From the Streets of Charleston: Market Friday

avatar

When I think about Charleston, it brings visions of everything French, rich in history, a major Atlantic port, and steeped in southern-centered culture, wandering on those cobblestoned streets, doing the market tour, it takes up the entirety of Old Town. Check out these bike taxis. They are all animated characters with historical knowledge. The walking tour too. You can rough it yourself, it is an easy town to walk, flat as a pancake! But, you will miss out on the best tidbits of historical importance. A four-hundred-year history, sprinkled with personal knowledge.

Charleston.jpg

I went to Charleston, South Carolina last month with a couple of colleagues, one of which had never been there. Oh, a first-time visitor to Charleston, We would do a walking tour which will be in detail in another post. Today I am interested in getting some salsa and perhaps a basket from the market. I need to flag down a bike taxi! Wait! There are three of us. So, $30.00 for ten minutes? That seems a bit steep. He is humorous, but, not $30 or $40 dollars worth.

$7 PER PASSENGER PER 10 MINUTES ($14 MINIMUM PER RIDE)
SINGLE PASSENGERS: $10 PER 10 MINUTES
BIKE TAXIS FIT 1-3 PASSENGERS

In the last post I did on Charleston, I showed a lot of horse-drawn carriages. I wasn't a fan of them because the carriages had upwards of 10-20 people on board. It wasn't what I was expecting. I really was interested in history, and my experience is that many of the people going are not, just to ride and snap pictures. Most times it is okay. I wanted to enjoy the historic carriage ride, but we were short on time. I think we may just stroll through for today and come back tomorrow for a mini-tour.

Location: The Historic Downtown Charleston District
Capacity: Up to 16 passengers, although it will do private tours
They last about an hour.

Available daily, from 9 am to 5 pm. It is actually seasonal, as it is warm for most of the year, but, as it is on the water, it can get chilly in the winter. It leaves every 15-30 minutes. It Starts 1 block from the Charleston City Market, which is where we are headed later, at 14 Anson St.

Welcome to the Pepper Palace!
http://www.pepperpalace.com/
Phone number (843) 834-2191
84 A N Market St Charleston, SC 29401
It's in the French Quarter!

It is 100% peppers! A great place to look for that little something from Charleston and the people who work there are knowledgeable - all things peppers. I did get a few. And sampled everything! Well, not everything, but, again, Charleston is all about the free samples. It was wonderful and I was confident in what I was buying.

20221113_104007.jpg

Just say NO! I promise you, you won't be sorry. They have to keep it locked up because some young crazy people feed it to their unsuspecting friends. I know, I can't see that happening either, but, it does. It says ask for samples, but I will leave you with a piece of advice: Just say NO!

20221113_103853.jpg

If you buy five of those, they should give you one for free. I like it hot, but, I have been challenged here. Few have been hotter, but there will be no complaints. I do like the fact that you can mix or match anything in the store.

20221113_104022.jpg

A quick exit will bring you out to the street once again, with promises to pick up our hot sauce later in the afternoon. I like the fact that they will hold merchandise for you so you don't have to lug it all around town. Nice? Indeed.

Free Praline samples! Have you noticed a trend with Charleston? Everywhere has free samples! Now, I will be the first to admit that their pralines are a little pricey, but, they are that good. On occasion, it would be fun, but, I promise you, they are addicting! Pralines are sweet confections made primarily of sugar, nuts, and butter. Don't let that scare you!

I actually came to the market only for the baskets, but, it looks like she is almost out. I might have to ask her to make one and mail it to me. I probably won't be back down until early spring. This market is blocks and blocks long. It crosses streets and continues.

That carriages, there is a park here in the city that offers that kind of experience but yeah, kinda expensive too. Hmm, maybe will visit it next time and share it here.

Jalapeno Jam? I heard a jalapeno flavor for ice cream but haven't tried yet? So it ws kinda spicy too?

It is definitely spicy but in a good way. :) It is commonly poured over cream cheese and used as an appetizer spread or used to put on a sandwich, especially a panini or grilled cheese.

So many uses. :)

Thanks for dropping by and have a great day!

A few years ago, there was such a taxi was walking in Pakistan as well. I think the price of bike taxi is too expensive. Every Friday market is held in Pakistan. Friday market is cheaper than other markets. Many people buy the necessities of life from the Friday market. Next Friday i will show Pakistan Friday market in my blog.

