Kindness and Pound Cake

(Edited)

When I was growing up, my mom used to talk about the small things that made a difference. Simple gestures that you didn't really notice, but, you could feel them, long after they were done. Little niceties. I think about it often. I have to wonder why the ritual of spending those wonderful Sunday afternoons visiting family has all but ceased to exist. Expecting to have some company that dropped in was a good reason to keep a pound cake baked most weeks, with something truly special during the holidays. That was when those visits were always expected. We spent enough time with the extended family that we knew their food preferences and personalities. I miss it. I really do. Knowing that others had this too brings me comfort. The world was a kinder, gentler place.

The day ends and I try to remember where all the hours went and what I did with my day. As always, it is the small things strung together that made my day. Most days really. One of my kids made dinner last night. It wasn't even that it was extravagant or unusual and by that, I don't mean it wasn't good. It was delicious. I loved it. Mostly because it was done for me. A nicety. I always make dinner, almost always. So when one of them shows kindness like that, it warms my heart. So very thoughtful. I am grateful for this day. Every day, in fact.

Okay, it was lasagne and it was more than delicious! I just didn't want anyone to get jealous. Know what I mean? And a perfect glass of vino paired with it.

I politely decline, never really wanting to give up, until she absolutely departs and takes up residence, in a place that does not include her. Oh, my summer, come back to where you belong! And yet, I can see her, fading off into the sunset of life.

It's best to let her go," he says. No, no, that's wrong. It's never right to give up on someone - Lauren DeStefano, Fever

Flowers. Always. To color my day. #alwaysaflower Let the sun shine in your life. Let joy touch your soul. And so I ask you if the sun shines in your soul, does it really matter if it rains outside? If you had asked me yesterday, as Washington, DC was raining cats and dogs, right before my very eyes, I might have said, yes!! It matters. But, oh, what a difference a day makes! For, in the end, I found, it really doesn't matter at all. Nobody can take my sunshine away

Oh, to feel thankful, I am thankful for the strangers that I encounter through daily living. Their gifts ripple out upon the spiritual waters of the earth and uplift the bond of our shared humanity. People make the world go round. Oh, yes. I love you. I do.

20221004_090002.jpg

All I have are my words, armed in my mind, written in pen, stand by stand. Oh, yes. Still by hand. It has a different feel. Altered not by keys, backspace, and delete, I write, erase, tear it to pieces and start all over again. And again.

It’s my way. I walk out to the deep end of the page and dive right in.

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer’s lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimmed,
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature’s changing course untrimmed:
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st,
Nor shall death brag thou wander’st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st,
So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

Shakespeare

Each time I'm in the fast lane, my dad always pulls me back to tell me, "son, in this life, it's the little things that matter". What eventually counts for happiness is not one instantaneous pound of kindness. However, it's an accumulation of little acts of kindness. Life is more beautiful when we appreciate and cherish the little things.
Also, no act of kindness is too small to make another's day. You might just be the spark someone else needs.
Thanks for this @dswigle

Okay, it was lasagne and it was more than delicious!

And it is very filling. At least for me. I also ate lasagne. Not today, not yesterday, but a few months ago. I still remember it. I rarely eat lasagne, but I like it very much. There is a restaurant on the first floor of the bus station of Szolnok, Hungary. I ate the lasagne (and a few other foods) there. They have very delicious/tasty foods.

There is another restaurant, a few streets away. Bar-Bár Street Food. Probably they have the most deliciius pizzas in the whole Szolnok. I will introduce it later in one of my Market Friday foods.

Have a nice day. All the best. Greetings and much love from Hungary.

Truth! It is very filling, every time I eat it. It is one of those foods that is meant to stick to your ribs. I have actually never eaten lasagne out, but, if I didn't make it, I would.

That will make a great post, one that has delicious pizze in it. I do love pizza. It happens to be one of my favorite food groups. :)

Thanks so much for stoping by and leaving your words! Have a great rest of your day!

Oh... I do wish to hold onto summer and not let go. I thought the other day about the end of last winter and how it felt like the warm sunny weather would never get here.... and now....it is fading again already. Can't believe some of the nights have already been in the 40s ! no... NO ! It's nearly a week into October now, but I have to say I cannot remember a year when I was tempted to turn the heat on before the end of September. Normally I am trying not to turn it on before November, but in the 2nd half of October I finally cave, even if it is just one time here or there to take the sharpest chill off.

We have had milder winters the last 2 or 3 years, so this earlier coolness is making me wonder if this winter will be "pay back" I hope not.....but only time will tell that.

Love your flowers as always and that lasagna with some many noodley layers looks scrumptious !

The little things certainly can make a day. Just yesterday I got a message from my sister Vicky, right before I clocked off of work for lunch, that there was homemade persimmon pudding on the bench on my back porch. Mom had made it the day before and my sister had brought some back to me when she came back to town from a visit. Yum! Yum! ....it was a yummy little thing. It certainly DID make the day better.

There certainly did seem to be more family visiting back in the day. My Grandmother would always bake something on Saturday, a cake or a pie, mostly cake though and it was marked to be cut first as dessert for Sunday lunch. We use to go to her house nearly every Sunday evening for sandwiches or a light supper and then of course, the leftover dessert was there to be shared. Those were certainly the days.... and I loved them !

I did too! Living away from family changed things for me, but, never that feeling. It was there when I went home to visit, and even right up until my mom passed away. She was Sunday dinner. She was so old school that way. I feel like so many things have changed in how the family is viewed. So many of my older relatives are gone, not all, but key players.

