The Most Beautiful Bookstore in the World - Ateneo Grand Splendid, Buenos Aires [ENG/ESP] (43 Pics)

DSC_0794.jpg

A dream bookstore, a visually captivating place and a magnet for lovers of reading and books? Today I want to share with you an article about the most beautiful bookstore in Buenos Aires, in Argentina or in the world? Well, I chose this title not because of my appreciation of the beauty of this historic bookstore, but because it has been declared so. The Guardian, the British newspaper declared it as the second most beautiful bookstore in the world in 2008 and 11 years later, no less than National Geographic declared it as the first most beautiful bookstore in the world, and rightly so!

It's one of my favorite places in the city and that I had not visited in a while, I think I have dedicated an article to this place but punctually related to architecture, today I will unload many aspects in a more general way that can be or in fact are very important and relevant.

About History.

Building, Theater, Cinema and Radio.
(Edificio, Teatro, Cine y Radio)

DSC_0781_1.jpg

We have more than 100 years of history in relation to this building, inaugurated in 1919 where previously was the National North Theater. The architects in charge of the eclectic design were Torres Armengol and Peró and the architects in charge of its construction were Falcope and Pizoney, they named the theater as Grand Splendid and it had a capacity of up to 500 people at the time, more than 2,000mts² and four floors.

As for the radio station, it had a very short life inside the building, four years after its inauguration in 1923 it started the Grand Splendid Theatre, one year later it changed its name to Radio Grand Splendid and 6 years later in 1930, the radio station left the building to move to another place in the city.

As for the theater and cinema, many famous artists, national and international, passed through there, an example of fact was Carlos Gardel, who in addition to having had performances there, at the time of the radio broadcast his songs, besides this somewhere in the building there was a recording studio where this artist recorded his songs. This place is not open to everyone and can not be visited, why? I do not know 😃

A small space, a building that houses too much history and culture, when you enter there is some kind of vibe, unique and nice atmosphere that makes you not want to leave, you walk through the corridors and admire every interior detail of this building, you enter the history and if you know some history about the building you can recreate possible scenarios a century ago. Mind blowing!

Alucinante!

About Bookstore.

(Sobre la Librería)

DSC_0728.jpg

The inauguration of the bookstore was in the year 2000 in December, the Ateneo bookstore, a national chain with more than 50 branches and very well known, was the one who took the building to turn it into the main headquarters. The interesting thing about all this is that they wanted to keep the aesthetics of the place, the theatrical or cinema atmosphere, the corridors were left exactly the same, the details of the building, its dome and even the stage with the curtain. I think this is what made it become the most beautiful bookstore in the world at the time.

In the basement of the building they created a sector where you can find children's literature and a sector dedicated to the sale of vinyl. So it is beautiful from any angle you look at it.

We went and tried to walk through the building and its corridors from top to bottom.

There are some areas of the building, more exclusive sectors that I suppose were dedicated to important people of that time so that they could appreciate the shows in a private way, they are small balconies with little capacity of people. Those areas are now reading rooms. Yes, it is a bookstore where you can buy and get any number of books and authors but you can also go there, sit in that exclusive area and read.

The Cafeteria.

DSC_0755_1.jpg

On the stage, they decided to open a coffee shop of the important Havanna coffee chain, an impressive idea and that I have not yet been able to experience and enjoy, someday I have to go back and taste a good coffee with the impressive view of the whole building, its dome, floors and details of decoration and architecture.

I think it is a wonderful idea to be there, I could even spend a whole day in this building. This cafe has a piano, so while you enjoy a good coffee or dessert you also enjoy good music, which also accompanies the reading. So you can choose, sit in a wooden chair, a comfortable armchair and I just remembered the name of these exclusive reading areas, former boxes .... And you will be accompanied by music.
