If I were to recommend a bubble tea, I'd go for the classic pearl milk tea. The blend of milk and tea is perfect—rich but not too sweet. The pearls are soft and chewy, adding that final touch that makes the drink more than just a cold beverage. However, pearl milk tea is getting more expensive, and some people argue that these flavored drinks aren’t the healthiest option. As an alternative, you could try black tea. A lot of people wonder what the difference is between "red tea with ice" and "iced red tea" since some shops list it as one while others use the other name. Some say the former has crushed ice while the latter only has ice cubes, but personally, I don't think there's much difference.

My friend from Taichung recommended Ayue Red Tea Ice, an old-school red tea that originated from Yizhong Night Market. It’s so popular that there are several branches just within the night market itself. It’s common to see people walking around the market with a cup of Ayue Red Tea Ice in hand. I decided to join in and bought a cup to try it out. The taste is basically like iced red tea, but sipping on it while wandering through the night market was a unique and enjoyable experience.

Yizhong Night Market is known for its large student crowd, thanks to the nearby schools like National Taichung University of Science and Technology, Taichung First Senior High School, and National Taiwan University of Physical Education and Sport. After school, students often hang around the shopping area and night market, having fun with friends or grabbing a snack before heading home. As a result, you’ll see the latest trends everywhere here.

In the small alleys, you’ll find all sorts of little shops selling items popular with young people. The fashion, accessories, and shoe stores are also quite trendy and reasonably priced, which is why students love spending time here. Plus, there are plenty of cheap and delicious snacks that cater to their tastes. My friend told me about a place selling Fuzhou buns that he’s been eating since he was a kid—five for just 20 NTD! Pair those with a red tea ice, and you’ve got a perfect afternoon snack. Unfortunately, even after finishing my red tea ice, I couldn’t find the shop. I guess it just wasn’t meant to be.

Finally, I decided to cool off at the biggest food court in Yizhong Night Market. The entrance has info and pictures of all the food spots inside. Personally, I prefer street food over chain restaurants, but in addition to the eateries, there are also some trendy shops and a kids' play area in there. However, most people seem to stick to the first and second floors for the food, leaving the upper levels pretty much empty—a shame to waste such a nice space. Still, having a place like this right next to the night market is actually pretty convenient.
