Learn about the life of Xo Dang ethnic minority through pictures

Hello Hivers in the Photography Lovers community, as a photography lover, my hobby is going around and taking pictures of everyday life. For me, photography is my way of capturing beautiful images and memories. And today, through the photos below, I would like to introduce to you the life of the Xo Dang ethnic minority in the mountainous Central Highlands of Vietnam.

This photo can tell you a lot about the life of the Xo Dang ethnic minority. This is a photo I took around 5pm. In the picture is a family on a motorbike on their way home from work. It is easy to see that the driver is the husband, behind him his mother, then his wife and children and finally his father. It could be speculated that they were on their way home from a day's work in their fields far from the village. This photo shows the close family affection of the Xo Dang ethnic group. And another thing that can be seen is that there are no traffic laws and traffic police in this area.

Rice cultivation and buffalo rearing are the main sources of income for the people here. We can see rice fields and buffaloes everywhere in this land. Because of the mountainous terrain, the villagers have no choice but to cultivate terraced rice fields on the hills. Buffaloes are considered one of their greatest assets. Even each buffalo here has its own name.

6M8A1450.jpg

For easy travel in mountainous and muddy terrain and also to carry more, the motorcycles here are re-engineered to be stronger, bigger and with better grip. Here, villagers don't care about traffic laws and traffic police, and the government understands that they do it for a living.

To transport things and plow the fields, villagers have two options. One is a tractor and the other is a buffalo. That's why they love their buffaloes and give them names.

The villages are located far from the commune center so the children have to walk a long distance to get to school. They may have to wake up early to climb passes or wade streams to get to school. In order to be on time for school, they often get up very early and walk for hours to get to school. They usually bring lunch to be able to stay at school throughout the day. And because the way to school is long, they often go in groups for safety.

Here, children start working from a very young age. This is also one of the reasons many children drop out of school besides the difficult educational conditions. The children can work in the fields, do housework or go foraging in the woods or in the streams. Because of that, the children here look more mature and healthy than the children in the cities.

And compared to children in cities, the joy of Xo Dang children comes from very simple things. Their joy can be riding bicycles on the village roads, playing soccer or simply playing swing games in front of the village communal houses. The children of Xo Dang do not seem to have an attitude of complaining about the lack of life, but they enjoy and are happy with what they have. This is also something that we should learn from them.

These ladies have a good morning with beers.

These kids had fun playing soccer with a volleyball.
In general, after a period of contact with the Xo Dang ethnic minorities, I have a feeling that despite the difficulties and deprivations in life, the Xo Dang people lead a very simple and happy life. That makes me wonder if material things are the determining factor in human happiness? What do you think?

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my post. I hope that through these photos, you will understand more about the life of the Xo Dang ethnic minority. And have a nice day.

Their lives their rules. Our countryside here mostly have no traffic rules and it is okay, people live peacefully and harmoniously with each other. Hopefully, their children there will strive to get good education despite their conditions of living. I like the way these people bond each other. Happiness is a choice for sure and no material things can buy that choice, I may say it in my point of view. Have a nice evening!

Hi @diding
Thank you very much for your stopping by and sharing your opinion.
I'm still not sure about it. Sometimes I'm happy without material things, but sometimes I need them.

I got that and it's good to have material things too. However, some people cannot afford what others can, and they are okay and happy as well. My pleasure!

Yes each person has different life conditions, I know that we should be happy and satisfied with what we have, but it's hard to do it.

Lots of my childhood memories. We had to walk a long distance to get to school and on rainy days we had to bring extra clothes incase it's impossible to cross the river( no bridge and the current is strong) then we had to stay in the school. Do they also fetch water from the spring? Fetching water is one of our tedious routine because we had to fill the big clay jar. I can relate to this.😀 I love this simple living.

Hi @franzpaulie
I don't know that you have a lot in common with the local people here in Vietnam. They can get water from the school and the water over is filterer from the water in the spring running down from the mountain.

From the Pictures shown in this post I can easily say that life for Xo Dang ethnic and his family is not easy at all, A whole family was sitting on 1 motor cycle, It difficult but what other options they have ? People living in their area will be having the same problems.

Hi @itwithsm
You're right, they don't have many options. They just follow the flow and don't really have rules like us. But they have a happy life.

No work is easy, but the way you see in these pictures that they work all day in the fields, sing something and then sell it in the market is their way of life. Without hard work, man cannot achieve anything in this world, every man has to do his work. Someday he will become a successful person.

Hi @djbravo
I totally agree with you. Man cannot achieve nothing without hard working. And when I saw the local people, I think that they even work harder than us.
