Exploring Portable Audio Fear

These past few years, I’ve often noticed a lot of young people wearing wireless Bluetooth earbuds while out on the streets or riding the metro. It seems like smartphones and Bluetooth earbuds have become their essential daily gear. They use them to listen to music, podcasts, take calls, or even while exercising. Whether they’re walking down the street or commuting, they’re completely immersed in their own little world. I’ve even heard friends complain that some young people wear earbuds while eating, which they find super baffling.
So, while I can’t fully wrap my head around it, I recently found out that there’s an event entirely dedicated to headphone brands, and it’s already in its fifth year! Honestly, this was the first time I’d heard about something like this. If it were a sound system or speaker exhibition, I’d get it since I have friends who are into that kind of stuff. But a headphone-only event? That was new to me. It’s just wild how fast the world is changing!
When I entered the venue, there were way more people than I expected. Sure enough, the place was packed with young folks trying out headphones at the booths, testing the sound quality. After a while, I managed to find a free spot and tried out a few pairs myself. To be honest, I couldn’t really tell much difference between them. That said, the prices were insane—ranging from a few thousand to tens of thousands of NT dollars! To keep things fun and appealing for the younger crowd, the event even had activities like mystery box giveaways and dart-throwing games. I stood by the darts stage for a bit, watching contestants put in so much effort to hit the big prize. It was surprisingly entertaining.
When I was a kid, my mom would always warn me not to listen to music with headphones too much. She’d say that listening at high volumes for long periods could cause irreversible, permanent hearing damage. But back then, I loved blasting my music as loud as it would go. I wanted to feel the rhythm and the power of that bass. Looking back now, I realize that moderation is key—too much of anything isn’t good.