Don't forget to drop the link here if you do! :)

The bike taxis are expensive, I think. The minute you jump on, it is an automatic $14 - even if you go right down the street. Wow!

In many places in the world, the markets are cheaper on Friday. Not so much in the US. They do have sales and specials, but that is every week and the sale lasts for the week or sometimes only four days. I would like a Friday sale!

Thanks for stopping by.

You are not alone in not liking spicy. I would guess that more people don't like it as opposed to liking it. For the most part, it seems cultural... but then, it wouldn't make sense as to why I love it. :)

Thank you so much for being a part of the challenge and dropping your link! Have a wonderful day!

In many countries, many things are discounted on Fridays sales. People can buy easily what they want.

0

That is true, except not here in the US. While there may be weekend sales of a few items being cheaper, it is to draw people into the store. The items are leader items, items they are willing to take a loss on.

Perhaps on Soft drinks, expensive cuts of meat, things that you can usually live without but they are tempting items for some.

Thanks for stopping by!

Wow it all looks like so much fun there!

AND hot. very VERY HOT...on the sauce and nasal napalm too...

And it reminds me a lot of New Orleans too!

And would you believe it- but there's my last name there too....

Like New Orleans, Charleston is so much fun. Except for the Baudry behavior in “New or-lins” The same architecture in some places, and most of it has been kept intact, adding some new but keeping the original intact.

One of the reasons I love it.

I have to be honest. I love it hot, but, I left the nasal napalm at the store. :) Is your last name there too? Did I miss something? :)

Always great to see you here!

Hi there, @dswigle. 😃 Charleston town looks neat and lovely. You still have horse-drawn carriages? Or its used to take tourists around, may be get a historical feel of the place? Your pictures are fine.

Here is my submission of the last minute shopping I did before Christmas. I was unable to post until now. 😊😊

Charleston is a very lovely town and you are right, the horse-drawn carriages give a historical feel to it, dressing it up a bit. I like that they have kept intact more of the buildings from the beginning of time and added new structures to the empty spaces.

Thank you for dropping your link. It is fine that it is a Christmas market. I still have one or two I will probably post. We can't always post timely. :)I know I cannot. Thanks again and have a great day!

Free samples are the way to do it! There are places I know where there are enough free samples to almost have a meal!

The bike taxi's remind me of the rickshaws that run - literally - around downtown Calgary. Really neat to see.

Free samples are definitely the way to go!! These are endless, everywhere you go. You need to make sure you don't fill up or you won't have room for the next ones.

It is crazy, but, if you lived there, you would never have to buy food.

They actually have rickshaws there too. I think they are fun, but take them only if someone I am with has never been on one. Or if I am feeling silly. I went on a rickshaw in Toronto... Now I have to think. It was one of the major cities and it surprised me. Washington, DC has rickshaws too.

I even put a fire hydrant in there for you - but when I looked back, I realized I cropped it out. 🤣

I wonder, is it because of the season or everything has a sample and you can get one more free for buying more, like the hot pepper bottle? It would be so cool if it's a normal thing.

I didn't get what a praline was until I googled it...never seen or tasted one. But with the way you put it, they must be pretty amazing in Charleston.

Do you actually stay in Charleston? 'cause it seems like you travel a lot.

Free samples are a normal thing for Charlestown, especially in the Old Town or French Quarter of the town. I love it every time I go there and can just go around to places, trying things out to see if they would be something that I like.

Pralines are heavenly!! There are two places that I love to buy them: New Orleans and Charleston. Praline heaven. Other places make them and they are good, but, in my opinion, these are the best!

Charleston is a place I visit a few times a year, but, I do not live there. I do travel a bit, less because of Covid. Many businesses are still telecommuting part-time and during office hours some days.

Thanks for dropping by!

Now, you make me wanna come live there in Charlestown. Would it be wrong to do so because of free stuff and Praline? I'm sure you'll be one my side.

I am actually Nigerian, and I do not have the slightest idea on Praline, but you make me long for it now.

Now I get it. You're not from Charlestown, but the it knows you too well. That's awesome.

Funny that I even just made my first entry into #MarketFriday. And from this little convo with her owner, I know she loves me. Thank you, @dswigle

Not at all, I visit there for the free things! No, I am kidding! :) But, yes, I agree.

