The American stock exchange operator Nasdaq is seeking approval to introduce options on a Bitcoin index.

Matt Hougan, Bitwise's chief investment officer, said it is important to have options for BTC to fully normalize the asset class and that there is currently a missing piece in the liquidity picture that could be provided by exchange-traded funds.

Options are financial instruments that allow traders to buy or sell assets such as stocks, indices and ETFs at a set price on a specific date.
In this way, institutional investors can reduce risks and traders can strengthen their purchasing power, which would further give the young asset class a boost.
The first applications include a request from Nasdaq to trade options on BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF.
