is well in your world!

20230207_113328 cruise.jpg

Of course, what would a little island be if I didn't meander through a market or three? It is always an adventure when I try to find that thing that I am looking for. This time, I am looking with a few family members who aren't real shoppers. But, today, everyone is a shopper. Shopping first, then Denise is going to hunt down some conch stew. One of my favorite dishes! Have you ever tasted a conch? In case you were wondering, it is pronounced Konk.

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's me!!) Join me as we share our markets across the globe. I always look forward to seeing what you send me! It is amazing to see the different markets and cultures of our friends here on Hive.

20230213_151531 cruise.jpg

A short stop for another day in Nassau, Bahamas, after taking a beach day on one of their private islands. There are about 700 islands that make up this archipelago. You know, the Bahamas. Tourism is down all over, so the crowds are not nearly what they used to be. It is truly a double-edged sword. Good for me because if you are looking to purchase things, the prices are better, Of course, this means that they will be getting less for their goods as they are paying more for them. To be honest, they are either really inexpensive or way overpriced, so I try not to barter too terribly much. If you want something, just pay up, unless you are feeling really ripped off.

20230213_144500cruise.jpg

This was like stepping into a secret world, you go through a gate and it opens up into narrow streets with markets linking the streets, the sidewalks - even vendors walking around, hawking their goods. It was a city inside of a city, no space wasted, although there was no actually crowding until I got to a small flea market. But, you got a bonus for putting up with the crowds. The prices were deeply discounted. So, you can have it your way, with or without the crowd.

20230213_144145 cruise.jpg

I stopped seeing storefronts for a while, but, a sit-down market brought down the prices as they didn't have to pay the rent of a store or the price of a space under the tent. The young kids that were with us were fascinated with the carved animals. I have to say that they were more fascinated watching them carve right there as they are selling. The alligator was $9.00 which was a steal, and the shark was $10.00. Both had movable joints, so it was quite the deal.

20230213_151426 cruise.jpg

Well, yes, please...except I am looking for some run for a gift and also some vanilla extract. Little gifts for a few people back home. I am actually going to wait until I get to Mexico for the vanilla. The extract is pure, well, I can get it there anyway. Many add Karo or sugar to theirs and that is not the kind I want. I am holding out for the pure. You can tell the
difference as the flavor from the pure vanilla extract is noticeably better than the cheaper vanilla extract. The proof is in the recipe! Try it!

20230213_144438 cruise.jpg

I am not into collecting little cups of clocks or something that I don't really need. I would rather buy a teeshirt for someone, because who doesn't love a teeshirt? Especially if they are young. I even buy them for myself so I can wear them to bed. I buy a guy's tee and then it is big enough to wear as a nightgown. And soft because it is a teeshirt. Perfect gift for me. And only $5.00! What a deal.

20230213_145700 cruise.jpg

Chilled coconut? I'm in! I took a video of the guy chopping them up. He wasn't doing a really good job, or I should say that they weren't pretty, but, it was still good. Sometimes looks don't matter that much. That and the fact that he was the most inexpensive. I am guessing he is the new guy in town and he is looking to make a name for himself. He has my vote!

20230213_151849 cruise.jpg

They were selling Cuban Cigars at the store in the back. It used to be a big deal to be American and be able to buy a Cuban Cigar. Are they good? I have no idea, but, you couldn't buy one in the US, so they were very coveted. We always want what we cannot have, yes?

20230213_150746.jpg

The shops were endless and it was good luck that we found this little alley of shops. I will bet there were about 200 shops. It was a great time that was had by all. We didn't buy the rum, because I forgot, I got all caught up in some of the shops and found that sleepshirt. Mission accomplished.

20230213_145623.jpg

What?? Bangles? Two for $5.00??? Bangles for everyone! Step right up! Who could resist? It has been fun tonight, but, I need to post it before I lose it. I had that kind of luck last week! I am having a great time and I will be home next weekend, but, I finally found some internet. Many apologies for the lack of internet, but, my family was grateful. Not very loyal, are they? Thank you for coming along!

Wow! The Bahamas! Beautiful holiday destination with so many islands. The sea is wonderful and I miss it so much. Still no time to get near the sea yet!

Wanna get some very cheap and soft t-shirts too. Vanilla extract sounds just very special. Mostly we get artificial or chemical vanilla extract here! 🙀

Enjoy such a wonderful holiday!

I found a few soft and cheap teeshirts yesterday! Yay! They are too expensive back home. I wait until I come here or in Mexico to get them.