It is a great place to live and once you taste the golden yumminess of a Praline, you will want to make them yourself, just so you can always have them. They really are delicious.

It does know me well, I travel through there a few times a year and it is nice every single time. I hope you have a wonderful day!

What a wonderful visit to the south Denise 👋🏻😊
A tour is always great, one can learn so much. I join some… but it all depends where we are traveling too.
Some places it is not needed. Some definitely 😉

That pepper Palace looks dangerous… I’m a wimp hahaha can’t take any heat hahaha 🤣 so I will skip hot and spicy things.

So great you can try first, before you buy everywhere there. 😎 Than you definitely know if you want something or not. Thanks for sharing this post with us.

Thank you so much @dswigle, and to you too; Happy New Year to you and yours 🎉🎉🎉🎉 all the best wishes!

I posted today an update:

Yes, I have finally been cut free a bit more to travel. I have to agree with you on the tours. I do like some of the historical towns where the people can actually add their personal touch in the history. Especially when the town is still filled with relatives of the first inhabitants. That is pretty cool on this side of the pond. It is more normal in some sections of Europe.

Pepper Palace is definitely not for the faint of heart. But, they do have lesser spice on some of their blends. They usually have degrees of spice. I like spicy, but, not so much if it burns off the taste buds. :) I need to have the flavor come through, not just the pepper. What fun is that?

I look forward to the update! Not going as planned?? Tell me it isn't so!? You do live an exciting life, Jackie! 💙 Thank you for stopping by and leaving your link!

That’s great Denise, so happy for you. Enjoy the travels 😊
Yes, a local can tell you so much more… wonderful to see their love for a place and their enthusiasm 🥰
Cool to see it on that side of the pond.

Funny thing, I can’t even do the lowest degree hahaha 🤣 I love herbs and spices though… I use them as much as I can in every dish, but not spicy 🌶 things.
I can imagine, you still want to taste the rest of the food and it’s nuances 😉

Have fun reading it 🤓 I won’t tell you all now hehehe 🤭 but; Nothing bad luckily… as in the move bad, still on course for that… just became ill 🤒 again… and stopped me for this whole week 😔 recovering now 🤓 slowly… 🤞🏻🍀
Oh I have an exciting life indeed… we plan on traveling further end of next week. But I haven’t planned accommodation along the way of the journey or a rental yet hahaha 🤣 working on it. Hope all is sorted mid next week.

Anytime dear Denise, have a wonderful evening @dswigle 🤗🤗

Wow, this is an amazing place! I like that there is a choice in the types of excursions. it would be very interesting to drive and listen to what the guide on that horse cart tells. Ha ha they warn you to ask for a sample of hot sauces first. 😁 It's probably really spicy. and it's great that you can leave your purchase with them to pick it up later. I think I would love it! 😃

It is a really nice place that I like to go to. There are some places I really like to go and listen to the tours, I learn so much from them. Then, there are the ones that you do better doing a self-tour, using materials they give you. I have been to both and I think it depends on where you are.

My only problem sometimes is knowing which one would be best. We like taking our time and really enjoying the place and some tours are on a high-speed chase to finish. :)

They do warn you about the really hot sauces! I was pleased that I didn't have to carry my purchase all day, but, come back later to pick it up. I think it is a place that you and your husband would have fun at.

Thanks for stopping by and dropping your link! Have a wonderful weekend!

usually we rarely take such excursions. my husband usually reads a lot about the place where we will go before the trip, and therefore he is well oriented on the spot and knows what interesting things can be seen there. but somehow we were lucky to have guides who really love their city very much, know it well and tell a lot of interesting information. Walking with them on such excursions was a great pleasure!

We have a store near where I work that has a wall of hot sauce like that. They have a little bit of everything. They are also one of he three cheese shops in the town I work in, so that is pretty special too. Charleston keeps coming up as one of the places that we should maybe go for our Spring Break. I am not sure we will make it there this year. Our schedule got cut back a little bit. I still haven't settled on a place yet.

I love cheese shops and used to do a tour of Wisconsin (mostly) to find new cheese places. Oh!! Cheese shops are another place that gives free samples! Cheese is another one of those things that are better when you select one that you know you will love!

Charleston hasn't changed much since its beginning, so whenever you go, it will be perfect timing. I will say it is nicer in the early, early spring, and late fall. I went last in November, right before Thanksgiving. Still shorts weather. I used to think it was deadly in the summer. Okay, just hot!

