Memories

I have a lot of memories centered around my childhood. They can not all be good that is a fact. Some of them were so bad I rather not remember while some are ones I sit back in my free time and reminisce about.

Not all, but most of us had that single person we thought we would marry when we grow up. The cute term is our first love. I don't know if I "loved" him. But again I guess I did if I married him at the age of five.
I've always loved the indoors, even up to this point in my life, give me money, food, water, electricity and books to read and I will never leave my house.
It was the same back then. I enjoyed staying inside. I heard a new family moved into the house at the back and I thought oh well. My brother, the social sibling already made friends with the neighbor's children, Laughter and David that's what I heard they were called.

Laughter was a little bit older than my brother and David was about my age. Over time the play moved from outside the compound to inside our house. I had no choice but to join in. We became really good friends.
David and I, a little more. Our parents did that stuff where they indirectly shipped us. I knew I was going to marry him and eventually I did.

One day, he bought a sweet, the kind that had a rubber ring attached to it. When he was done licking the sweet, he handed me the ring and asked me to marry him. It wasn't the most romantic proposal but at that point it meant everything so of course I said yes.

Life was going great, I was somewhat married even though my "husband" moved away. We still spoke through our mothers phones.
"You are a big girl now", my mother told me. I was only eight. I didn't know what she was talking about.
What she meant was it was time for the new torment to begin, I had to help her in the kitchen and learn how to cook. So I spent most of my time after school helping her bake and cook.

On a warm and sunny afternoon, I heard my mother's voice in my head and I thought, "Yes she is right I am a big girl". So I went to the kitchen, got some potatoes out, peeled them, cut them into tiny pieces. Poured the oil into the pan. I succeeded in frying the whole chips.

But I should have waited for my mum to come help me because what happened in the next few minutes is one of those memories I would rather not recall.
The incident put me out of school for four months. In those months I lived the dream, everything was done for me. I didn't have to leave my house. The perfect life right?, those were just the perks.
Unfortunately that life came with extreme pain. But I lived through it and now I have a really big scar to brag about and say "I survived".

Everything was right with life after that. I walked around and in fact I started leaving my house without being forced to. There was this place my brother and I loved going to play. Whenever we wanted to go there we would behave like normal children, the next day we would ask the question,"Mum can we go to them Aisha's house?".
Their house was on a different street from ours. I noticed everytime I passed a building on that street kept rising until eventually it became the most beautiful house around the area. Even more exciting, I heard the Governor of the state I resided was moving into it.
I was going to meet an actual governor.

One morning I woke up. My parents told us to brush our teeth, rinse our faces and come outside. When I got there, alot of people had already come out.
The 'big men' as I called them of the area were seated already. I went to join my friends. Because yes at that point I had made a whole lot.
The purpose of the get together was to discuss some issues we were having in the community like light, unavailability of water, the bad road and so on.
I didn't get it. Why was I here when I could be sleeping peacefully? That was when he showed up with his extremely 'Big man Agbada'.
You could feel us buzzing on our sits. After taking so long the meeting finally ended and we the children all ran to meet the governor.
I hugged him. In my head I was going "I'm hugging a governor". All good things must come to an end, eventually he left.

I had an amazing childhood, the little and big things I experienced contributed to the parts that are pieced together to make me.
And now, the moment we've all been waiting for. My lie...
Well I never met the governor. He did build a house not far from mine but I moved away to a new state before he moved in.

So that's my story.. I hope you enjoyed it.

Your story was sweet and interesting to read. If you didn't say, a reader might have guessed the lie to have been that of marrying at 5 years old... those rings were overly popular in popcorn in many countries.
Thank you for sharing your story with us. We appreciate your involvement in our creative non-fiction prompt and we invite you to check our other prompt ideas out.
Have a lovely day:)