It's true! Pure vanilla is the best and it really makes a difference in baking. Thank you for your well wishes! Have a wonderful rest of your week!

Life is very good to you!

The carved alligator-like animal toy caught my eyes for real. They are so cute and it will be a good display in the living room, or to my room even. Thus, the chilled coconut? Hmm. In my country, Philippines, you'll see plenty of chilled coconuts everywhere. It's one of our favorite drinks since it's cheap and healthy, too.

Thanks for the tour and enjoy your trip!

I am so over fridge magnets! LOL That was so 10 years ago! 😁 They $5.oo tee shirt that girls sleep in is a bargain.

The mug was a good blog shot. :)

Although when I was younger, I collected mugs. I still have some of them. Yikes. Hey @grindle! Thanks for stopping by!

OMG! I admit I have some fridge magnets, especially from cool places, but, because I was transferred every year or three, it was a hassle to pack and unpack them.

I mostly sent them to my mom and sisters. :)

You aren't old school, I had to sort and keep only the necessary. otherwise it piles up too quickly.

cheers @dswigle , it has become an obsession !! back in the day , certainly in my family before fridge magnets, holiday gifts and souvenirs would be tea towels. magnets take up less space!

Tea towels! I remember those from my aunts and grandparents. I had no idea they were a thing but, I have plenty of them to believe it. 🤣

I agree magnets take up less space, but, after a while, my fridge looked like a thrift shop with all the different kinds! Now, I only keep them on the side. :) So, half a thrift shop!

That gate really does look like an entrance to a secret world... The wooden toys look nice, but I'd rather settle for something like a T-shirt made of natural fabric - I like buying men's T-shirts too - they're comfortable and soft!

That gate just opened up a whole new world there. :) I am with you on the t-shirt! Soft and comfortable, it will get more use out of it than a wooden toy. My nephew got the wooden alligator instead of a t-shirt. It is a boy thing. LOL

Oh wow, what a treat! I love those colourful, blue/yellow buildings, such joyful place to visit 😍

I have a question Denise. Is it required to post always on Fridays, or is another day of the week also possible? I’m asking, cause I also post in FungiFriday community on Fridays and posting 2 articles in one day is usually too much for me.

I know! Everyone has their posts for Friday! FungiFriday MarketFriday and the list goes on. It is #MarketFriday but, I do have people asking to post on other days. I try to catch all of the ones posted for the market and if you can try for the day before or the day after, I will do my best to get it. I usually don't fail. :)

I am not able to post two articles in one day, so I get it.

Thanks for dropping by!

The sea is definitely calling me. I've been Jonesing to go a cruise for a while now. Unfortunately it's not in the cards for us this year with everything going on. Hopefully next year though.

Oooo coconuts. Very refreshing!

More like home work is calling for me. Got a class project due on Tuesday. Things look all so colorful there.
That stairs remind me of the place near where I live where many parts of the building had stairs like that added some years ago.
For this week mission, it was a more expensive food court dinner.

This time, I am looking with a few family members who aren't real shoppers.

Hahaha...that sounds so familiar. It sounds like me to be honest...lol. I am no real shopper. But I enjoy taking the photos and I also enjoy going through the posts here in #MarketFriday and seeing other parts of the world and how things get done in those places!

I'm glad there weren't crowds this time. I hope you enjoy the freedom of movement and getting those good prices. I like your way of shopping though...without arguing too much about the price. I tend to do the same. If the price is acceptable to me, I take it as I am willing to pay the price. If not, I walk away. I don't like arguing about a price.

Thank you for sharing another awesome part of your cruise/journey! I find it really interesting and enjoy reading your posts!

Thank you for always stopping by. Unfortunately, I have had to resort to reading the posts, upvoting and moving on. The best part of the posts is responding to them, but, I didn't even have enough internet to do that, so upped and read them. Boo!

I have finally gotten enough to post this #MarketFriday and will be better off on this leg of the journey!

No crowds, so that was pretty awesome, and yes, the freedom of movement/great prices were sweet! How can you look in the eye someone who is in a much less financial situation and not feel guilty when you barter down their worth? Now, if they are scalping you, just walk away, otherwise, pay up.

Thank you for stopping by and dropping your link! Always nice to see you!

Most days, for me, the sea calls and usually wins. Tho I do give the woodlands , field, and forest their fair do's on my daily walk. The one great aspect of our old friend The Sea, is in High Summer one can still enjoy the walk, whilst the woods only reward me with mosquito bites haha.