Too bad your schedule got cut back, but, nowadays, I am happy to see some time off and away from home. I am sure you will select a great place. You always find some new adventure! I look forward to it.

I'm not a fan of spicy, it just doesn't go well with my stomach.

I really liked the free samples, here in Venezuela it is not customary to give free samples unless it is to buy cheese, ham and similar things. Occasionally they place counters in supermarkets with new products of certain brands for customers to try, but it is not that common.

Here is my participation:

https://peakd.com/hive-196308/@gabrieladifazio/exploring-the-newly-opened-more-x-less-supermarket-esp-eng

A new supermarket was opened on Margarita Island, where one of the largest supermarkets used to be located but stopped operating several years ago. We were full of expectations and many of them were met, I think it will be an excellent option for shopping because it has everything.

Many people don't enjoy spicy, for much the same reason.

The free samples is a normal thing for them, in almost every shop. How nice for everyone! When purchasing something, there is no making mistakes. The supermarket here in Washington, DC also has free samples, but, much like yours, not all the time and usually to introduce a new product.

I love your little island! I am sure that during Covid, it might have been a little bit of a challenge, but, in normal life, what a wonderful place to live!

A new supermarket!! That is awesome news! Thank you for dropping the link!

Seems you had a nice tour of this city ! It really does feel like a crossroads of many cultures and traditions and that's just it ! This free sample habit is quite interesting, even sociologically speaking ^^

Mmmh, the pralines ! How can one resist ?

Thank you for this beautiful walk by your side and in advance, I wish you a beautiful year 2023 !

When the opportunity comes to visit Charleston, I go. It is a very Southern, laid-back existence there. A person could disappear into the crowd or be part of the decorations. It is all in what you want.

I have to agree on the free samples, although that is very common here in the US when you go to bigger supermarkets. They hand out many samples as they introduce new products, or one is on sale. These smaller, privately owned stores depend on sales and I believe the logic used for all the free samples is pure genius. I would definitely buy something (if I like it) partly out of guilt. How could I eat samples and then not buy them? I actually went to a cookie shop there, they bake them fresh all day long. Every single person that was there in the hour I spent at the shop (or outside the shop, there was a cafe) bought cookies. Every one. Same at the spicy sauce shop. I may be wrong, but, it was interesting to watch. Oh! We are so predictable.

One can absolutely not resist pralines, nor should they. :)

Thank you always for being a part of the challenge! Happy New Year to you! I appreciate you dropping the link!

Hey there @dswigle ✌🏼!

I hope the end of year rejouissances went nicely :) When I will come in America for the first time, I would love to visit this part of the country !

It’s indeed a super marketing and psychological technic ! Who can someone try something for free and not buy at least a bit more ? Or else he didn’t like it, it’s sure it work about a sort of guilt and a reciprocity... Many lessons to be learned in other aspects of life !

I wish you a very Happy New Year 2023 ! Best wishes to you and family 😘

I hope I’ll manage to answer quickly this year haha !

Oh, dropping in is not in any way an issue, but a joy instead. It's my first time, but I already visited some new friends in the community.

Thank you!

You obviously had a great time at Charleston, can't wait to see the subsequent post you'll write on tour your tour around it....

This store looks cool and the ideas of buying five and get one free is surely a great business idea that'll make people wants to buy more just to get something free. I mean who doesn't like free things 😀.

Compliment of the season to you, I hope you had a wonderful Christmas, I wish you a happy new year in advance..

Thank you for asking, Christmas was lovely and I hope yours was as well. Happy New Year!!! May 2023 be good fto us! Thank you for dropping your link!

We have rickshaws here in Washington, DC and it feels so out of place to me! :)

A plants shop? That is awesome! Thanks for dropping the link!

I could see needing some of that ice cream after the free samples of hot sauce lol! I admit I am a sucker for a tasty, albeit not overly hot, sauce. I would love to spend some time in a shop like that!

I got my MF post done before the bell and am dropping the link!

Right? The ice cream shop was packed, even though it was 10 o'clock in the morning! I have to wonder which of those shops went in first? The free samples in that town could keep a family of five fed for the week. I kid you not.

Oh, someday you will mosey on down the road and visit it. Take one of their historical tours as there is so much to see and it gives a broad picture of it all, then go back a delve deeper into some of it.

