I am bringing you back to Charleston for #MarketFriday to one of the places that are a worthy stop whenever I am local. Byrd's Famous Cookies! 71 S Market St, Charleston, SC 29401
(843) 492-6312

Be Thankful. Thank you. I hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving! For the first time, ever, I didn't host the traditional Thanksgiving meal. I was still far and away, but, now I am back again. I'd like to think I appear as grateful as I feel for all that is given/gifted to me, for the little things in life,

As we express our gratitude, we must never forget
that the highest appreciation is not to utter words,
but to live by them.

#WeInterruptThisMessageToBringYouMarketFriday!!

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's me!!) In keeping with the Thanksgiving holiday that I missed, I chose to start off by giving thanks for my wonderful life, surrounded by amazing people, loving every minute of it, and loving you back... an extremely therapeutic experience Join me as we share our markets across the globe. I always look forward to seeing what you send me! It is amazing to see the different markets and cultures of our friends here on Hive. I have been pleasured by all of you, as you send in the most wonderful posts. Going places, doing things, buying merchandise. I have been surprised by many, not being familiar with the culture and I must say that it has been such an educational experience for me in so many ways and I hope for you also. This week I am taking you to a Christmas store in Charleston, South Carolina. One that sells Christmas all year long. My favorite kind of store in the middle of summer I had been there before, but, dropped from my sight. A few days ago. I was walking down the street and what appeared before my very eyes? Yes! Cookies!!

20221113_111601.jpg

People are nice, but I find that generally, people ARE nice. I was obviously not from there, my obvious sunburn put me off their map. It is deep fall and it was definitely short weather. I forget they are very south and on the Atlantic coast. I got the facts about Charleston and I get them every time I darken the door to the city. Which is fine. I like brushing up on the facts. It is a fun little place to take a day or three and introduce yourself, or reintroduce yourself, whichever the case may be. A few hard and fast facts:

Charleston was the fourth largest city in colonial America and the wealthiest
Charleston had the first public college, museum, and playhouse in the U.S.
The first golf club in America was established in Charleston in 1787.
North America’s longest cable-stayed bridge, the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, spans the Charleston Harbor, connecting historic Charleston and Mount Pleasant.
Dr. Alexander Garden, a Charleston physician, first imported “Cape Jasmine” from South Africa in 1754. The flower was renamed “Gardenia” - after Dr. Garden, of course.

Please leave the link to your post in the comment section, so it can easily be found by others. They will all be in one place. Where else can you take such a quick trip around the globe? Thank you! ❤

Flowers. There must always be flowers to color my world. This picture is dedicated to all of you, my beautiful friends. I put out flowers early tonight as I almost forgot the other day!

Byrd's is an institution. They have giant jars of cookie samples. They will feed you all day long if you want. Step right up and get your sample. I am sure that you will be buying this delectable pop-in-your-mouth- sized cookies. You won't leave here without them. They are quite addictive. I am always surprised that I buy several prepackaged cookies and none ever make it home. This time, they did. One bag, but, better than normal. Have you ever been to a bakery that you love?

20221113_110503.jpg

The cookies are tiny but, don't judge a book by its cover, they taste great! You need to check out the lemon or key lime in their citrus selection, they are really different! Samples are always offered and since the pandemic, they have had someone dispensing the samples, and they are always patient and will offer you, everyone, they have.

20221113_111547.jpg

I actually brought home salted caramel cookies, but, I also got a box (see picture above) and filled it with scotch oatmeal, chocolate chip, key lime, and praline. I probably put different ones in there also, but I don't remember which. They carry gluten-free too.

20221113_111551.jpg

The prices are a little steep for cookies, but, they do make a great gift and for goodness' sake, I cannot stop eating them. You can purchase them for (4) 8oz bags of cookies for $25.00 I sampled some Toasted Pumpkin Cookies. The free samples make it so much easier to select the ones you want Thank you so much for stopping by and reading through #MarketFriday!.

Something I buy very rarely as a treat for the family, coconut cookies made with butter, they simply don't go very far when arriving in the home.

These look and sound delicious to say the least.

Oh, divine! Coconut cookies! (and coconut cake) Cookies and sweets are a special treat in our family. Thankfully, I don't live close to here, with free samples being thrown at you.