So, lovely and warm there and the colors! Now, this is an enviable #marketfriday @dswigle for sure.
To buy coconuts like this seems such a treat.
And I honestly never really thought Cuban cigars were that great, prefer a Dominican myself, but it's true, we want what we can't have.

I have done a market friday today as well, but I'm never sure if 'put link to post in #Marektfriday' means on YOUR blog? So, I hope this is appropriate. https://peakd.com/hive-196308/@donnadavisart/a-market-friday-at-a-local-cape-cod-antique-flea-market

My extended family wants warmth in the middle of winter. :) Darn New Englanders! LOL I am one of those New Englanders that love the one I am with. Whatever the weather, it'll be alright!

Buying the coconuts was a huge bonus and the colors were divine. I am appreciative of the lovely weather, although I actually like winter and activities in the snow.

I have done a market friday today as well, but I'm never sure if 'put link to post in #Marektfriday' means on YOUR blog?

Yes, it used to be a tag when all was right with the world and then they created communities, which I did so nobody else would take the Market community... an yet, I have not gone the whole way - but people are kinds and post here. Thank you for putting up with it! ❤️

What a lovely stop you had there, the colour of the sea… wow…
The houses are also so very colourful. Now I miss the Caribbean. Think we need to go soon again one day 🥰😊 hehehe

As long as the chilled coconuts did taste great, all good. Not everything needs to be a work of art, right 😉 it’s fun looking at how they prepare them.

Soon you are home again, and it is fun to buy gifts for friends and family.
Yes, hold on for the pure vanilla… much better 😎

Have a wonderful Friday Denise 👋🏻☀️🌺
Enjoy it all…

How true! The vibe is its own! The houses, the people, the food. Especially the conch! Still one of my favorite things to eat. The chilled coconut is one of the drinks I love, so refreshing and picked right off the tree.

It is insane, but, they do see tourists coming. Pure vanilla is different than most of the stuff they try to see. You can really tell the difference when you are baking.

Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving your Scottish link! :)

It sure is, I loved our time in the Caribbean.
Yes, conch… so delicate.
The best when it comes straight of a tree. Nothing like the packages in the supermarket hahaha 🤣

Luckily we are experienced traveler's and see through it very easily and know there are different products. I understand what you say. Pure ingredients make a difference. I love taking home spices and local food ingredients from my travels. (The once’s you can take that is) it makes such a difference in my cooking… 😊😎

You are welcome Denise, anytime. Sorry for my late reply, as you can imagine… lots happening and even less time now.

Yes. Nassau has the best Conch fritters, Conch soup, Conch everything … on the planet. We stay on Paradise Island (Sunrise Beach club….next to the Ocean Club) for a few weeks each year and we take the water taxi over to Nassau to this little restaurant where the locals get their conch… and it was the best ever. I’d add a little Tabasco to my fritters and soup and it was absolutely delicious. Now I’m craving conch fritters for lunch. Yum.

Exactly! All those little islands are pure heaven. Makes me wonder why I live so far North! Of course, who doesn't love a piece of the winter wonderland, I know I do, however, I will admit that there is nothing quite like having time in the Bahamas- especially in the dead of winter. Yes?

I really think they should have a HiveFest there in February! I think the attendance might go up even more than it already has! Let's not forget the conch they have there! Conch fritters are the bomb!!! Conch soup, conch stew! I am all in, every day for conch!!

Thanks for sharing the beauty!

Hello, Denise! What a paradise and what fun to walk through those streets full of stores. I'm so glad you're having a great time.

Not only does it look like paradise, it feels like it too. What a great combination! Life is so sweet some days, leaving me to think less of times that are not.

I know of Margarita Island, right off the coast there. Every tiny little island had these carved wooden animals and the kids always loved them! I loved watching the wood carvers create them.

There is much to be happy about, being surrounded by my siblings! Thank you so much for taking the time and joining the challenge! I hope your son is enjoying the big snow they just had! :)

I love the colorful houses! Don't they give off a happy vibe? I will show off more of the Bahamas in future posts, it has a little something for everyone.

I didn't buy any of the bracelets. They were not well made and were worth less than the $$2.50 they were asking. About the vanilla, it is not so much high quality (although it is high quality!) as it is pure vanilla. The cheaper vanillas add ingredients to stretch out the vanilla bean and it is truly noticeable in baking.

Thank you for the wonderful words!