Thanks for putting a #MarketFriday together for the challenge.

I hope that you get to ride on the carriage the next time you go there. It will be so fun like reliving the olden times. I am fascinated too and play those sounds in the background in an app.

It is great that they have samples so we know what we are getting. Did I just see peach and blueberry pepper? Wow, I have never seen any flavoured pepper here where I am. That is an interesting combination. I guess they add the fruits in them for the extra touch.

It is an interesting combination, for sure, but it really calls attention to the sweetness and hot of it. I like it used as a dip or even on toast or crackers. That is one of the reasons I like the free samples! If I didn't care for it, I wouldn't be stuck with a whole jar of it!

Thanks so much for stopping by and dropping your link!

Wow, Charleston looks like a picturesque historical town. Lovely vibes. But I´m actually not a fan of those horse carriages. I can see just one horse pulling this giant carriage with so many people on it. Poor animals :(

Thanks for hosting the legendary Market Friday series Denise!

The historicl elements in the town have not changed much since its beginning. As you know, I am a huge horse lover, and although I am not opposed to a working horse, this is not working, nor natural.

It is a lovely little town, minus the horse carriages. They have taken a lot of heat over it.See here

Thank you for the huge tip!

I couldn´t even watch it or read it... Poor horse collapsing under the scorching sun and weight of ignorant tourists. No, thank you... Here in Prague or in Krakow, the carriages are much smaller and pulled by 2 horses instead of just one but I still don´t like it as it still seems like animal abuse to me. Cannot even image what the poor animals had to withstand in Charleston :( I do hope things have improved significantly since that case...

Things have improved since that case and tourists are quick to report even a sniff of abuse, including overloading the carriages. The weight is checked on a daily basis. (I hope they still do that) and I wouldn't hesitate to report them. As a note, the prices have gone up, and the carriages are with fewer people. I thought it might be covid, but, it is not. They are being monitored (thankfully) and forced into that position. To be fair, there are carriages that take good care of their horses and their wellbeing, but, to me, trotting on the hot pavement, be it cobblestones or pavement is hard on a horse.

Charming old city market with entrepreneurs filling the shops with tasty treats or hand made goodies, the kind of place to explore on foot.

Sounds like you had loads of fun Denise, thanks for sharing this historical market.

Wishing You and Yours a magical New Years Eve from Durban.

Thank you so much, Joan! @joanstewart Charleston is a lovely town with so much history, some good, some bad, just like everywhere else. They still manage to come away, blending their different cultures in a harmonious way.

Thank you for being a constant face in the #MarketFriday challenge. Your presence is always appreciated, as is your support. Plus, we just like you a lot. ❤️

Thank you for the wishes and I hope you are enjoying your New Year!!

A place were cultures, arts and music blend in harmony of peoples from many places. History of the region with much to see and do, good and bad as always.

A place a young friend visited when over there, felt very much at home when visiting/staying with ex-pats from South Africa.

Happy New Year, look forward to seeing #MarketFriday grow from strength to strength.

I like hearing stories like that, Joan! @joanstewart !

It is a complex mix of cultures that blend nicely to form what is today.

It seems risky, that pepper Palace. I try to avoid hot and spicy foods because I am such a wimp and cannot handle the heat. It's nice that you can test everything before buying it, as a result of which you can be sure if you want it or not.
An excellent method to learn is to take a tour!
Thanks for sharing, lovely @dswigle.

I really love hot and spicy, although, I still like to taste the food, so I like it to enhance the food, not burn my sinus. :) There is a happy medium, yes?

I do love their free sample policy, it makes it better for people as they liked what they tasted, more likely to come back and buy or order it online.

I love to do tours the first time I visit someplace, it gives me a sense of what it is like.

Thank you for coming by and leaving your words @silversaver888

Happy New Year to you!

I like just enough spice to perk up my taste buds and enjoy the flavor of the food, such as in Chinese food, Mexican food, and Japanese food.
#marketfriday is very interesting. I have been working these past two months on projects related to year-end work and have been unable to go out. And when I do, I forget to take photos! ARRGH!!! I hope next year will be better!
May your new year begin with God’s blessings. I pray that the upcoming year will be nice and beautiful for you and your family. May He lead you to the things that you deserve. Best wishes for the new year 2023.