Some of the flavors are savory and some are sweet. Both are my favorites. 😁 Thanks so much for stopping by! 💙

Savory would be up my alley, sweet the rest of the family.

Although thinking back my Dad used to bake what we called Hertzogkoekies with his homemade jam. You will have to ask @lizelle for her best recipe, these are simply.... Oh yes delicious!

Hertzogkoekies are prepared from a pastry base with an open top that is filled with apricot jam. It is topped with a desiccated or grated coconut meringue topping and baked

Thanks for walk down memory lane, your shops are quaint still run in old family style making them all the more interesting.

Thank you!! I will ask @lizelle for her best recipe! Hertzogkoekie sounds almost Dutch? Apricot jam? And meringue! I am totally in!

The shops are still run family style, that is the fifth generation owning it, since the 1750s I really admire that kind of dedication and family working together to create lives.

Thanks, again, Joan! @joanstewart

That is so sad, yet the same here. It took a lot out, but, people have a new appreciation for them and it seems we have new pop-ups trying to make a go of it. I know I try to support these places. I wish them the best.

I bought szaloncukor in the previous few days. Generally we (Hungarians) usually decorate the Christmas tree with it. I also like to buy a few more packs to eat them. And of course after the Christmas we remove the decoration, and eat those too. Usually we eat multiple kilograms of Szaloncukor every year around Christmas. Currently I do not know whether it is available in the USA, or not, but it is worth to look for it. Probably you would love it too.

!LUV.

Have a nice day. All the best. Greetings and much love from Hungary.

It is candy and because I grew up with some Hungarians in my town, I am familiar with it, and yes! They did decorate with it, all the while the kids would eat from the tree. :) We can still get them here and are still popular with the Hungarians we have here in the States. They ones I still know anyway.

We do some of the traditional German Christmas cookies, lubkunchen. I love them and we hang them on the tree for decorations.

Christmas is such a nice time of year~

Greetings from Washington, DC

Good to read this. I read that some of the traditional Hungarian foods are available in the USA, and the local people like them. Especially the lángos.

We also have "foreign food" in Hungary, and I like them too. For example gyros and shawarma. These two are almost the same, but the shawarma is more spicy. At least this is what I currently think about it. I ate shawarma only a few times so far (it is new for me), but I ate gyros many times.

I really like shawarma! It is a little spicier, but, I love spicy! I also like gyros! I enjoy many traditional foods from different countries. The flavors are different from here and I find it interesting the way others blend flavors/foods.

I hope you are having a great day!

Me too. I put Erős Pista (spicy paprika) into many foods. Mostly into soups.

I had. Thank you. Today I walked in Szolnok, Hungary, and the Christmas lights/decorations are beautiful in the city center.

I hope that you also have/had a great day.

(Edited)

I love cookies and would love to be able to buy from this store! I'd search all the jars... I'm glad you did it for us, thank you. Charleston seems like a quiet town. In the interior shot, looking through the window, there is the street, sidewalk, passers-by, and cars. It reminds me of many American movies, where a quarter of the time we see a pleasant, calm, warm atmosphere... Unfortunately, in many of these films, suddenly, something awful happens and is in total antithesis to the beginning. Stories, of course, but not at Christmas...

People are nice, but I find that generally, people ARE nice.

Do you mean Charlestonians or people in general?
Unfortunately for me, I can't see them all being nice. You can, your perception is greatly influenced by the approach of Christmas when all people should be nice. It's nice to be able to see the world in holiday colors and have that quiet and acceptance and desire to be that way.

I have to say that reading your Christmas stories makes me feel better too and hope that it will be better, I walk on your hand, to use an expression that I don't know has the same meaning in English.

Thank you, Denise, for making us better!

P.S. In the meantime I managed to finish posting, Sometimes beauty gathers in small places

Somehow, I thought it would be Magda that loved cookies. :) Of course, I am kidding. Who doesn't love cookies? I love their size! Tiny enough to indulge without it hurting the waistline and good enough to eat a bagful. Charleston can be a quiet place although it was an early morning for a lot of the shots, or I avoided people in the shots. Most people walk around if they see people taking pictures.

There are many things to do in town, including museums, they have many markets which are interesting, but, the City Market is basically a historic market complex in downtown Charleston, South Carolina. From the 1790s, the market is about four city blocks. That is always enough to keep most people busy, but, I really like just strolling and taking in the history.