@tali72 I wasn't thinking in that stream of thought, but, you are absolutely right! Until I found the pure vanilla, I was happy with the other extract. I never knew what I was missing... sometimes ignorance IS bliss. :)

I hope you had a wonderful weekend!

https://ecency.com/hive-196308/@samsmith1971/game-on-when-friendship-comes ... and now I'm gonna read your post and then I'll be back here in the comments 💗 !LUV ...

And I'm back... oh man, you are living the life at the moment hehe... how wonderful! To be able to take off all that time and just go sailing... or cruising !LOLZ. Those views are to die for, Denise! 💗... I so want to go to the islands in the Med and enjoy crystal clear waters like that. So pretty and ...well... clean 😂...compared to so many beaches around the world. I love how the little alleyways twist in that marketplace with the yellow buildings... reminds me of walking the street of Sienna or Rome. I hope you manage to find everything that you are looking for before you run out of market time hehe. I like to buy the more expensive vanilla too for baking... it's just so much nicer! !LUV !ALIVE !LADY

Hi, Sam! @samsmith

Aren't we all living the dream? Look at you, chauffering the Dreem team all over Scotland! It does remind one of the streets of so many places... Mexico, many places in South America, and so many that I don't recognize. I love when an alley springs into life and opens up another whole city within. I really had no big agenda, I just liked to wander the markets... of course, there is always something one cannot live without. Refreshing coconut water, for instance.

Pure vanilla is king and not so easy to find sometimes! The problem is that not all vanillas are made the same, even when they swear it is the best. :)

Thanks for the Luv, Alive and Lady tips! You are truly awesome!

I think it's the best way to explore really... to have...

no big agenda

When I travel, even locally, I generally have an idea of a few things I'd like to see/do but rarely schedule them!
!LOLZ I like to take each day as it comes so that I don't feel compelled to do something on any given day for which I may simply not be in the mood. And downtime should be carefree🤗😎 I love the way you do life! Cruising Denise-styel. 🙌💗... Now... how funny that both you and JJ both got my Hive name wrong this week 😂 Clearly I need to change something hahaha.

OMG! I did get your name wrong! That is punishment for tagging you in the comment. :) I do love having not a huge agenda, it makes life easier and opens up other opportunities I may have missed.

I admit to having some schedule, especially if I am in charge, then people can do or not do, up to them. Downtime has been carefree, surely I won't know how to act when I make my way back home!

Life is good, I won't deny it! 💗

Clearly I need to pay more attention, you are doing nothing wrong! :)

There she is!!!!!!!!!! Tootsie!! I never found your post last week hehehe I'm guessing you were underwater swimming with the fishies!! LOLOL lady - you're driving me insane! you know why??? in 23 days I AM going to be on a cruise ship - and i'm dyingggggggggggggg - i can't wait!!! and seeing all your pictures are getting me so so so very excited! hehehe

those bangles - were they worth it??? they looked so nice - but was it REALLY a steal? hehehe or were they cheap looking once they got you there! LOl

i loved that first "city within a city" description - i love places like that! where you feel like you're being whisked away into some secret place! hehehehe so fun those little treats on vacations!

and conch stew.
oh my gosh - i loved it. i had it in the Bahamas and yummmmmmm i love conch! it almost tastes kinda likea sweet clam - kind of meat - yeah???

so now you know - that in 3 weeks or so... i'll be stocking up on all my photos at every port to get ready to post some Market Friday posts for weeks!!!!!!! heheheheheh

and I'm so glad that you didn't lose your post! You should save it someplace first!!! that way if it doesn't go through you don't lose all your work. it is PAINFUL when that happens - honestly - i want to like... throw my computer through a wall hahahahaha so glad you got it posted

be safe Tootsie! enjoy your travels and i'll be joining you soon! hehehehe

oh - and here is my post. part 2 of London - and just one more post of London the next week! hehehe then we are moving OUT of london and onto more fun elsewhere! hahah

Tootsie!!! So good to hear from you!!! You are a much better traveler than I am. I get all mixed up in the family and between not having great internet, and having all of my family and extended family together, well, there is no time for Denise.

Last week, for the first time in forever! There was no #MarketFriday post. Worse, not enough internet at the right time to complain about it either. Oh, girl... you don't know that half of it.

London. How awesome! You have been really having a great time. to be fair, we both have! We are living life, yes? Are you taking the ship across the pond?

Squee!!!

