The Enchanting Nights of the City
It’s that time of year again—Christmas season! Every year during this period, Christmas trees pop up everywhere, attracting crowds who come to admire and take photos. Each tree has its own creative story behind it. For example, the Christmas tree in front of Shin Kong Mitsukoshi in Xinyi District is themed around Icelandic Christmas elves.
According to Icelandic folklore, Santa Claus isn’t just one person but 13 elves who bring surprise gifts and warm blessings to children on Christmas Eve. At the base of this tree, you’ll find these 13 elves on display.
Normally, it’s a 20-meter cream-colored Christmas tree. But on the hour, the 13 elves begin to spin, making the tree look like it’s moving. At the same time, fine snow falls from above, and colorful lights shine on the tree, transforming it into a dazzling sight. Every time the light show starts, people gather to watch this magical display, soaking in the romantic atmosphere of a Nordic winter wonderland. That’s what makes Xinyi District so charming.
The sky bridges connecting the malls in the area are also decorated with millions of tiny lights. Walking across these bridges at night feels like stepping into a dream, surrounded by a sea of sparkling lights. Whether you’re strolling or snapping photos, it’s a one-of-a-kind experience that exudes a romantic vibe different from the everyday scene. Each mall also features unique Christmas-themed art installations, all linked by the beautifully decorated bridges.
And, of course, the Christmas markets on weekends are always bustling with visitors. Vendors offer limited-time holiday treats, like hot mulled wine, which is perfect for warming up on colder days. Pair that with some German-style pan-fried sausages, and you’re not just warm but also satisfied! It seems like every year, these markets carry a festive Christmas vibe with international goods. It’s as if selling these kinds of items is what makes a Christmas market feel truly authentic.
