A new Painting and sketch: Great Dane on a Louis Seize Settee

Reginald may have been merely a puppy, but being a Great Dane gave one a wider breadth on the Louis Seize sofa.

I've not done a new piece in my "Animals in Chairs" series in a bit. Having sold a few pieces in it recently, I felt the desire to add a new one.

My Other Great Dane in this Series often sells well, and he is in a mid century Eames chair.

He has more of a pop art Modernist bent so I felt a fun bookend would be a Great Dane in A Louis xvi sofa. Tho, I'm considering doing another version of him with the background being equally as bold in flat color. I'm going to faff about with that today.

I love, after sketching on paper and having a good scan, to have my artwork to fuss about on layers. Having The Dog and the sofa on separate layers allows me to play with colour and forms.

Isolated without the background, later today I'll play about with some variations of the ground and floor.

For the fabric this time, I felt a "modern" look was with watercolor splaters, 2 layers. It felt like a compliment to the other Great Dane in the series.

Having painted him up it's easy enough to have a play with the sofa and background colors and I really like him in Pinks and Greens.

I might adjust the intensity of color, as now he rather blends with the sofa, but I liked it enough to consider this a done version. I'm currently fussing about putting in on things.

The Blue version looks quite good on things, I think. Such as a Pillow.

Or the cool Wood Block prints, which actually are pretty popular.

It was fun to do another 'animal on furniture piece' for as much as I love plants, animals, portraits (and now robots) I am obsessed with chairs and sofas.

In fact, this series began a few years back when I needed to curtail my own need to purchase said furniture in Real life. When I had chairs stored in our eaves waiting for rotation , I knew I'd better start just drawing and painting my passion rather than buying them.

This year's art resolution of "Follow the passion of the day" has greatly been helped by my series' as I can feel less scattered and more focused in that if I think, of a morning, "Gosh, I want to sketch out a Louis Seize sofa today" I can thing, "Ah, yes, that'll fit nicely into the series."

Do you find, in your craft or art, that a sort of loose focus helps your own productivity?

Well, I hope you enjoyed my Great Dane today and that you find a moment in your day to indulge in your own passions; and remember to stay creative!