Outside of the hustle of the bigger cities, where it is business as usual, most places seem generally kind and even happy. I choose to see the best because a world without love or at least peace of heart is not a place that I want my kids or someday my grandchildren to grow up in. I hope in choosing to see the best, it may encourage some to show off their best. I like the expression "walk on your hand" and I can guess what it means, but, I have been caught guessing wrong sometime. :) Tell me, so I can put that one in my brain.

I love foreign expressions. I learned many growing up with my Italian Godparents. Se io perdo le staffe, tu perdi la testa. My Godfather, Rocco, would use that with his sons sometimes. It means "to lose the stirrups" (when a person loses their temper) There are so many more, but, they are interesting!

I am running behind again, but, I promise to get better! Thank you so much, Dan! @bluemoon I hope you are having a great day! Thank you for being part of #MarketFriday!

Have a joyful weekend!

Magda prefers more profiteroles and ice cream, I like to munch on cookies.
This town looks like you, that's my impression. Tell me please, do you have a house in Charleston or are you planning to move there, here I don't quite understand.

"Walk on your hand" means "I trust you" or "I do something like you do", the general meaning is trust.

Your Godfather, Rocco, ... makes me think of Marlon Brando!

I know you have a lot of catching up to do and that you're behind, there's a lot on your plate right now. Take my advice for once... comment and answer more concisely, I think you can with just two or three sentences. You'll see how much time you'll save! I know you won't, but I don't know how else I can help you.

Wishing you many joys and pleasant things that make life easier. Have a nice weekend, Denise!

Oh, the cream puff with ice cream! I am used to seeing them with the pastry cream, and both are sinful. :)

I do not have a house in Charleston, Surprised? I was out of the country and came back via Charleston. I lived in South Carolina for a little over a year when I was younger, I went to the University there for a few classes.

I like that saying! "Walk on your hand" and you just made my day! :) Thank you. I am going to get a little more concise this week. I must. I am so behind, but, I am sure people are already disappointed in me for not being able to answer their posts the last few weeks. I did say it was on vacation as I knew I would be able to do it. I guess I will see how it rolls out.

Thanks always, Dan! @bluemoon

Well, what to say? People get upset, some people don't care and everyone forgets and moves on. I tell you from my own experience..., I've gotten angry many times, but that doesn't change anything, I've learned that, so let's just let things be. Let it be, huh?

I hope you had time for a little relaxation too! I'm so shallow that I can't remember the time difference between our places, so I don't know if you still have Sunday now or if it's just starting...
Anyway, have a wonderful Sunday!

Beautiful shots! This looks like a really cool place. We have a cookie shop near where I live that I have been trying to get to for a while now, but I just haven't made it over that way. I might have to try this weekend. The guy used to be a commercial airline pilot and when Covid shut most everything down he decided to open a cookie shop. Apparently they are doing quite well and looking at opening another location already.

Wow!n That is amazing! Commercial pilots pay quite well and especially now with the great pay increases.

It is not a life for everyone and a lot of time away from home unless you have a lot of seniorities. Sounds like you may need to make your way over there!

Hi, Jay! @bozz Thanks for visiting #MarketFriday!

Hello! I am back and want to thank you for dropping your link here. I have been catching up, it is always a bit before you can make up all those weeks, but, I will get there!

I hope all is well with you! Thank you for being a part of the challenge!

The cookies sounds really good. It's awesome that they give you samples to try to see which you like before purchasing. Samples are a good marketing strategy - the law of reciprocity ensures that most people will purchase something after having a sample.

The giveaways are awesome and it helps me to choose what I want. It is a great marketing strategy and you are right about the law of reciprocity - not one person left without a proper bag worth.

Thanks so much for stopping by #MarketFriday!

Ohhh @dswigle it's 1am and I'm reading about your cookies and now drooling over the pictures...I LOVE cookies...😢...and it's 1am...and I don't have any....and I have to go to work in the morning....and I LOVE cookies...and I am trying to lose weight (again)....and I LOVE cookies....and now I just want to go out and buy cookies...😱

But it's not all about the cookies (YES IT IS...), it's also about the rich history of Charleston (and the cookies..) and now I am going to go to sleep and probably wake up with my pillow in my mouth...🤣

I know what you mean!!! LOL At that time of night, where do you get those cravings satisfied?