We have had the mild winters too. Hasn't really snowed in three years. I hope it doesn't try to make that all up. Okay, it will be three years, so technically it is two.

I almost never use the heat. I have a gas fireplace and snap it on when I am chilly. It does a great job! I never sleep with the heat on, it hadn't been getting that cold and I have an electric blanket to heat the sheets up. :) After that, I want it cool. I Love to sleep in the cool.

Oh, your sister has such a beautiful soul. That is so fun here to do those things! Is she the one that brought you flowers from the flower farm? Did I already tell you that because of that, I looked in my own community and that is how I found the Lavender Farm and Sunflower farm? I thought I did, but, you know how that goes. I could have dreamed it. So, in case I didn't, Thank you! You deserve all sorts of nice things to happen to you because you are so kind to everyone. ❤️

Well, I should go have lunch and then think about putting together #MarketFriday... It is that time of the week,

Thanks for stopping by!

I know it is because I've been lucky enough to live so long and the things that WERE are the things that made my "growing up" years wonderful. It did seem like families were close, even extended family.

I have been totally happy with less harsh winters. I figured it wouldn't last, but that was one changed I would be happy to accept if winter stayed milder.

I do use my heat when it is cold. I have no fireplace or the such. I usually program my thermostat to help me save. I make it go down to 63 at night which means it rarely comes on if the house was decently warm when I went to bed. During the week I have it where it doesn't run as much while I am working because I close the door to my workroom and if needed, have a small heater to knock the chill off. Had to learn to work with it once my job came home. The thing is, I do NOT like being cold. I consider being cold suffering and I am not going to do it as long as I can afford to pay my bill. :)

Yes... my sister Vicky is the one that brought the flowers too. I'm happy that my stories helped you find the lavender and sunflowers. You did mention it before and I was happy to be a part of it. You have done some very nice posts about the lavender and sunflowers. You're Welcome ! 😊

Now it's FriYay ! No OT this weekend, so I'm excited for it to be here.

Woo hoo! A weekend to call your own! I know you know about how we were brought up. I have to think that if I lived close to family once again, it would be the same, but, the key players are older or have passed... that in itself changes everything. Even if one of you took up the reigns, it is never the same, but, thankfully, we have made out own that my kids seem to feel like it is special.

I guess that is one of the things I hoped for, that I could give them a piece of what I had.

I use my heat when it gets cold too, but, I have a huge tolerance for cold. In fact, I like to be cooler and have run on the warm side for a long time. Not, that, silly. I am just always making heat. I blame it on all the exercise I get. Keeps my thermostat up. I don't like being cold but rarely am I. However, I do have one daughter that is perpetually cold, so we keep the heat boosted for her when she is home. I wouldn't want to live in an uncomfortable house, and so. But, the heat is never on when the house is sleeping. I have to say that the house holds heat really well, so it is enough. I am in agreement with what you said. As long as I can afford to be comfortable, I will be. I would like to think that all this working and saving will pay off. Ha!

It is FriYay! Whoop! Whoop! I am excited too and I don't have any firm plans yet! :)

Dinner cooked by someone else is always good. There is something about cooking food yourself that makes it have no taste 😂. It's unfortunate for me because I'm the cook in the house haha.
That lasagna looks really good though. 👍

Ditto! I am the cook in the house, but, I have two girls that love to oook. They are pretty good at it too. One coods all things Asian, better than most restaurants and the other one loves to cook. I think that means I can quit that job, yes?

It does not have a taste! I think it comes from your sense of smell being on sensory overload.

The lasagna always has homemade noodles in our house. We love making pasta. It really enhances the sauces. Good morning from here! I hope you are having a great day!

Awe man, here I thought I was going to get pictures of pound cake to drool over! I love pound cake. That lasagna looks pretty delish. You can tell they put a lot of time into it with all of the layers. We usually only have like one or two layers of noodles. Just quicker to make I guess!

Oh, the pound cake! Next time! :) I do have a coffeecake I made this morning. Will that do? The lasagne was amazing, and the layers are purposely made to trap the sauce. We always make our own pasta, and it is made paper thin which is why it has a lot of layers as opposed to one or two. I also don't use ricotta cheese but use a bolognese sauce.

Anyway, thank you so much for stopping by and always leaving such positive comments. :)

I hope you have a great day!

That makes a lot of sense. We have talked about making out own pasta in the past, but we have never really gotten around to it. I don't like a ton of ricotta, so that sounds just about perfect to me!

There is no ricotta at all! It is an all-meat sauce with tons and tons of flavor! If you make it once, it will own you!

Bolognese.

You are so right: as much as I love cooking, there is something about having someone else cook just for me. That lasagne looks divine!

It's true, isn't it? I think its because love drives it. :) Bolognese sauce. Gets me every time. I ski the ricotta and go for the good stuff!

Did you see how I called you, Kat? @generikat I all but put out your name on the post. Next time you want me, you know to call me with food. :) We are so predictable, aren't we?

Kidding, although, I seem to respond well with food. We do love our pasta here in the house. We love making it too. I have totally spoiled them and now, they spoil me some days. I get to have leftover lasagne tomorrow. I made Tuscany soup tonight. It was too warm out for it, but, I loved it anyway.

Thanks so much for stopping over! Always good for visit! Mwah! ❤️

We must be thankful for every single day. I have taken good days for granted, but I have certainly learned the error of my ways. Great shots!

A delicious meal always makes all the difference :) ... And for many in this world, it's still a big thing...

By letting Summer go, you will gain Fall :) Nothing wrong with that?