I won't go back for a bit of time off for at least 37 days. So keep your poor friend in your thoughts as you enjoy your time afloat. Who will you be traveling with? How long will you be sailing the seas? The only reason I am going back is I got no real photos! I was with my brothers and sisters and it was their time. When I put it in perspective, we only come through this world one time and this time belongs to them. I love Hive and it makes my day to click on it, it brightens my day. But, when family calls, I'm theirs. Does that make sense? ❤️

Thank you for taking the time to post in #MarketFriday @dreemsteem ! Safe travels, my friend. I will be thinking of you as we set sail tomorrow - once again! For you! Off my balcony today!

and yep - when I was in London - it was just me and Sam and Pen! So no family to navigate hehehe

but this time? 18 of us! all family!!! LOLOL

so i'm HOPING to be able to do what I gotta do ,but guess what? I don't sleep at night hahahahahaha THAT'S MY SECRET! lol

i'm awake at like 2 am - so THAT is when I plan (its a plan... so ... you know how they go hahaha) to actually compile my posts into some semblance of postable content LOLOLOL

guess what - i have a balcony too! and i surely LOVE looking off the side of the ship and enjoying the sunset - and it looks like you do too!

look at that line in the ocean though??? is that just a difference of current?? that looks so cool! hheheh

have the BEST time - and did you say you're out there for another 37 days!?!?! SOMEDAY I SHALL DO THIS!!!! HEHEHE!!!!!

OK - go!! enjoy!!! no more replying back to me! just love on that family! hehehe

Ohhh nice place! Gaaah I miss the coconut! So rare to see them here. In my hometown, there are tons though. The place is somewhat similar to islands in the Philippines like Boracay. The vibes are almost the same.
Cuban cigars are so rare over here recently, I’m guessing the production or imports are not so high as before.
I like big t-shirts too! Would love that for a gift!

By the way, here’s mine for today’s #MarketFriday

It is so funny how all the females love big t-shirts to sleep in! That never gets old. Soft and oh-so-comfortable!

Cuban cigars are probably like that the world over. Imports got crazy during covid, in the US too and many things have outpriced themselves or no longer were available. Fuuny, the things we miss and took for granted, yes? The vibe is very much like Philipinnes! Do you miss home a lot? The warm balmy weather would be hard to not miss! The relaxed atmosphere too. They differences is like night and day.

You are so sweet!!! You joined the challenge!

That is a very picturesque first photo, such a paradise :) I'm glad you are enjoying yourself Sweetie :) I have never been on a cruise ship. It would be nice to be. My heart is longing for the sea too, and I miss it so much :)

The Bahamas is a breathtakingly beautiful island and I'd love to be there one day...

Here is my entry for #marketfriday 🙂, and have a lovely weekend @dswigle

Hello, Trang! @trangbaby It is always such a joy to see you here at #MarketFriday, or any other time! Oh, cruises are such a peaceful way to enjoy time off. There are some truly affordable prices when looking at cruises. Of course, they have built bigger ships to carry more people, making the cost better fro the pocketbook. I still prefer the smaller ships instead of going with 6,000 of your bet friends! but I have done that too.

I know you would like the Bahamas. Similar enough to Vietnam, yet a world of difference. Thanks again for dropping your link!

Wow, you are cruising in the Bahamas, I would want to do that too. I love the chilled coconut. Guys chopping coconut for the juice is so reminiscent of back home.

Beautiful photos! The color of the water is divine! Yes, I have tasted conch - way back in 1987 on a vacation to Grand Bahama. I did not care for it! My husband thought it was tasty! I do love all kinds of other seafood!

I think my tastes have changed or perhaps it was the way things were made? I never knew I like conch growing up, I thought it was okay, but not amazing. Now... I cannot wait to get there to feast on the stew, soup, and fritters... and almost anything else conch!

But, I get it. It is not for everyone and there are certain seafood people tend to like and others are only okay. If it swims for a living, I probably love it. I do love it as I get fish/seafood at least once a month for the last month.

Life is good!

All of these images look beautiful! I really like the one with the horse, since I hardly see horses pulling a carriage these days besides in the Amish. It's definitely a fun alternative to driving a car.

May I ask a question about the #MarketFriday challenge? My sisters' birthday was yesterday. Early that day, I went to a market to get her something nice. So I'm hoping to participate this friday if I get the post done in time. In the rules of the challenge, you mentioned this:

PLEASE Drop the link into the MarketFriday comment section so I can find it!!

Which MarketFriday comment section? I looked at the community but didn't understand this. Thank you for your time, @dswigle! 😊

I am not into collecting little cups of clocks or something that I don't really need. I would rather buy a teeshirt for someone, because who doesn't love a teeshirt?

Or a bath or beach towel, but I guess those take up too much space.

Never been to the Bahamas but definitely would like to visit one day, especially its beaches.