What!?? Of course, it is all about the cookies!!! :) No, it's not, but YES! It is! The rich history is so worth the trip.

OMG! You had me laughing hysterically with the pillow in your mouth. LOL Have I ever told you that you are funny? Well, that is a no-brainer! Thank you for stopping by!!

Well at that time of night one (me) shouldn't try to satisfy those craving because A) one (me) might have already done that one too many times...B) someone (me again..🙄..) would have to buy some elephant sized scales off the net C) If I started, I'd still be awake and trying to satisfy them in the morning too...(hence the elephant scales...)

Anyhooo, let's not go there...again...please...

And yes, the rich history that I have heard about in some of Clive Cusslers adventure novels...which is exactly WHY I WANT/NEED to go and see it all for myself!

Lolsz I know he doesn't- well didn't...and I'm sure his son Dirk Cussler is weaving incredible, but true tales about Virginia into the new stories too! 😃

Wish I had time to read them!

And wish I had time (and the $$$$$) to go there!

What an interesting post! I'm glad to see you are back! Did you have a good trip while being away?

And so South Africa has also made its mark with dr. Garden importing the "Cape Jasmin". That's great!

You need to check out the lemon or key lime in their citrus selection...

That reminds me of the lemon cookies my wife sometimes bakes for us. Oh my, I love them and cannot stop eating them. My wife often has fun by hiding them away from me...lol! But then I get a pleasant surprise the next day when I find that we still have some lemon cookies...😅!

Maybe this shop has steep prices for their cookies to cover expenses for all the free tasting samples they put out. However, reading your post, it seems like you get what you pay for in terms of quality! In that case, I don't mind spending some extra money.

You can find my post for this week here.

It's nice to have you back...and wow, it was really nice to see that "Dankie" at the bottom of your post!

Enjoy your weekend, @dswigle!

Gardenias are such a beautiful part of my landscape. The heavenly perfume is memorable. While some find it too strong, my plantings have them placed in such a way that they waft through the summer air, making my entire yard lovely.

We thank your country for that.

I agree that they need to cover their expenses and this is the best way. People would not want to pay for their samples and would not want to buy something they weren't sure they liked. I don't mind up spending either, especially when done this way. I am glad to be back!!!

Thank you for being such a great part of the challenge~!!

I'm glad your Gardenias are providing you with so much joy! That's awesome.

I am grateful to be part of the challenge and I love to take part every week.

Apologies for the late reply though. My wife's niece arrived here from Johannesburg to visit us for a few days...so there is a lot of catching up taking place...and time is not exactly waiting for anybody...lol.

Enjoy your day, @dswigle!

Happy Market Friday, @dswigle (Denise)!

Your post cheered me up! The cookies look so delicious, and Byrd’s Bakery is so cozy. I would visit it. But this bakery is so far away. It's so good when you can try the cookies before you buy.

I like to bake homemade matcha cookies and oatmeal cookies with nuts and chocolate. I always give homemade cookies to my friends for Christmas.

My entry for the #MarketFriday is here

Thank you! The cookies were delicious and I think they have a smart marketing way of giving away samples. Then I can see what I want! Yes!

My mom always gave homemade cookies and bread to the neighbors and in turn, so do I. Matcha cookies? The green ones? Yummy!!! I love oatmeal cookies, but, do you know I have never had them with chocolate? I must try them. I am a huge oatmeal cookie fan!

Thank you for your continued participation in the challenge!

I love December too! Such a wonderful time of year!

The cookies are pricey, but, I think with endless free samples, there needs to be a way to recoup a bit of the lost money. If you aren't buying a lot of cookies all the time, I could possibly afford a bag or two, but certainly not an everyday thing.

I am so happy the post made you happy! ❤️

Thank you for being part of the challenge!

Good day ma'am, wow your post literally reminder me we're already in the month of December, I happy new month to you.

They've got some wonderful collections of cookies and the interior design of the stores shows how much they're already in the mood of Christmas.

Happy December to you! Time has surely flown by! I love the way the interior design is old-timey, but, better than that, the way he hawks his cookies is really fine! Who doesn't love free samples? I like the fact that you can sample all of the cookies and they don't even blink at you.

I think the cookies are pricey, but, I don't mind buying a few as they are such nice people and the cookies are good!

