Checking Out the Van Gogh x Pokémon Art Exhibit
One day, while passing by a department store in the Xinyi district, I noticed a sign advertising a limited-time Van Gogh x Pokémon art exhibit with free admission. I was busy at the time, so I decided to come back another day when I had more time. A few days later, I passed by again, and since I had more time, I figured I’d check it out and enjoy some air conditioning. There had been news recently about how the air conditioning in the food court of this mall wasn’t cool enough, with customers sweating while eating. After complaints flooded in, it even made the news, which was a bit of negative publicity for the mall. But today, the air conditioning was perfect, which makes all the difference for a pleasant shopping experience!
Van Gogh is a world-renowned artist, a pioneer of post-impressionism whose unique style has left a lasting impact on the art world. Recently, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Van Gogh Museum in the Netherlands, the museum collaborated with the wildly popular "Pokémon" franchise, releasing a series of joint artwork and related activities. Now, we finally get to see some of these Pokémon-inspired versions of Van Gogh’s iconic paintings in person.
There weren’t many pieces on display, but the famous Pikachu version of Van Gogh's "Self-Portrait with Grey Felt Hat" was there, though it was just a small piece. Other works included an Eevee version of "Self-Portrait with Straw Hat", a Sunflora version of "Sunflowers", and a Snorlax version of "The Bedroom in Arles". I imagine die-hard Pokémon fans would be thrilled to see these! For me, art is something for experts to truly appreciate while the rest of us just enjoy the spectacle. I definitely fall into the latter category. Art is expensive, but just having the chance to see these up close was satisfying enough for me—I’m not about to dive into the world of collecting anytime soon, my wallet couldn’t handle it!
Aside from me, there were quite a few young people also admiring the pieces. I think the Van Gogh and Pokémon collaboration has bridged the gap between Van Gogh and younger generations, especially since most young people know Pokémon much better than Van Gogh. As for me, I only know of Van Gogh because I had to memorize his name for history exams; otherwise, I might not have known who he was either! This kind of crossover exhibit adds a touch of artistic flair to the Pokémon brand while achieving a shared value for both brands.