I hope all is well with you in Ilorin and that you have settled everything for you and the family. It has been a while since I have asked and I hope things are moving forward.

Thank you for being part of the challenge.

When I think of small cookies, I think Famous Amos. A key lime cookie sounds interesting to say the least.

I think of Famous Amos too! They have reimagined the company, sadly. I miss the chocolate chip and pecan little cookies.

The key lime cookies are awesome, as are the lemon ones. Thank you for being part of the challenge and for dropping the link!

Wonderful to see a little bit more of this place.
Indeed we need to live by it. And be grateful… for every little thing in our life😁🥰

Those cookies in the jars… and tasting them. Nom nom… I think I would have to buy some too.

I couldn’t join in today, just too busy the last days and more busy days to come. But all good. I will check in when I can. And post a few less posts. But all good. 🤓😎

Have a wonderful weekend dear Denise 👋🏻😊
Hope you are almost caught up 🤗🤗

Oh, I deleted my response after I posted it. In case you were notified, it was an error! Boo!

A grateful heart. Every single day.

The cookies were delightful and to have free samples like that was wonderful and saved many a person from buying the wrong cookie. I was surprised at the ones that I loved best. 😁 Not the ones I thought. So, for me, it was an extra bonus to pretest the cookies!

No worries about joining. I always say that we need to attend to life first and play later. Well, it is not all play, especially when you are counting your crypto. Hehe!

Don't forget to have a beautiful Sunday!

Yep, got a notification but didn’t go anywhere. No worries. 😉

So we shall have. Every day…

Oh yes… that’s interesting to hear that the ones you liked the most weren’t the ones you thought of first. Than tasting a few does help so much. 😎

To much going in the next days/ few weeks. Will post a bit less overall and engage. But it’s needed.
Important things to arrange. Getting ready… to move soon 😁😎
Hehehe yep, especially counting crypto nowadays. Let’s think long term… as we should 🤩

Thank you so much Denise 😊🤗🌺 you too have a beautiful Sunday 👋🏻☀️🥰

Hiya Denise and happy busy day!

Salted caramel cookies!
Now that is hilarious, I actually mentioned salted caramel in my post and do you say carmel or caramel?

What a gorgeous bakery and I bet there was the most wonderful happy aroma!

Well I did join in this week and did it in the community too!

It is salted caramel, yes? Oh, I love to have them all dressed up in a thin layer of salted caramel and a dusting of flaky sea salt, Most definitely divine! Did you really have a post on it? No way! 🤣

There were people seen gathering around the open door, inhaling the scent. Oh, my! Thanks for using the #MarketFriday platform. You rock!

And, of course, #MarketFriday loves you!

Cookies! Yes I visited too a famous bakery that sells delicious cookies in our hometown the past month when I took a vacation.
I love to eat too, paired with a glass of milk! Oh yeah, like a kid.. it was nice to be one sometimes
I just dropped by in supermarket last night but there is no cookies. But found some bread that was kinda hard to resist!

Here's my entry for this week @dswigle

OH ! A cookie bakery !

I have never heard of or seen one and I adore cookies. All the better that you get to sample them so when you "pay the price", you know you won't be disappointed later. I never mind paying up if the product is special and worth it.

Thanks for sharing this fun adventure.

I cannot believe you have never seen a cookie bakery! I loved going there (I have also been to another one they own in Savannah. That is actually where I was first introduced to them. And yes! They give free samples there too.

You know you are in the right place when you walk up to the door and there are people gathering around the open door, inhaling the scent. 😁

I don't mind paying up either, especially when I know exactly what tastes good to me.

Thanks for stopping by and reading my post!

It is such a Southern thang! :) Salted Caramel and Praline! They were definitely in keeping with the charm of the city. I really do like Charleston and haven't been there since Covid. So, it was nice.

I recognized the bakery as soon as I turned a corner. You know you are in the right place when you walk up to the door and there are people gathering around the open door, inhaling the scent.

Yummy!!!

I know! I couldn't believe how generous they are. There was no limit to their patience either! Great marketing strategy! Everyone bought some.

They did have the Scottish Oatmeal. That is so funny, though. Oatmeal raisin is exactly what I crave when I want a cookie. Warm and wonderful, just like my memory of my mom making them.

Hi @old-guy-photos. Sounds like you are almost moved in! Thanks for making time in your busy schedule to visit #MarketFriday.
